Longtime educator Kahn honored alongside county teachers of year
|
Kahn was named Folsom Cordova's 2019-20 Teacher of the Year in May. She is a special education teacher with nearly 30 years of experience. As an educator in the Counseling Enhanced Program (CEP), Kahn
helps children of all abilities develop the skills they need to access their education.
During her banquet speech, she was joined on stage by former Principal Carole Vargas, with whom she previously worked at Navigator Elementary, her Facility Assistance Dog, Gigi, and former student D'Angelo Smalley. During his remarks, Smalley expressed his gratitude for Kahn's efforts years ago to help him successfully transition into mainstream classrooms.

Community partners give generously to students and schools
|
Several generous community partners brought new school supplies to our students and schools over the last few days.
Items such as notebooks, pencils, backpacks and more were given, so students could have supplemental supplies. Williamson Elementary students, for example, received buckets of donations from Intel.
Check out Fox40's news coverage of that morning!
Some of the other schools who received donations included, Blanche Sprentz, Theodore Judah, Folsom Lake High School, Walnutwood High School, Mills Middle School, Cordova Villa, White Rock, and Carl Sundahl.
A list of generous community partners is growing, but we'd like to thank, Intel, Costco, UPS Store, TOPS, Friends of Folsom, Dee Diapers, Philips, Dignity Health, River City Christian Church, Kiki's Chicken Place, Core Power Yoga and the City of Rancho Cordova, just to name a few. Visit our Facebook page to see a gallery of happy students and kind community members.

One day left: Share your thoughts on Folsom attendance boundaries
|
The Folsom Cordova Unified School District is working with its community to review and propose changes to attendance boundaries in our Folsom schools.
First, we must give our families multiple opportunities for input - including surveys and public forums - during the process. Any adopted changes would not take effect until the 2020-21 school year.
Boundary changes will help our Folsom schools maintain the level of excellence our families have come to expect by better balancing enrollment capacity at our schools. With two similar-sized, large middle schools feeding into two, different-sized high schools, existing feeder patterns have created overcrowding issues at Vista del Lago High School.
The latest:
The District is seeking feedback on initial drafts of several proposed attendance boundary scenarios. The scenarios we are sharing are just the next step of many more opportunities for public input in this process. Based on your feedback to these scenarios, we will present revised options at upcoming public forums. (
See our timeline here
.)
Here is what we're asking you to review:
- Seven (7) elementary-middle-high school feeder pattern scenarios, with detailed resident enrollment projections.
- Two (2) separate elementary school scenarios that balance enrollment capacity at those specific schools.
Here is how you can learn more and leave your input:
1. Review the detailed scenarios, rationale, potential impacts and enrollment projections at this website. Note: This website is optimized for desktop, laptop, and tablet devices.
How we'll use your feedback:
Feedback collected from our ThoughtExchange will be used to help narrow down proposed changes. Revised maps will be presented in public forums before any formal recommendations are made to the Board of Education later this fall. Board meetings will also provide the public an opportunity for input. (See our
full timeline here

In the News: Superintendent profiled in "Power of Leadership" series
|
Folsom Cordova's superintendent, Dr. Sarah Koligian, was recently profiled in a leadership series published by
School Innovations & Achievement
(SI&A), which sat down to speak with her about her approach to public education.
In the article, the superintendent talks about what it means to have a "growth mindset," why it matters to build relationships with students, staff, and families, and how education must continue to evolve to meet the needs of a diverse population.
Folsom Cordova recently partnered with SI&A on The Achievement Initiative featuring Attention2Attendance (A2A), a system developed to track student attendance and send letters to families in their home language when a child is trending toward becoming chronically absent.

How do I have a say about what is taught in Health Education?
|
At the end of the 2018-2019 school year we provided information on the Health Education Framework that had recently been released by the California Department of Education, which included an outline of the differences between the
California Healthy Youth Act, the Health Framework, and our curriculum
. We also sent out a district-wide survey so we could better learn what questions and concerns our families had, surrounding sexual education.
In an effort to continue a two-way conversation on this subject, we would like to invite you to attend any one of the Health Education Parent Forums taking place at our elementary schools in the upcoming weeks.
At the Parent Forum you will learn about the current 5th grade curriculum
Always Changing and Growing Up
, have an opportunity to see one of the videos,
Always Changing -- Co-ed
, that is shown to fifth graders, and share your feedback with us in a guided activity. This feedback will be used to recommend a curriculum to the Board of Education. If new curriculum is recommended, and upon Board approval, it would take effect in the 2020-21 school year.
Our parents are our partners in education, and we invite you to reach out with any questions. Please also visit our website often for information and updates.

It's more than a meal: It's also more money for your school |
By qualifying for free and reduced meals, you can help direct more money to support your school, even if you aren't sure you'll use the meal program!
These applications can increase the amount of money your school receives to pay for resources that help students: academic coaches, technology, musical instruments, field trips and more! Schools receive more money and resources based on the number of families who qualify for free and reduced meals - regardless of whether they decide to use the program.
Do I qualify?
to see if your household income qualifies your family.
Easy and private:
There's no need to bring us paper applications, and we keep your information private.
Your child will never be identified as a participant.
Another benefit? You and your student may be eligible to receive other services:
Not sure you'll use the meal program? That's OK! You don't have to - but keep your approval letter. It could qualify you for other services, like reduced-cost bus transportation.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Families in the following schools
DO NOT
need to fill out a meal application but, for school funding purposes,
MUST
complete
a different income form. Call your school for more information
