New Study Shows How Autism Can be Measured Through a Non-Verbal Marker
[Source: Science Daily]

A Dartmouth-led research team has identified a non-verbal, neural marker of autism. This marker shows that individuals with autism are slower to dampen neural activity in response to visual signals in the brain. This first-of-its kind marker was found to be independent of intelligence and offers an objective way to potentially diagnose autism in the future. The results are published in Current Biology.

Mindfulness for Middle School Students
[Source: Science Daily]

Two new studies from MIT suggest that mindfulness - the practice of focusing one's awareness on the present moment - can enhance academic performance and mental health in middle-schoolers.
"By definition, mindfulness is the ability to focus attention on the present moment, as opposed to being distracted by external things or internal thoughts. If you're focused on the teacher in front of you, or the homework in front of you, that should be good for learning," says John Gabrieli, the Grover M. Hermann Professor in Health Sciences and Technology, a professor of brain and cognitive sciences, and a member of MIT's McGovern Institute for Brain Research.

Long Term Benefits to Children of Interventional Teacher Coaching During ECE
[Source:  Medical X Press]

Current research findings are mixed as to whether preschool programs can improve individuals' outcomes in the long term, with some studies pointing to benefits years later and others showing a fadeout of cognitive gains as early as elementary school. A new longitudinal study explored the long-term impacts of a preschool quality improvement program for low-income children on their self-regulation and academic skills in high school.

More States Requiring Insurers To Cover Developmental Disabilities
[Source:  Disability Scoop]

After the widespread success of state insurance mandates for autism treatment, a grassroots effort is underway to do the same for other developmental disabilities.

This summer, Missouri became the third state to pass a law requiring coverage of medically-necessary therapy for all children with developmental disabilities. The effort was spearheaded by Robyn Schelp, president of Missouri Disability Empowerment, whose son has a rare genetic disorder that is treated with speech, physical and occupational therapy.

Study: Blood Test Detects Concussion & Subconcussive Injuries in Kids & Adults
[Source:  Medical X-Press]

n one of the largest studies of its kind, researchers at Orlando Health are making new progress in finding ways to detect a traumatic yet sinister brain injury-and getting closer to preventing further damage.

Subconcussive injuries often show no symptoms or immediate effects, but can cause wear and tear on the brain over time with repeated injuries. The latest study, published in the journal BMJ Paediatrics Open, includes more than 700 emergency room patients-children and adults. The study gets us closer to developing a standard blood test to spot these injuries as early as possible.

School District Using Free College Tuition To Attract Special Educators
[Source:  Disability Scoop]

SAN JOSE, Calif. - If you want to be a special education teacher, the San Jose Unified School District has an offer for you: commit to teaching for at least four years, and the district will pay your teaching credential tuition at San Jose State University.

The program is an effort to stem a nationwide shortage of special education teachers, which a recent report said had become a "five-alarm fire." San Jose Unified's offer may be the first in the nation, according to officials, to offer such comprehensive support. Besides the tuition and some fees, participants will receive mentorship and an Apple laptop to use during the two-year program.

4 September Books for Speech & Language Therapy
[Source; Crazy Speech World]

September has snuck up on me, how about you?  I know most of us are back to work by now, so I thought I would share the books I'm planning to use this month!  My choices are based on what's going on in September:   Labor Day, Talk Like a Pirate Day, beginning of the fall season, and everyone being sick because of back to school germs.

A Color of His Own (Book) Inspired Mosaic Craft
[Source:  No Time for Flash Cards]

This activity is all about doing your own thing, making your chameleon whatever color or combination of colors you want. The benefits of this craft are numerous; the peel and stick foam requires children to peel the backing off which is wonderful fine motor practice, and placing the shapes and fitting them together is just like a puzzle. Children use their spatial skills too. That is why I was so excited when

Wild About Books Wednesday is FINALLY back and just in time for one of my favorite seasons - fall! The beginning of the school year has been so hectic and I'm finally getting a spare moment to resurrect my little blog series. If you're new around here, each Wednesday I'll be sharing a book and discussing ways that you can use it to enhance speech and language! Literacy is one of my greatest passions in life and I love taking a literature-based approach to therapy. I have lots planned, so make sure you stop by each Wednesday!

SLP Corner: Back to School: Self-Advocacy Tips for Students Who Stutter
[Source:  ASHA Leader Blog]

Back to school season fills children with a mixture of excitement and anxiety. They probably feel excitement to reunite with friends, participate in clubs, sports or other extracurricular activities, and continue learning (even if they refuse to admit it!) On the flip side, they might experience nervousness about making new friends, getting accepted socially by peers, and finding out if new teachers will be nice or mean. As children get older, they might also worry about achieving good grades.

OT Corner: Incorporating Balance into Your Child's Before-School Routine
[Source:  North Shore Pediatric Therapy]

Balance, like many things, will only get better with practice and through challenging the balance systems. However, it can be hard to find time after school to work on balance activities when kids already have mountains of homework to keep up with. It can also be difficult to make balance exercises fun and enjoyable for kids.
