Senior Spotlight: Alex George
An Article by Staff Member Meghan Petruzzi
|
|
The euphonium is Alex George’s favorite instruments. Rest assured it is not one of the instruments from Dr. Seuss, although that would be pretty cool. He attributes the euphonium as the catalyst for his love of music, and the first instrument that he truly enjoyed playing. Beyond the euphonium he also plays the ukelele and dabbles with the piano, trombone, and trumpet. Alex values the relationships he has made through music, including the friends he met at UNH’s Summer Youth Music School. For Alex music has not only been a soundtrack to his life but it has also been the composer- stringing together musicians and experiences that he may not have had otherwise. Last year, he was selected to join the Tri-M Music Honor Society, of which he was later elected as its first president. Also, last year, he auditioned for the NHMEA All-State music festival. Based on his audition score, he was selected to play in the All-State brass choir and concert band where he scored the second-highest for the euphonium in the state of NH. Alex has found his passion in music, and is considering music as a career after high school. His back up plan is to pursue Chemistry because he enjoyed solving big, complex problems in chemistry.
Beyond music, Alex’s favorite school experience was going on the trip to Costa Rica where he immersed in a culture drastically different from his own. For Alex learning new things makes him tick, so its no surprise how much he loved to learn about the Spanish language, Costa Rican history, the Costa Rican economy, and the Costa Rican wildlife. Here is a link to audio of Alex playing his euphonium in the NH All-State band.

Senior Spotlight: Ian Fraize
An Article by Staff Member Jeff Adams
|
|
Ian Fraize is that quiet student that you want to get to know for his sense of humor and knowledge of computers. Math teacher, Mrs. Ann Black, is quoted saying “Ian has a great sense of humor, I miss hearing his stapler jokes in Statistics and that he is a great person, kind, funny and honest.” Mrs. Heather Wheeler says “ Ian is a student who takes his school responsibilities seriously and can be depended upon to accomplish the work he sets out to do. He is interested in many things and so capable, it will be a pleasure to see where he chooses to go next!” Ian is that student that likes to push the limits of the requirements for a project, the rules of the class or the world in general. He is great to have in class for his humor and for challenging the teacher in a fun way. I have had Ian in my Creating Games, Desktop Publishing, HTML, and Financial Skills classes and I was amazed by his skills on the computer and his willingness to tell or show how he did something. Ian is the student that makes the class fun without disrupting the class. He has is unique way of humor is what makes the class fun. Ian just loves to walk on the edge.
Ian is currently in his second year in Computer Science at the Seacoast School of Technology, where he is improving his already impressive computer skills. After graduating from Sanborn Regional High School Ian has ambitions to attend college and follow a degree in computer science or electrical engineering where he could then follow a career in low level or embedded software development. I have always been impressed with Ian’s computer knowledge and I love his sense of humor in and out of the classroom. He always keeps me on my toes; I never know what he will come up with next. I look forward to seeing what he will accomplish in the future with his all impressive computer skills. Could he be the next Mark Zuckerberg or Bill Gates?

News From the School Counseling Office
|
|
October and November have been very busy in the counseling office. The counselors have begun to implement the Choose Love curriculum in all of our Sophomore Advisories. The Choose Love curriculum is a Social Emotional Learning curriculum which focuses on 4 themes - Courage, Gratitude, Forgiveness and Compassion. The goal of the curriculum is to develop safe, healthy, problem solving communities that enhance student learning. Our hope is that students will develop an increased sense of empathy and acceptance for one another. If students feel connected and demonstrate resilience, they will be less likely to engage in harm towards themselves or others.
On November 13th, the counseling department in conjunction with NH Higher Education Assistance Foundation hosted “I Applied Day”. I Applied Day is a day to apply to all NH colleges both private and public, 4 year and 2 year for FREE. We had 110 students apply to over 350 schools! We are looking forward to seeing the students’ acceptances start to roll in.
On December 4th, all Juniors will participate in the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). Historically, folks have assumed that this exam is only used to determine acceptance into the various military branches specific careers. More recently, the counselors have learned about the tremendous amount of career exploration/interest feedback a student can receive from the exam and we have decided to use this information to kick off our Junior College Search season.
On December 10th, all sophomores will attend a presentation by the Seacoast School of Technology (SST). SST is our local Career and Technical Education Center. Students will learn about the various programs offered through SST and will be given information to sign up for a visit day in January. SST is offered as part of the school day at Sanborn. Students earn 3 credits for the classes, are bussed to SST every day for periods 3,4 and 5 for year 1 programs. Students also have an opportunity to earn college credits and industry certifications through the various programs.
On January 13th, parents of seniors can receive help from NHHEAF on their Free Applications for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). NHHEAF staff will be at Sanborn to assist parents who have questions or who might have situations which require more assistance. There are only 16 slots available and they fill up quick! If you would like to sign up, slots are available from 1-5, will be filled on a first come, first serve basis and can be reserved by calling Deirdre Cotter in the Counseling office at 642-3341 x 108.
Finally, it is important for us to remember that the holidays can be stressful for everyone. If you find that your child is struggling with anxiety or depression or you just feel as if something is “just not quite right”, we have many resources available to you. We have counselors from Seacoast Mental Health Center as well as the Center for Life Management in our schools. We use a wrap around services approach with local mental health counselors, juvenile probation and other local resources to support our students. Please reach out to your child’s counselor if you have any questions or concerns.

