Banned Books Week
September 22-28, 2019
Banned Books Week 2019
Each year, the American Library Association Office for Intellectual Freedom records hundreds of attempts by individuals and groups to have books removed from library shelves and from classrooms. In 2018, 483 books were challenged or banned.
Banned Books Week is an annual event that celebrates our freedom to read. It was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in libraries, schools and bookstores.
This year's theme, "Censorship Leaves Us in the Dark," urges everyone to "Keep the Light On" and read a banned book. For a list of banned or challenged books, click here.
