Banned Books Week
September 22-28, 2019
Each year, the American Library Association Office for Intellectual Freedom records hundreds of attempts by individuals and groups to have books removed from library shelves and from classrooms. In 2018, 483 books were challenged or banned.
Banned Books Week is an annual event that celebrates our freedom to read. It was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in libraries, schools and bookstores.

Children's Highlights

The six-week Fall Storytime session for children ages 15 months through five years old will run from September 30 to November 8.
| The stories, rhymes, flannel board activities and movement exercises featured in the storytimes are selected based on the development stages of each group. Programs include: |

Henry the Hedgehog

Join Glastonbury author Karen Tauber-Vigeant, who will read her picture book, Henry the Hedgehog Who Lived on Hebron Avenue. Henry lives in a barn next to an elementary school where he watches the children on the playground while wishing he could join them. |
Follow Henry's adventures as he finds a way to explore the school and discover the wonders inside. The author will sign books available to purchase at the program for $15 cash or check. No registration is needed.

University of Hartford have partnered together to offer an informational session about the college admissions process and financial aid. Learn everything you need to know about deadlines, when to submit applications, types of financial aid, how to fill out the FAFSA and where to look for outside scholarships. The Welles-Turner Memorial Library is partnering with C2 Education to offer free full-length practice tests for the PSAT, ACT and SAT for local high school students. Participants will get to experience a real test environment and will receive a score report with a comprehensive analysis of strengths and weaknesses via email. |
Please bring your own calculator and pencils - all other supplies will be provided. Seating is limited, so reserve your spot online or by calling the Reference desk at 860-652-7720.
Zen Garden
Tuesday, September 24 from 6:30-7:30

| A tabletop Zen garden, or "meditation garden," is composed of rocks and sand, which is raked to represent ripples in water. Arranging a Zen garden is a great way to relax, or refocus thoughts. |

Eric Judge, Financial Advisor, Edward Jones, will present his debut publication, Out of Town Landlord: My Adventures During the Great Recession. The author will tell of his adventures purchasing out-of-town rental properties during one of the most tumultuous economic times in our recent history. |
The scope of the book covers Judge's initial reason for investing, and he outlines how to do it successfully while avoiding potential pitfalls. The book will be available for purchase. Seating is limited, so registration is requested online or at the Reference Desk at 860-652-7720.

Come taste with us! The cookbook of the month will be available at Reference at the start of the month for your recipe selection.This month's cookbooks are: The Barefoot Contessa Cookbooks by Ina Garten. Free copies of the recipes will be provided to you - just let us know what you pick! |
You can take the recipes home to cook, then bring your creation in for fellow cookbook club goers. No registration needed ~ drop in with a dish using the featured book's recipes.

Fall Book Sale

The Friends of the Welles-Turner Memorial Library will hold their next book sale on the front lawn of the library on Saturday, September 7 from 9am to 5pm. In case of inclement weather, the sale will be held next door in the TD Bank parking garage. |

The Friends are looking for volunteers to work at the September 7 book sale. Coverage throughout the sale is needed, as well as help with setup and cleanup. If you'd like to volunteer, please contact:
