Caroline Wolfe Summer Recital with Leah Jorgensen ~The recital is held at Zion Lutheran Church, 2215 Brandywine Lane,York, PA 17404 on Saturday, August 31 at 7pm
Summer is not officially over until you attend my annual summer recital in tandem with Leah Jorgensen!  This year's recital, called A Light in the Darkness , features music for French horn (Leah Jorgensen), euphonium (Jordan Moore), ocarina (also Jordan), piano (Randy Yoder), and voice (me).  There will be solo music, duets, and trios performed a capella and in collaboration with piano.
As you may know, York County has lost many fine musicians in the past year. Mike Baldwin (piano/organ) passed away last July, followed by Randal Woodfield (baritone) in November and Justine Boyle (oboe/saxophone) this March. To honor these individuals, a portion of the program is dedicated to them and will be performed in their memory. Please consider attending to celebrate these lives.
We hope to see you there! ~ Caroline Wolfe
SUMMER MUSIC AT YORK FIRST

The choir had the month of February off this 2018-2019 season. To make up that time we sang through the first 3 Sundays in July. It was a welcome change for our summer season due to the fact that the choir was not absent for so much of the summer. Soloists for the remainder of the summer are practicing their music to inspire you through the end of the summer season.

Sept 1 - Dan Snook, our choir member and wonderful storyteller will be blessing us with some music from the piano. I am excited to hear him play the offertory.
Also, our baritone Chancel Choir soloist Barry Hollinger will be singing for us.

Sept 8 - Our 2019-2020 choir season begins.

LADIES BIBLE STUDY - Starting Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2019 at 9:30 am in the Church Lounge.   Our study this year will be “The GOSPEL-CENTERED LIFE”. Lots of Christians talk about the gospel but how many really understand the gospel and know how to apply it to their lives? We will focus on nine self-contained lessons with discussion questions, articles, practical exercises, “The Gospel-Centered” Life helps participants understand how the gospel shapes every aspect of life.
This year, the class teaching and leading will be a bit diversified with three different leaders rather than one. Your leaders will be Dolly Furst, Mary Esther Anderson and Judy Yingling, who will alternate weeks of teaching and discussion. We are hoping you will enjoy the different teaching styles that should benefit each of you in drawing closer to Jesus.
We welcome all ladies of all ages, so if you think you would be interested in joining us, please let Dolly Furst know by Sunday, Sept 1 , so a book can be ordered for you.  You may call (717) 244-8218 or Email her at furstdol@aol.com or see her at church.  The cost of the book will be $12. Payment is not due until the first class on Sept 17.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT AND REQUEST FOR TEACHERS:
Beginning in September, we will be starting a second Sunday School class for our children. This means that we are in need of additional teachers and helpers.  Our plan is to have a class for PreK-1st Grade and a class for 2nd-6th Grade . Ideally we would like teachers to serve several weeks in a row to allow for continuity and to provide the best for our children. Helpers can be that extra set of hands and eyes and could be part of a more rotational schedule.  If you would like to teach or be a helper, please contact Michele Gibbel or Diane Gibble. Thank you!

"Notes from the Console," Article 6, By Mike Frock

This week's Prelude is the tenth of eleven variations Bach composed based on a hymn titled "Be Thou Welcome, Gentle Jesus."  I wanted to give you some insight into his compositional process since the form in this week's piece is so well delineated. When Bach writes a fugue, variation, or fantasia based on a hymn, the melody line of the hymn becomes what is called the cantus firmus (cf) in his piece. Depending on the piece, the cf can be embellished, but as a rule, it is not changed. In last week's Prelude, he took the cf and made it the bass line in the piece (played on the pedals). Everything else played on either manual was original material composed by Bach to create new harmonies above the cf. This week's piece is the opposite in that each note of the cf is a prolonged note in the highest voice, and everything below these notes is original material. Each note of the cf gets it's own measure (the piece is in a slow 3/4 so each cf note is a dotted half note and has six slow moving eighth notes underneath). Even more revealing than the length of the cf notes is that the cf will be played by itself on the Swell manual using an Oboe stop, which is a distinctive reed stop which cuts through everything else. All of the original material will be played using a blend of softer principal, flute, and string stops on the Great manual and the Pedals.
The form of the piece alternates in about eight-measure phrases (sometimes seven- or nine-measure phrases) where the first phrase is entirely original material all played on the softer stops, then the next phrase is the cf played on Oboe and the other material played on the softer stops. This pattern continues until the cf has come in 6 times, and finishes with another phrase of original material. In this manner, the 51-note cf comprises 51 of the 105 measures of the piece. The fifth and sixth times the cf appears, it is in harmony, so two notes at a time are played with the Oboe sound. Some of the dotted half note cf notes are embellished with a trill, but they are always the full measure (three beats). Given that we are not familiar with this hymn, it would be very difficult for anyone listening today to hear the melody of the hymn with it being broken into sections and with one verse of the hymn being prolonged over the entire duration of the variation, about eight minutes. Given the fact that Bach wrote eleven variations on this hymn, it is a fair assumption that this used to be a popular hymn, and it was probably a lot easier for listeners of the day to follow the cf. However, now that you have an understanding of the form and registration of the piece, you should at least be able to distinguish what is cf and what is not, and have an understanding as to why that annoying nasally Oboe is playing all of those really long notes.
