LABOR Day!

A Note From Pastor Linda

Riddle me this:
Some people hate to do it. Some love to do it. Some go to great lengths to avoid doing it. Some do it too much. What am I?

Dear ChURch Family,

For many of us, Labor Day means the end of summer vacation, a guilt-trip for anyone wearing white, and an excuse for department stores to have sales. Labor Day came about because workers felt they were spending too many hours and days on the job- and they were! Just google Labor Day and learn about the history behind the holiday.

Human beings need a rhythm of work AND rest in order to live up to their God-given potential. Just as God gives people important work to do, God also asks people to rest periodically from their labor. Work gives each individual the opportunity to partner with God bringing God's kingdom, while rest lets that person enter into communion with God. We hear about this in Genesis:

On the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation (Genesis 2)

Today, many people think of rest as something they have to do so that they can work. In modern society, rest is often seen as the opposite of productivity, a functional necessity only, devoid of higher meaning or significance. In Genesis 2, God both works and rests. Was God tired? Probably not, although God DID just create EVERYTHING! Consider this; the first thing in all of creation that is made holy (set apart) by God, is not an animal or a person or even an object, rather it is a day, and this day is called SABBATH. Later in Exodus, we are commanded to:
Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy. (Exodus 20)

Throughout Scripture, a deeper significance to Sabbath rest is communicated. Sabbath rest is much more than recuperating from a hectic week. These periods of rest are intended to be restorative and are also opportunities to intentionally take time to consider Christ and our relationship with him and our fellow travelers. We call this time WORSHIP.

See you in WORSHIP on Sunday- our final Summer Sunday in the Great Outdoors with a Community Potluck to follow!

Working and resting, together in faith

Mission Jamaica
Date: February 1-8, 2020

Interested in meeting and serving our Neighbors in Jamaica?
Get involved with Hosanna coming this Winter, 2020. A Mission Jamaica trip combines a service project, with time for reflection and spiritual rest. It allows a person to experience an international mission field that is close to home, yet far enough away to immerse yourself in another culture for a week. Over 30 years of accompanying our Jamaican neighbors, has led to over 35 Evangelical Lutheran Churches in America congregations and several colleges from Minnesota as well as North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Georgia, North Carolina and Illinois in partnership with St. Andrew's in Mahtomedi, MN to get involved to make a difference for this community.

Come and see...get connected with your global neighbors! Mission Jamaica has provided a way for folk to love and serve our neighbors just as Jesus taught. Jesus said, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength. You shall love your neighbor as yourself." Mark 12:30-31

This is an unforgettable opportunity for any age. Registration is open now, space is limited so SIGN UP TODAY! Travel as a family, individual, couple, or small group. This LIVE. LOVE. SERVE opportunity is a perfect way to live into Hosanna's mission! More details will be made available on our website.

Talk to Pastor Jen Collins or Kathleen Damon if you have questions or would like to learn more.
