PRESIDENT'S LETTER

Dear Ladies,

A big thank you to Susan Loselle, Mary Lee Clayton, Dorothy Packer and their committee as well as Elizabeth Greenawalt, our Office Manager, for making the Clothing Tag Sale such a success.  It was our biggest clothing sale to date with total net sales coming in at $14,000.  Bravo!

With the clothing sale behind us and Sip & Savor as well, we're looking ahead to our December fundraiser.  Let's help Dorothy Curran and her committee make "Sounds for A Starry Night" a successful evening.  It's a world class concert brought to you in a very intimate space, our Clubhouse...don't miss out, buy your tickets today, send it out to your friends and invite them as well. There's limited seating!

The holiday season is upon us and this is the time when I get to thank all of you for your wonderful contributions to the Westport Woman's Club.

It is only because of all of you, our members, helping with our fundraisers, participating on our committees and supporting us with financial contributions of your dues that we are able to continue to make such a difference in the lives of our scholarship and grant recipients.

I remind you and thank you for all of this before I make my plea to remember this worthwhile organization in your year-end giving or to add the WWC as a beneficiary to your will.  Yes, the fundraisers fund our grants and scholarships that we give out every year, but we have a house and grounds to maintain.  Lea Ruegg understood this.  You all know that for many years we have given out a Reugg Grant.  The endowment has recently been dissolved and we have been given a one-time bequest of $160,000 to add to our investments.  Her generous bequest has helped and will continue to help the WWC with its work for many, many years to come.

If you would like to make a contribution or add the WWC as a beneficiary in your will as Lea Ruegg did to create the Ruegg Grant, I hope you know that your generosity will have a lasting impact on the Westport community.

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and Happy Holidays!

CLUB DAY

Date:      Monday, December 9 (note new date)
Time:     11:30 am
Where:   Bedford Hall

Since Thanksgiving falls at the very end of November, we realized that members might be out of town for the long holiday weekend.  So... December Club Day will be held on the second Monday of the month, December 9.  Please mark your calendars, ladies.

Remember to bring one can of fruit on Club Day to contribute to the "FRUITS OF OUR LABOR" basket.  For more information on this, please see the Food Closet article in this Bulletin.

Plan to join us on Monday, December 9, for Club Day, which will be hosted by our Gourmet Group, headed up by Lisa Allison and Barbara Gladnick.  Please be sure to make your reservation with Elizabeth by  1:00 pm on Wednesday, December 4 .

Aux Delices will be serving Crispy Salmon Cakes with Herb Aioli; the vegetarian option will be Vegetable Burgers with Herb Aioli.  Accompanying the entrees will be a Farro Salad with Roasted Root Vegetables and Baby Spinach. Sliced Italian Bread with butter will be available, and dessert will be Lemon Bars.  Doesn't that sound yummy and healthy, especially after a weekend of indulging in all those Thanksgiving goodies?

If you have a serious food allergy or wish to order the vegetarian option, please email me by Wednesday, December 4.  If you need to cancel a reservation, please do so by calling Elizabeth by Wednesday, December 4, to avoid being charged.

Remember to bring your can of fruit for the "FRUITS OF OUR LABOR" cause
Hope to see you at Club Day on Monday, December 9th!

PROGRAM

Holiday Concert with Richard "Cookie" Thomas

Richard is a versatile jazz vocalist from Stamford, CT, whose career began in Philadelphia in 1960 when he had the opportunity, at age fourteen, to open for B.B. King.  He has since gone on to have an impressive career in music consisting of professional recordings, headlining many prestigious venues, and maintaining various professional affiliations.

Richard's voice is especially suited to well-known classic standards.  He draws his inspiration from the likes of Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, and Johnny Hartman.  In fact you can hear a bit of each when Richard sings.  His smooth baritone voice lies somewhere in between the deep richness of a Johnny Hartman and Billy Eckstine and the lighter tones of Nat King Cole and Lou Rawls. Like the traditional balladeer, he delivers every song in a straightforward manner, each telling a story.

Please join us for what will be a very enjoyable performance!

BYOB FRIDAY

Date:    Friday, December 13
Time:   4:00 - 5:30 pm
Place:   Club Kitchen

"Bring something to sip and nibbles to share; it won't be the same if you're not there!"

IMPORTANT NOTE: No worries! This BYOB will be on December's Friday #2 (not #3), leaving plenty of time for procrastinators to finish holiday planning and shopping!

Come join us and make light of a short December day with good company, good cheer and some tasty nibbles! It's not too soon to discuss your holiday plans, menu choices, airline reservations or new year's resolutions! Plus--inquiring minds want to know how Thanksgiving went, what wines you bought at Sip & Savor and which performance at Sounds for a Starry Night was your favorite.
So...Please "come as you are" and join us in the kitchen!

Just Bring Yourself Over Briefly, to say hello (or linger longer), anytime 4:00 to 5:30 pm, and be sure to Bring Your Own Beverage of choice and nibbles to share. Whether you are new to the WWC or a Member since "forever," this is an easy and entertaining way to meet fellow members, discover a delicious hors d'oeuvre worth making, hear about an exhibit worth seeing, share your winter vacation escape plans, compare parking strategies at the new SoNo Collection, ask Alexa what Siri's doing for New Year's, or simply launch a lovely weekend.
As always, we operate picnic/tailgate style, bringing our own simple set-ups and serving implements, then disappearing without footprints or fingerprints.