Parents of Juniors: We Need Your Consent for April's SAT Test!
|
|
All grade 11 students will take the SAT during the school day on April 14th. Since this is the state's accountability test, there is no testing fee. Students will be able to send their scores for free to 4 schools from this test.
With this test, the College Board will also offer an optional program called 'Student Search Service." Parents who want their child to be included in this program must give consent as NH state law prevents schools from allowing students to send their personal information without parental permission. Please be aware that this is a for-profit service that College Board provides. If you give consent, your child's information may be sold to colleges, universities, and other scholarship organizations. In return, you and your child will receive information on opportunities that may be of interest to you and your child.
Please click on the button below to complete the form granting, or not granting, consent for the optional component. Every parent must respond to the school with a "yes" or "no".

Math Team Update
A Message From Co-Advisors Ms. Black and Dr. Young
|
|
The Sanborn Math Team began its season this week with a double meet at Epping HS. Why a double meet? Well, last October we had a "snow day" on math meet day, so the league had to catch up. The Southeastern Conference Math League has eight schools: Coe-Brown, Epping, Newmarket, Oyster River, Raymond, St Thomas, Portsmouth Christian, and Sanborn.
It was a successful day for our Mathletes. We had several first-time mathletes, which is awesome. Several students had"Perfect 10s" on their problem sheets, earning them public recognition and candy, errr... health food. We could use some 9th grade mathy students, though, to fill out our team's roster....
And....Jacqueline Genthner was announced as the 2019-2020 SRHS Math Team captain. Congrats Jackie!!
The next math meet is at Oyster River on Dec 12th.
Ms Black and Dr Young, Math Team co-advisors.

Youth in Action and SoROCK Art Gala
|
|
On December 13th, Sanborn Youth in Action and SoROCK are partnering to host a youth lead art gala at Sanborn Regional High School. It is a night celebrating community, compassion, and strength in hopes of increasing prevention and decreasing the stigma of mental illness. We recognize that art can be a powerful tool to start meaningful conversation. The students of Youth in Action hope that this event will be a way to bring awareness to mental illness and the importance of ending the stigma. We hope that you will consider creating a piece of art that answers the question "What does mental health look like to you?" (for younger students- "What do feelings look like to you?") with a focus on the themes of hope, recovery, community, or support. This event is open to the community and all ages- with prize/judging categories of elementary, middle school, high school and adults. If you are interested in submitting original work please register using the button below:

SRHS PTO Launches its Back to School "Un-Fundraiser"
|
|
We are asking for your support for our 2019 back to school Un-Fundraiser. Simply put, an Un-Fundraiser is a way to donate money without having to sell or buy anything. Isn’t that the best?? 100% of your tax-deductible donation goes directly to the SRHS PTO, and then it goes right to our kids, which is the best place to put it! Where does this money go you might ask?
Each year, our PTO supports the following kinds of activities:
• Starter cash for the in-coming freshmen student activities account
• Classroom grants, up to $250 per teacher, to fund innovative programming
• Scholarships to Sanborn Seniors
• Funds to support class activities such as the Senior Cruise in Boston.
• Senior Success Day
• Teachers’ meals for the open houses & Teacher Appreciation Week
• Strategies for College Presentation for parents
|
|
We hope you were able to appreciate the sarcasm and humor in this form of request and we thank you for your time and monetary donation.
|
|

An Update From Southern Rockingham Coalition for Youth (SoROCK)
|
|
We have had so much going on this week! We kicked off Red Ribbon and Kindness weeks by sponsoring
mental health speaker Ivy Watts who presented to all the High School students in both the Sanborn and
Timberlane districts and also to the community on Monday evening. Her message was important and
well received! It is so important that we continue to talk about mental health and reduce the stigma!
We hope that the community presentation will be available soon on video. If you would like the link
please email sorocknhcc@gmail.com
This week our Sanborn Youth In Action group was very busy making kindness-grams! A kindness-gram
included a mental health awareness sticker designed by one of our members along with a “build bridges
of kindness” bracelet and some candy with a special message of kindness or encouragement chosen or
written by the sender. The group did this as a fundraiser for prevention and will be available during
lunch’s again through the coming week. Staff and students have enjoyed sending messages and many
days have been brightened!
This years Red Ribbon week theme is “Send a Message” and Mrs. Feeney our amazing Student
Assistance Counselor and Youth In Action co-facilitator, is collecting letters from students to their future
selves to be delivered date of their choosing.
This morning the middle school welcomed the theater group the Improbable Players to approach the
subject of substance use, how it starts and how to resist. Counselors were available to students after all
presentations this week.
SoRock is still seeking funding and welcomes your involvement! If you would like to help or attend our
next meeting please email sorocknhcc@gmail.com for more information

PTO Clothing & Shoe Donation Bins
|
When you drop your unwanted clothing and shoes off in these bins, the SRHS PTO gets paid based on the weight of the clothing! This is a really easy way to help our school. All PTO proceeds go directly back to programming and scholarships that directly benefit our students.
NOTE: Shoes must go in a separate bin.
Did you know? From April of 2015 - May 2017, this fundraiser has helped us raise nearly $2400.00 for the PTO. Help us double that number by sharing this opportunity with your friends, your family, and your neighbors!
