2,700+ New Energy Saving Bulbs
To Light Up City Parking Garages
|
|
In 2017 White Plains was designated a Clean Energy Community by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) in recognition of its leadership in reducing energy use, cutting costs, and driving clean energy locally.
The designation gave the City an opportunity to apply for up to $250,000 to be used for additional clean energy projects, with no local cost share. The City has received approval to use that funding for a project to retrofit the lighting in four city-owned garages to energy efficient LEDs. The affected garages will be the Chester-Maple, Hamilton-Main, Library, and TransCenter Garages.
Over 2,700 light fixtures will be changed from 175 watt high intensity discharge bulbs to 35 watt LEDs. This change is expected to result in a significant reduction in energy use as well as cost savings to the City, as the vast majority of the lights in these facilities are on 24/7. This project comes on the heels of a project that replaced all of the streetlights in the city with LEDs a couple of years ago.

Separated Bike Lane Coming to Martine Avenue
|
|
The City will be installing a two-way separated bike lane in the Fall of 2019 on the south side of Martine Avenue.
The physically separated lane will run between Court Street and South Lexington Avenue for approximately 1300 feet and will extend, with a marked one-way bike lane, to Bank Street. This new facility will provide critical east/west connections to the existing north/south bike lanes on South Lexington Avenue, Martin Luther King Boulevard and Court Street. Green “boxes” will be installed at key locations to facilitate these connections in a safe manner.
Major funding for the separated bike lane was secured from the Federal Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP). The total project also includes enhanced downtown bike racks and a secure bike “corral” at the train station parking area. Pedestrian improvements, including a new mid-block “Hawk” signal on Main Street, are also components of the TAP project.
Check out the City Bike Lane Map here.
