A Message from the Executive Director

With the warm days we've been having lately, it is easy for our thoughts to turn to spring. I hope you'll plan a visit to the Landmark in the next few months to enjoy our pastoral views with the flowers and trees in bloom. Take your pick of the events and offerings below as an excuse to get out and enjoy what Waterford has to offer this spring!
In our feature article this month, read about all the ways you can participate in our 4th Annual Historic Waterford Trail Run on April 25th. We'd love to have you join us as a sponsor, runner, volunteer, or all of the above! Also in this newsletter is an overview of our offerings for all four sessions of the Waterford Craft School this year. Act quickly to secure your spot, as classes are already filling up!
Mark your calendar for several events coming up this month and next, including cultural events, the Waterford Foundation Annual meeting, and much more. And don't forget to read to the end to hear about a trio of Waterford ladies whose good humor buoyed the hopes of the Union-sympathizing residents of the village during the Civil War.
Enjoy!

Pam Allen has been involved with the trail run for several years. She diligently works behind the scenes to make this event possible. From trail setting, clearing and marking, to event set-up and clean-up. She helps to get event sponsors and is also a Trailblazer Lead coach and helped 60 WES students train for 8 weeks to cross that finish line. Pam never seeks appreciation, but totally deserves it!
Pam, we are so thankful for your commitment to the Waterford Foundation.
Volunteers are still needed to help on race day this year. If you would like to volunteer for a few hours in the morning on Saturday, April 25th, please contact oldschool@waterfordfoundation.org for more information.

In honor of Women's History month, in this issue we want to highlight the work of three young ladies of Waterford during the Civil War. Many have heard the story of the
Waterford News,
a pro-Union newspaper written in the Confederate South by Sarah Steer, Lizzie Dutton, and Lida Dutton. As Chamberlin, Souders, and Souders write, "publication of such a brazenly anti-secession paper took courage", and the authors realized this, describing their work as a "hazardous undertaking".
The "fair Editresses" produced eight issues between May 1864 and April 1865. Their paper developed quite a following, with the first two issues found in the Library of Congress in President Lincoln's papers. In addition to the news of the day, each issue contains a number of lighthearted advertisements and notices, including the following "Pop-gun" item from the inaugural May 1864 issue:
"[General Order No. 6.]
The young ladies of Waterford, Loudoun, Co., Va., are hereby notified to meet the first opportunity and lend their mutual aid in filling a large mud-hole with stone, said mud-hole being located in the middle of Second Street, and the men have driven around it so much that it is extending each side. Being fearful the gentlemen will get their feet muddy, the ladies will try and remedy it."
For more Civil War era Waterford news and humor, read all eight issues of the Waterford News, introduced and annotated by T. M. Chamberlin, B. C. Souders, and J. M. Souders. The booklet is available
here
at or at our offices in the Old School.