CANASTA

Date:  Tuesdays
Time:  1:00 - 4:00 pm
Place:  Living Room

We play on Tuesdays from 1:00 - 4:00 pm - if there is a minimum of four players.  Emails are sent out at the beginning of each week to members who are interested in playing.  If you want to be included in these weekly emails, please contact me to put your name on that list.

All players are welcome, regardless of skill level and experience.  You do not need to have your own Canasta cards and tray but, if you do, please bring them.

Lessons are given, also on Tuesdays from 1:00 - 4:00 pm, to members who would like to learn to play the game or haven't played in years but want to brush up on their skills. Please contact me if you are interested.

COMMUNITY SERVICES

Date:   Tuesday, November 19   (There will be no meeting in December)
Time:   10:00 am
Location:  Living Room

The grant requests have arrived, all 67 of them, and we are in the reviewing process.  Each member takes a few applications home and then we all discuss them as a group.  Please join us for our next meeting on Tuesday, November 19, at 10:00 am, and add your input to the discussion.  If you are unable to come to the November meeting but would like to review an application or two, please reach out to me.

I would also like to ask you to help with the Toy Drive. You can either bring to the club new unwrapped toys, gift cards or a check made out to The Children's Connection. There is a drop off box by the office.  It will be there from November through our December luncheon. Please see Pattie Takita's information in this bulletin.

I want to thank Audrey Rabinowitz for organizing the Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. It's so kind of you to have done this for fourteen years!

Also, I want to thank Gloria Smithson for the incredible job she did of getting the word out about the grant applications.

Hope to see many of you at our next meeting, November 19, at 10:00 am, in the living room.

ANNUAL HOLIDAY TOY DRIVE

As the Woman's Club has done for many years, we are having our Annual Holiday Toy Drive for children who are neglected, abused and undergoing difficult times. Members are being asked to bring NEW UNWRAPPED gifts, as well as gift cards, cash and checks, through November and until our Club Day luncheon on December 9. There is a drop off box outside the office.

While gifts are welcome for all ages, there is a particular need for newborns and teens.   Favorite requests are: infant toys and clothing, Fisher-Price, Playskool and similar sturdy toys, dolls (all sizes), Disney items, balls, trucks, remote control cars and batteries, sports equipment, hand-held video games and batteries. Suggestions for older children are: gift certificates to Kohl's, Target, Bobs, Old Navy, Barnes and Noble; sweatshirts, sweaters, hats, cosmetics, manicure kits.

Checks, made out to The Children's Connection, can be dropped off at the office or given to me at the November or December Club Day luncheons. Your check should contain your name, address and a reference to the Westport Woman's Club in the memo area. We also accept rolls or packages of gift wrap along with ribbons and/or bows.   The Holiday Toy Drive is held well in advance of Christmas in order for the participating agencies to have time to distribute the gifts to approximately 3,000 children in surrounding communities.

Thank you for your generosity.

FOOD CLOSET

The WWC members who volunteer in the Food Closet decided to try something new in December.  We are asking  every person who attends Club Day on Decembe r 9th to bring one can of any  kind of fruit (but especially peaches, pears, or fruit cocktail) to contribute to the " FRUITS OF OUR LABOR"  basket. This container will be set up near the kitchen doors so you can drop off your fruit on your way into Bedford Hall.

Just think, if every member who attends brings one can of fruit, we could collect between eighty to one hundred cans! The Food Closet would then have plenty of fruit to distribute to those in need in our food bags this winter.

Thank you, as always, for your generosity and giving spirit during this holiday season.

LADIES WHO LUNCH

Please join us as we visit the  delightful  Via Sforza for our  Festive Holiday Luncheon .  Because our usual Fourth Tuesday is the day before Christmas, we will be meeting on the Second Tuesday of the month.

DATE:    Tuesday, December 10
TIME:    12:30 pm
PLACE:  234 Post Road West, Westport

My husband and I have dined at this lovely "trattoria" many times over the years, and have never been disappointed.  Enter the rustic stone cottage to find the charming interior, with vaulted ceilings and Italian ceramics hung on the walls.  The staff is always courteous and helpful.  None of this would matter, if the food wasn't good.  And it's more than good -- it's superb!  We've tried many dishes from the wide variety offered and have always been happy.  I can't recommend it more highly!  In my opinion, it's the best Italian restaurant in Connecticut.  I know -- we've tried them all!

They have received rave reviews on  Trip  Advisor and Yelp, including mine.  They offer a wide variety of dishes, including antipasti, salades,  paninis, pizza, pasta and entrees.  You'll find their  menu at --

MAH JONGG

Time:  1:00 - 4:00 pm
Date:   Wednesdays
Place:  Living Room

Mah Jongg is played every Wednesday from 1:00 - 4:00 pm. Emails are sent out at the beginning of each week to members who are interested in playing. If you want to be included in these weekly emails, please contact me to put your name on that list. All players are welcome, regardless of skill level and experience. You do not have to own a Mah Jongg set, but if you have one, please bring it.
You do not need to make a commitment to play each week; come whenever you are available.
Do you want to learn a new skill? Lessons for beginners, and for those who want to brush up on their skills, are given on Wednesdays, starting at 1:00 pm. Please contact me if you are interested or have questions.
Also, I am now taking orders for the 2020 Mah Jongg cards. Standard print is $8.00; large print is $9.00. Please mail checks, payable to me, before December 20. (Friends and family members may also order cards; they don't have to be members). Cards will be mailed directly to you in April 2020. The Club just received a check for $167 from the Mah Jongg League, which represents their charitable contribution based on this past year's group order, bringing the total the Club has received over 12 years to about $1,250.
