Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Conduct your affairs with humility.
  • Today's first reading gives us the wisdom of Ben Sira, a second-century Jerusalem sage.
  • Because of the upper-class situation of the sage and his students, today’s lesson on humility is dramatic.
  • The final verses introduce a favorite subject of Ben Sira, the giving of alms.

Reading II :  Hebrews 12:18-19, 22-24a

You have drawn near to the city of the living God.
  • In today's reading from Hebrews the image of the Israelites at Mount Sinai is colored with details from the book of Exodus and other Old Testament passages.
  • The gloomy and fearful aspects of the old covenant experience are emphasized in contrast to the picture of Mount Zion.
  • Christians do not have to live in fear of imitating the failures of certain figures in the history of salvation, for they have the advantage of the person of Jesus, who sealed the new covenant in his own blood.

Gospel :  Luke 14:1, 7-14

Whoever exalts self shall be humbled and whoever humbles self will be exalted.
  • In today's Gospel, Luke presents a scene with Jesus in the home of a Pharisee.
  • Jesus addresses the guests in the house with a parable that warns against self-exaltation. This lesson comes soon after the disciples were reprimanded by Jesus for vying for position.
  • Jesus' words to the host point out that the kingdom is for everyone, and our hospitality is to embrace all, especially those who are overlooked.

Please consider reading the upcoming Sunday readings together as a family. These conversation starters will help to prepare your children for weekly mass.
We hope to see you tonight at our annual fall parent night and orientation.
Please plan on gathering at 6:30 PM in the church hall.

Dear SJE Families;

The first week of school is such a busy one! Our students (and teachers) experience a range of emotions from giddy excitement right through to exhaustion – sometimes all in the same day!

This year, we are blessed to welcome a significant number of new students to our school. They will all experience a period of adjustment to our routines and expectations. Although changing schools is a challenge, there are also many life lessons to be learned. We welcome the opportunity to guide our students through this time.

Over the next few weeks, our teachers will get to know their new classes. If you have any concerns about your child’s experience at school, please feel free to reach out to their homeroom teacher. It is our goal to support the learning of our students socially, emotionally and spiritually.  Our relationship with the families of our students is vitally important in this process.

Go Forth and be a Blessing!

Mary Laidlaw Otto

  Welcome!

We have several new faces in our building this fall. We welcome the following people to our community:

Mrs. Melinda Prideaux, Grade 1
Melinda comes to us from St. Alphonsus, where she taught first grade last year. Melinda has a master’s degree in education, and her passion is literacy. What a great fit for our first graders! Melinda’s children attend SJE – Max (Gr. 5), Michaela (Gr. 4), and Josiah (K5).

Mrs. Mary Carlton, Learning Resource
Mary is excited to help our students work individually or in small groups. Mary has a master’s degree in Reading and Language Arts. She is with us 50% of the week. When she is not at SJE, Mary is tutoring children at Cardinal Stritch University.

Mrs. Andrea Leshok, After School Care Coordinator
Andrea joined our After School Care program last spring. After Miss Rocky made the difficult decision to retire over the summer, Andrea agreed to take on the role of directing the program. Andrea’s daughter, Anastasia, is in K5 at SJE, and has a younger brother and sister still at home.

Miss Paige Lobenhofer, After School Care Assistant
Paige joins our afterschool care program with Andrea. Paige is excited to be working with children and is the older sister of Sophia (Gr. 6) and Caleb (Gr.3).

Family Handbook
Today’s paper envelope contains the sign off sheet for our family handbook. Please review the handbook carefully, and sign and return the receipt to the school office as soon as possible. This year’s handbook contains updates to our grading policy for students in grades one through eight. The handbook can be found on our website here:  Handbook
Car Line Family ID tags

Enclosed in today’s family folder you will find a yellow car line ID tag. Families are asked to attach this tag with rubber bands to the passenger side visor of their car. The tag should be visible from outside the car when the visor is flipped down. Please place the ID tags in any cars that will be coming to pick your child up from school. If you need extra tags, just email our school secretary, Mary Jo Kaminski, at  mkaminski@sje.k12.wi.us . She will create and send them home with your student.

Thank you for helping our car line to run smoothly.
