Dear GFWC Georgia members,
It is with great pleasure I always send this monthly connect to be able to express my gratitude and thanks for all of the work Georgia members do. After attending SRC in Charleston South Carolina this past weekend, I am proud of being a part of GFWC and GFWC Georgia. We were represented well at SRC with our membership.
Please see our "Georgia Suffragettes Cheerleaders" in our photo below, as well as seeing posts of our cheer on Facebook. The GFWC Georgia Suffragettes Cheerleaders will be performing again at the GFWC International convention in Atlanta as we were one of two cheer squads selected by our region to perform. If you missed being a part in SC, you still have an opportunity in Atlanta! Thanks to Julie Bates for allowing the use of the beautiful yellow banners! They were a hit!
The holiday season approaches when we, as club women, are busy with family, friends, and helping others. Look over your calendar for important dates and events. This week is Children's Advocacy Week. I hope your club did something in your community to recognize the week.

Corporate Social Responsibility: What is it?
I google things at least 20 times a day. Whether it’s a celebrity's age, googling for additional information on news topics, events around town, etc. With the Internet at our fingertips, today’s consumers are also becoming increasingly aware of where their money is going. This means that corporations need to consider their purpose beyond making money and increasing revenue for their shareholders. Therefore, today more companies are investing in CSR (corporate social responsibility) programs.
What is CSR?
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a term used to describe a company’s efforts to improve society in some way. These efforts can range from donating money to nonprofits to implementing environmentally friendly policies in the workplace.
What Is the Purpose of Corporate Social Responsibility?
The purpose of CSR is to give back to the community, take part in philanthropic causes, and provide positive social value. Businesses are increasingly turning to CSR to make a difference and build a positive brand around their company.
What are the benefits of CSR for businesses?
The "Double the Donation site" outlines some of the ways
corporations and/or businesses
benefit from a CSR initiative:
- Improve public image. Companies that demonstrate their commitment to various causes are perceived as more philanthropic than companies whose corporate social responsibility endeavors are nonexistent.
- Increase media coverage. It doesn’t matter how much a company is doing to save the environment if nobody knows about it.
- Boost employee engagement. When companies show that they are dedicated to improving their communities through corporate giving programs, they are more likely to attract and retain valuable, hardworking, and engaged employees.
- Attract and retain investors. When companies donate money to nonprofit organizations and encourage their employees to volunteer their time, they demonstrate to investors that they care about more than just profits.
After reading the above, do you know what this means for GFWC Georgia and our local clubs?
That means corporate entities/businesses are looking for ways to donate, volunteer or sponsor charitable activities, events and/or projects. They are looking for a win/win. They want to align themselves with a cause, project or awareness topic –
we can help them
with that by doing what we do best. We organize the events, they donate/sponsor/volunteer. Together we advertise the event and post on our social media channels – this is marketing for our clubs and for the corporate entity in addition to making a larger impact in the community or raising more funds for a charity.
The CSR platform is definitely something we/GFWC GA can use to our advantage – this CSR trend means that corporate entities or businesses need us/GFWC GA (nonprofits) just as much as we need them. Next time you plan to host a fundraising event or volunteer service project – keep this CSR knowledge in mind and
don't be afraid
to reach out to the businesses around you to see if they want to sponsor or lend their time.
Another idea is to reach out to businesses and let them know that you can bring a service project directly to their place of business - it's as simple as ordering lunch delivery. They choose the charity or you can suggest a few. They pay for the cost of the supplies, and you organize the service project and bring everything to them. The only thing they need to do is provide their employees to help stuff toiletry kits or other projects that may be of interest to them. Advocates for Children Week
October 20-26, 2019
Advocating for Children Is something that every club can participate in during the year. There is a week designated to plan a project, but I believe we should advocate everyday of the year. Here are a few ideas that you might want to plan for your club:
- Fun Socks Brighten the Feet and Days of Pediatric Patients – Bring socks with animals, super heroes, sports theme, etc to the children who are sick at your local hospital or doctor’s office.
- Support to Female Students – Many middle and high school girls can’t afford feminine products. Your club could donate to your local school nurse program these essential products.
- Bullying Awareness Campaign – Share important information about bullying through your club’s social media accounts. Awareness and Education are the Key to Bully Prevention.
- Kindergarten First-Day Pet Project - Collect and donate small (beanie-baby sized) stuffed animals to your local school. Students choose a pet to keep at school until the end of the year. It helps them adjust to Kindergarten.
- Gems for Mom - collect and recycle slightly-used jewelry, packaging each piece for donation to local safe houses. The children can give to their Mother to make her feel special on a special day.
As you can see, there are many projects that can be an Advocates for Children project. Be sure and report your project in Jan 2020.
A HUGE Thank You to Everyone who donated and supported our team, GFWC GA Juniors Rock. We were able to raise $3,177 for St Jude’s Research Hospital. Walking for St Jude’s was such an honor and it will become one of my annual events. Also, a big Thank You to Sheila Ransom, a member of the Monroe Juniors, for walking with me early on a Saturday morning.
