Focus on what you can control
Are you unsure about the future of your improvement project? Or perhaps your project has lost momentum because your organization is adapting to ongoing health system changes?
It might be time to take a step back, regroup, and look at what is within your locus of control.

Think of some small but significant ways you can influence the improvement climate in your team or unit.  Here are some examples to get you inspired:
  • Get the most out of your meetings. Set reasonable objectives, ensure that key decisions are made, and follow up on action items.
  • Avoid repeating barrier assessments. These will only discourage you and your team. Instead ask stakeholders to attempt tiny tests of change and report back.
  • Look for ways to improve role clarity among your peers or staff. Make sure to use a consensus approach! This will contribute to psychological safety on your team.
  • Give and receive feedback regularly. Ensure that the feedback you give out is timely, direct, and objective.
  • Find out what matters to your peers or staff. Take every opportunity for a brief social interaction. A quick hello or a coffee break can build trust that will enhance your improvement efforts.
