Establish Rituals and Routines for Bathroom Use and Hand-washing
|
|
Young students may have toileting accidents for non-medical reasons. Rituals and routines for frequent bathroom use and hand-washing need to be established. Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten teachers and teaching assistants should create a plan for managing bowel and bladder accidents for their students. Special education case managers may include toileting and diapering plans for students on their IEP.
Anyone working in a pre-kindergarten or kindergarten classroom is expected to assist a student following an accident. Staff and students require sanitary, private space with access to a sink. Try to limit health office bathroom use to students with episodic illness and specific health conditions to decrease the exposure to emerging illnesses. Hand-washing with running water is imperative following a bowel or bladder accident for students and staff. Toileting supplies are the responsibility of the building and include: plastic bags, non-latex gloves, disposable wipes and extra clothing.
Use the school nurse as a resource to plan for toileting accidents, and to guide staff in the prevention of illnesses. In Minnesota the primary resource for diapering procedures and childhood illnesses is the Infectious Diseases in Childcare Settings and Schools Manual found at
http://www.hennepin.us/childcaremanual#Sec1
.

Concerned About a Student's Hearing?
|
|
The Department of Student Health and Wellness has revised the process for identifying students with hearing loss. We will only screen kindergarten and first-graders who have never had a hearing screening done by Saint Paul Public Schools (SPPS) or have failed a hearing test in their Early Childhood Screening for 3–5 year-olds.
SPPS audiologists will help increase screening accuracy and align with current trends and technology. Licensed school nurses (LSN) continue to be committed to assisting in Child Find for students with potential hearing loss and health conditions that impact learning.
Concerned about a student’s hearing? Refer the student to the LSN assigned to their school or program
. The LSN will review the student’s health information, communicate with the family and plan how to evaluate the student’s hearing.
Observations that may indicate a hearing loss:
• Delayed speech
• Unclear speech
• Does not follow directions
• Often says, “Huh?”
• Turns volume up too high on devices

Snow Removal Contracts and Procedures
|
|
- This spreadsheet shows which vendors manage snow removal and which sites are managed by SPPS grounds and labor staff
- This Google document tracks snow removal for each snow event
- green (good)
- yellow
- red (needs assistance)
Please note that SPPS Facilities has budgeted for five snow removal events greater than 3 inches.
Snow storms that are less than three inches will be managed through sweeping, shoveling, snowblowing and salt as needed.
Your head engineer is still your first point of contact for maintenance and snow removal needs. Please check the
snow removal status sheet
for any information already submitted for your site.
If you have any questions or concerns about snow removal this season please contact
