Historical Tidbit: Post Cards

Post cards capture a snapshot of some point in history, because of that they are a great way of recording history.

The first post card was sent from Camp Conlie   in France, by Léon Besnardeau. It didn't have any pictures of Camp Conlie, that came later.

In 1873, the first post card in America was created in Springfield, MA. It had a picture of the Interstate Industrial Exposition of Chicago  .
Interstate Industrial Exposition
Images of a copy of the post card are available at the Museum of Fine Arts .

There is a post card of Whitman's Regal Shoe factory from 1910. If you compare the image in the post card with images of the building today, you can see some of the changes made to the building. There is no longer a smoke stack or water tower.

Here is a google map of what the place looks like today: Map of Regal Marketplace today

Second Aerial Spraying for Mosquitoes

  • The Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources announced that due to the continued high risk of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), a second round of aerial spraying for mosquitoes will take place in specific areas of Bristol and Plymouth counties.

  • Aerial spraying is anticipated to begin on Wednesday, August 21, and continue over several evenings between the hours of 8p and 4a. This is to avoid possible interaction with honeybees and fish.

  • Residents are encouraged to visit the DPH website at www.mass.gov for the latest updates on spraying.

  • The pesticide that will be used during the aerial spraying is called Anvil 10+10. This product has proven to be extremely effective in exterminating mosquitoes worldwide for over 20 years.
  • Please be aware that while the count of live mosquitoes lessens after an aerial spraying, our risk stays the same. The virus is still out there in remaining mosquitoes! To avoid mosquitoes altogether, it is suggested to stay inside during their active feeding time: during sunset (around 7:30p.)

Donnie Westhaver Mobility Equipment Fundraiser
Saturday, August 31, 2019 at 7:00p at the Whitman VFW Pavilion. Tickets are $15.00 per person, $25.00 a couple. They will be sold at the door, at Duval's Pharmacy or by contacting Linda Griffin at 781-733-4370 or Sue DaSilva at 617-922-9404.
Attention all generous Whitmanites. You all know who Donnie Westhaver is from his involvement with the town over decades. Donnie started the Whitman Toy Drive eighteen years ago, Whitman Wheels for Disabled Vets and Citizens, and started/organized in 2005 the Whitman VFW Men's Auxiliary to Post 697, which later became the South Shore Veterans Assistance Group. Donnie also is a past Commander of the Whitman Legion Post 22, SAL, past Grand Night of the Whitman K of C. Donnie retired from Superintendent of the Whitman Department of Public Works. On August 31, 2017 Donnie underwent spinal fusion surgery. Due to complications during surgery Donnie, unfortunately, is now a quadriplegic.
A fundraiser has been put together in his honor by myself, Linda Griffin, and Sue DaSilva. We are looking for raffle donations. Please contact Linda or Sue for all raffle donations . We are trying to raise money for MOBILITY EQUIPMENT for Donnie that he desperately needs for everyday life. We need help from all of you!!!

Preparation: the action or process of making something ready

I prepare for each day with a list goals I want to achieve. Inevitably, a monkey wrench; important conversation or spontaneous priority will side track me. I need that list to re-focus and remember what is important to accomplish.

“Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.” ~ Abraham Lincoln

“Your strength doesn't come from winning. It comes from struggles and hardship. Everything that you go through prepares you for the next level.” ~ Germany Kent

“Opportunity does not waste time with those who are unprepared.” ~ Idowu Koyenikan

“I believe luck is preparation meeting opportunity. If you hadn’t been prepared when the opportunity came along, you wouldn’t have been lucky.” ~ Oprah Winfrey
Inching forward, slowly improving my quality of life came from preparation, gaining knowledge and making mindful spending choices. We must prepare for the life we want, even if it's done in baby steps. ~ Jacquie
