SOTF: Standard Registration Ends August 31

HAIS Heads & Trustees Workshop: Oct. 29
This workshop is intended for senior administration and trustees from HAIS member schools.
Guest speakers include Donna Orem, NAIS President, and Arnold Laanui, FBI Special Agent & Advanced Instructor.
Date: Tuesday, October 29, 2019 
Time: Workshop: 8:00am - 4:30pm & Reception: 4:45pm - 7:00pm

Host an HAIS Learning Walk
The goal of the Learning Walks is to improve practice through observation and reflection, while building collaboration among colleagues from HAIS member schools. Participants will spend a day at a host school, observing student learning, teaching and learning strategies, and learning environments. This experience is also intended to give participants the opportunity to reflect on their own practice and connect with like-minded educators. The visit will last approximately 5 hours and HAIS will cover the cost of food and beverages, in an amount of up to $25 per participant. Once we have identified the host schools and dates, we will open registration for participation by educators from HAIS member schools.
Group Size: Limited to 12 Participants
Save-The-Date! Stanford Vaping Prevention Training: Nov. 6 & 7
Presented in partnership with the Department of Health - Tobacco Prevention and Education Program, with funding made available by the Tobacco Prevention & Control Trust Fund.
  • 6th - Oahu - Location: Saint Louis School
  • 7th - Maui - Location: Kamehameha Schools, Maui Campus
Cost: Free
Schools are encouraged to send teams of 3 - head of school to attend the first 1 1/2 hours and 1 administrator and 1 teacher to attend the complete training.
Travel Scholarships will be available for HAIS Neighbor Island member schools for both trainings.

DHS Credit at SOTF
The HAIS Early Learning Committee has identified 25+ sessions at the Schools of the Future Conference that meet the training requirements set forth by the Hawai'i Department of Human Services (DHS). Certificates will be available for pick-up during the conference, at the HSTE bookstore.

How it Works:
  • Name badge QR codes will be scanned at the start of each eligible session.
  • Certificates to be printed on-site at the HSTE Conference Bookstore, located in the Exhibition Hall
  • Certificates will be issued for each qualifying session attended and will be held at the Bookstore until the conclusion of the Conference.

We are seeking student entertainment for the SOTF Conference, on October 3 and 4. Preference will be given to schools that have not offered entertainment at past SOTF conferences and selections will be determined on a first-come basis. If you are interested please submit the interest form by August 30. Notifications will be sent out by September 6.

2019 SOTF Student Presentation CFP: Deadline Sept . 6
Student presentations will be on Friday, October 4. All student presentations will take place between 12:00pm - 1:00pm, during the timeframe that was previously allocated for Like-Minded Sessions. Student proposals should address best teaching practices and should inspire thinking about learning from the student's perspective. All proposals can include up to 3 students and must include 1 teacher who will serve as an advisor and point person. Please see the Form below!

Announcement Regarding 2020 Young Artists of Hawai'i Exhibition
The Hawai'i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) and Hawai'i State Art Museum (HiSAM) will not be sponsoring the 2020 Young Artists of Hawai'i Exhibition. Instead they will be hosting events and activities related to the 13th Festival of Pacific Arts & Culture (FESTPAC} from June 10 - 21, 2020. They will resume sponsorship of the Young Artists of Hawai'i Exhibition in 2021.
EPI 2020 Teacher Fellowship: LAST CHANCE to Apply by Sept. 1
Ecology Project International's (EPI) Teacher Fellowships are field-based, science education programs in Costa Rica, Baja, Belize, and Yellowstone. Teachers will work with conservation researchers while gaining familiarity with methods for bringing field science into the classroom. Each PD program is 8 days, and EPI funds the majority of the costs, including meals, lodging, and course activities and instruction. Formal and informal educators from any country, working with middle school to college-age students, are welcome to apply.

"Rise of the Wahine" Showing & Panel Discussion: Sept. 8
Delta Kappa Gamma Hawai'i presents a showing of the award-winning documentary "Rise of the Wahine" at McKinley High School. The documentary will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Dave Shoji, Beth McLachlin, Ron Okamura, Marilyn Moniz-Kaho'ohanohano, and Dean Kaneshiro. Parking is free on the McKinley campus. UH Manoa and its College of Education is hosting Open Houses for their Education Doctorate in Professional Educational Practice, or the EdD program. 2019 Localicious Recipe Contest: Submit recipes until Sept. 13
Inspiring the next generation of chefs to create their own locally-inspired dish, the Hawai'i Food & Wine Festival will be taking submissions for its annual  Hawaii Gas Presents   Localicious Recipe Contest .  Open to students in grades 4 - 12, keiki can submit a healthy, original recipe that includes locally grown ingredients. These recipes will be screened in 2 age groups through a committee of chefs, with the top finalists competing in the Keiki in the Kitchen cook-off. Recipes must be submitted between Aug. 19 - Sept. 13. Math Learning Difficulties & Strategies Workshop: Sept. 14
Math difficulties range in severity/topic areas, and may be further complicated by co-existing difficulties in language comprehension, affecting students abilities to effectively manage word problems. Topics to be covered: critical math skills that are typically achieved during childhood; brain function and specific cognitive areas as they pertain to math learning; concepts such as visual spatial perception, working memory, processing speed and fluid reasoning. Workshop participants will receive a set of manipulatives to keep and use in their teaching to support student learning.

Immigration, Exclusion, & The American Dream: now on Sept. 30
This event will include an abbreviated film screening and panel discussion about the power of teaching the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act to reflect on current times. Engage with members of the Chinese Community Action Coalition, Dr. Gregory Mark and Dr. Bryan Man, who will share knowledge about the history of Chinese in Hawai'i, personal stories, and findings from their scholarship and research that link to contemporary immigration debates. Drums Alive Movement and Rhythms Workshop: Oct. 13
DRUMTASTIC® Ability Beats™ is presented by Drums Alive and is for educators of all grade levels and disciplines, as well as therapists, recreation leaders, and fitness instructors who work with children and adults with diverse abilities. Participants will learn how to use movements that inspire both children and adults with diverse abilities, demonstrating how this research-based fitness, wellness, brain, and body program can foster individual creativity in a fun environment. They will coordinate kinesthetic awareness, neuro-muscular skills, cardiovascular conditioning, flexibility, strength, health, and wellness activities into an inspiring experience that accommodates physiological, emotional and cognitive needs.

Hawai'i Youth Sustainability Challenge Project: Apply by Oct. 19
O'ahu students from public, private, and charter schools islandwide wanting to help their schools or communities go green now have a chance to earn funding to back their big ideas. Kupu, in partnership with Kokua Hawai'i Foundation, is launching its 4th annual HYSC project-grant program, which supports student-led environmental initiatives. Individual projects will be awarded up to $1,000 based on scope and need. Project proposals can be submitted individually, in groups, or involve a collaboration between two or more schools. Each team must include one teacher adviser and will also be paired with an outside mentor to support project development. Grant recipients will be selected in late Fall, and projects will commence in January 2020. Projects are required to be implemented and completed by the end of the 2019-2020 school year.
UH Manoa SOEST Open House 2019: Oct. 25 - 26
The 2019 UH Manoa School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) Open House is approaching, and will include:
  • Learning about volcanoes, tsunamis, El Niño, planetary exploration, hurricanes, coastal erosion, marine ecosystems, and more.
  • Hands-on activities and demonstrations for kids of all ages.
  • Meeting the scientists who are making the discoveries and touring their state-of-the-art facilities.
They are still accepting reservations for middle and high school groups of 10 or more. Individuals and groups of less than 10 are welcome either day without reservations.
