The deadline for parents to select which instructional model they prefer for their children this fall has been extended to Monday, July 27 at 5:00 p.m. For more information, look for the School Reopening Plans graphic on the front page of the OCPS website. We have also included an illustration below which offers an easy-to-follow comparison between the three options available to our school community.

Our Lake Nona families did a wonderful job in supporting our request for help last spring with our annual parent survey which we have been using since to help us with our 2020-2021 school improvement planning. Now, faced with this unforeseen Covid-19 situation, we ask our parents to take a moment if they have not done so and make their school reopening choice using the Fall 2020 Choice Registration Form found in the link just above.

Thank you for your support and best wishes for a safe and healthy week ahead!

With Knight Pride,

Dr. Stephanie R. Jackson, Ed.D.
Principal
Lake Nona Middle School

KNIGHT SUCCESS HIGHLIGHT FOR MONDAY, JULY 27!
Our Lake Nona Treble Voices Choir was selected to perform at the Florida Music Educators Association President's Concert on January 8. Directors Courtney Connelly and Ashley Majka led our Knights and they are pictured above receiving the "2020 Middle School Enrollment Award." This special award recognizes the effectiveness of school programs that excel in recruitment and retention of students. To qualify for this award, 45% of a school's student body must be enrolled in a music course. Lake Nona had 56% of our student body enrolled in a performing arts course in 2019-2020!

KNIGHT SUCCESS HIGHLIGHT FOR MONDAY, JULY 27!
Our boys basketball team started off the game with a great lead during a very tough contest vs. Meadow Wood Middle's Stallions on their court last season. However, Meadow Woods did not back down and the game ended up going into three overtimes!! With 4.8 seconds left on the clock, our Knights were down 34-36. Eighth grader Dionel Cruz got fouled at the 3 point line and converted making ALL THREE of his free throws and winning the game for our Knights with a final score of 37-36! (Dionel Cruz is pictured above knocking down the game winning free throw.)
Our Knights celebrating on Meadow Woods' home court after their tremendous 3 overtime victory (please note the expressions of some of the fans)! LNMS is known for fielding very competitive teams during all four sports seasons moving into playoff or championship contention on a regular basis. We have an excellent athletics department and our student-athletes are extremely well coached!

Monday's Motivational Moment!

AIM FOR YOUR OWN MOONSHOT

Many people may have forgotten, but this past Monday, July 20 was the 51st anniversary of Apollo 11's lunar module, "Eagle," landing on the moon. This was a seemingly impossible feat, but the planning and preparation for the Apollo 11 mission to achieve the goal was astounding!

In the summer of 1969, Neil Armstrong (1930-2012) was the commander of Apollo 11. Armstrong strove to do what no other mission had before: make a manned lunar landing. While Armstrong expected to fully accomplish that, he still rated a moon landing a nine out of 10 on a scale of difficulty. In a later interview, Neil Armstrong's son Mark said, "My dad had a saying: 'Success is where preparation meets opportunity.' He said work hard and prepare yourself, because it's very difficult to predict what the future may bring and you want to be ready when the opportunity of a lifetime comes your way."

The lesson for our Knights? Commander Armstrong's words and the success of the Apollo 11 mission 51 years ago offers a great example of the benefits from setting hard to reach, but achievable goals. That is, if you stay focused and continually put forth your very best efforts!
