| A Message from your Incoming President Caroline Kenna |
A great big thank you to those who completed our survey. Your responses will help your CWC Board members better serve our membership. Thank you to the leadership team that helped Graham Smith, our new newsletter editor, and I put this first issue together.
As we begin our 97th year as a club, we are changing the way we handle business. The Board of Directors created a five-person executive board that includes: president, two vice-presidents, secretary and treasurer to take care of the day to day running of the club.
At the September 17th meeting, the members will officially vote for this slate of officers:
President: Caroline Kane Kenna
Vice President of Membership: Kerry Hubbard
Vice President of Nominations: Anshu Gupta
Secretary: Tiffany Grantham
Treasurer: Paul Reali.
The Board of Directors also created an advisory board for planning our programs, contests, workshops, critique groups and our newsletter. We are still looking for volunteers to coordinate our Open Mic Nights and workshops, a social media coordinator, a historian and/or the head of a steering committee to begin planning our 100th anniversary celebrations for 2022. Think about how you and your skill set might fit into one of these roles. There are no more long-term commitments. All leadership positions are for one year with the option to serve another. Being a vice president is no longer a prerequisite for the presidency. We encourage those who have entertained the notion of serving the club, to take the plunge.
The 2019-2020 season's theme is Exploring the Mystery of Writing by Genre. Writers from across the literary spectrum will share tips and tricks with us. New this year, is a social half-an-hour before each meeting. Beginning at 6:30 pm, please join us to meet and network with writers of like mind. Business will begin at 7 pm. Member announcements will follow the speaker. If you plan to share your good news, be prepared to describe your project in a minute or less to give others a chance to share their successes.

Guest Speaker: NYT's Best Selling Nonfiction Author
Gavin Edwards

Celebrity journalism has unique pleasures and pitfalls. Gavin Edwards has traveled from Bahrain to New Zealand to spend time with famous personalities including George Lucas, Stephen Colbert, and Snoop Dogg. He will discuss his experiences riding tour buses, drinking champagne, and playing skee-ball with the stars--and explain how those adventures made him a better writer.
Gavin Edwards is the local New York Times-bestselling author of ten books (including The Tao of Bill Murray and The World According to Tom Hanks) and the editor of The Beautiful Book of Exquisite Corpses. Edwards published his first book of misheard lyrics in 1995. Titled 'Scuse Me While I Kiss This Guy, it was published by Touchstone Books and he's written about many celebrities. His most recent book about Fred Rogers comes out in October 2019.

America Bound: An Epic for Our Time

Charlotte Lit is excited to present the first-ever dramatic reading of David Radavich's America Bound: An Epic for Our Time on Wednesday, September 11, at 6:30 p.m. in Studio 2 (Room 208), 1817 Central Avenue in Charlotte.
Radavich's book is set in the eponymous town of Troy, USA and features 24 monologues by a diverse group of everyday Americans from World War II to the war in Iraq. During these three generations, the nation undergoes dramatic changes from the post-World War II boom through the turbulent 1960s, civil rights movements, AIDS crisis, and into the new century. Multiple voices offer intimate, sometimes searing perspectives on American culture over the past sixty years. Admission is free.

| NC Writers' Conference Honors Dannye Romine Powell |
This summer the North Carolina Writers' Conference celebrated
Dannye Romine Powell and what she means to the state's writing community. Powell, a long-standing CWC member, is an extraordinary poet, and an insightful, no-holes-barred-interviewer and book reviewer for The Charlotte Observer.

Debra Wallin and Caroline Kane Kenna had the pleasure of representing CWC and CWC North at the conference that was held in Lexington, NC. They received plaques, NCWC awarded to the the club for "exemplary service and dedication to the writers in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County" and helped David Radavich make the case that the greater Charlotte area is "the third important locus of literary influence" in the state of North Carolina.

Charles Israel, Jr., teaches creative writing at Queens University of Charlotte. His poetry chapbook, Stacking Weather, was published by Amsterdam Press. He's also had poems and stories in Field, The Cortland Review, Crazyhorse, Nimrod International Journal, Zone 3, Pembroke Magazine, Eleven Eleven, Journal of the American Medical Association, Waccamaw Journal, and North Carolina Literary Review. He lives in Charlotte with his wife, Leslie.
Brief Extremes: Writing Flash Fiction
What you will learn: Just like traditional short stories, flash fiction relies on character, plot, and image. In this seminar, we'll talk about how to compress these three elements in useful, surprising, and satisfying ways. We'll discover how to spade up deep images, construct a character, build conflict, and then let all the elements play off and nourish each other. Using a range of prompts, we'll write flash fiction pieces and share them. Besides our own work, we'll look at work by contemporary writers to inspire us. Time permitting, we'll also review the growing number of publication possibilities for flash-fiction.

Did you know...
Dannye Romine Powell was our first newsletter editor.
Ruth Moose originally endowed our Flash Fiction Contest because she wanted to give back to the literary community after winning a publishing prize. She spread her literary love to the North Carolina Poetry Society, too.
If you have club history to share, we want to hear from you. As we move toward our centennial year in 2022, we want to bring our story into the 21st century, building on the history former CWC President Dede Wilson compiled for the 75th anniversary in 1997.
