Family and Community Engagement (FACE)
Hello Fairview Park Parents!

As we end the 1st quarter next Friday, I hope that your child is feeling success in their year. Please remember, any concerns should be communicated to their homeroom or mentor teacher as a first defense.

I hope that you will be able to attend the Parent University  on Monday, October 28 at 6:30 p.m. at Gilles-Sweet. This program is meant for all parents and I promise you will leave with some important information.

As you know, next week we are celebrating Red Ribbon Week.  This is a great teachable moment for all ages and communities to take a visible stand against drugs. We will be showing our commitment to a drug-free lifestyle through the symbol of the Red Ribbon, October 28 through November 1. Your child is encouraged to dress each day with the different themes so they are actively participating in this great campaign! The mission of the Red Ribbon Campaign® is to present a unified and visible commitment towards the creation of a DRUG - FREE AMERICA.  Below are some resources that may be helpful to you and your family or a friend. Please let me know if you need any other information!

Important Information for Parents
Students who are involved in extracurricular activities-from chess club to cheerleading to chorus-tend to have higher self-esteem and stronger connections to school. But an overloaded schedule with too many activities can have the opposite effect, leaving your child-and you!-stressed. Keep these tips in mind for managing your child's activity load.

Third Grade Field Trip
On October 31st, the third graders at Gilles-Sweet will be taking a walking field trip down West 220th Street to see some of the historical homes in Fairview Park.  As a part of our social studies curriculum, we are learning about how Fairview Park has changed over time and the history of our historical homes. We will be leaving at 10:00 and the walking tour should last around an hour to an hour and a half.  We will be back in time for our regular lunch in the cafeteria.

Coin Challenge
Dear Families,

Our PTA  is collecting funds for our All for Books program November 4-8.

By donating $1 or loose change you can help us:

* Purchase books for classroom libraries
* Give more children easier access to books
* Help get more kids reading, and kids reading more

The All for Books money we collect also helps readers beyond our school and community. Scholastic Book Fairs® matches monetary donations with a donation of up to $1 million in books from The Scholastic Possible Fund, which distributes books to children in need through organizations such as Kids In Need Foundation, Delivering Good, and the National Center for Families Learning.

We are having a "Coin Challenge" contest between the classrooms!  For every $5 that each classroom collects they will receive a raffle ticket to win a new wobble seat.  The classroom that collects the most total amount in each grade also gets a popsicle party! Please send your dollars or loose change donation in the week of November 4-8 .  Your act of kindness helps bring more knowledge, imagination, and a love for reading into the lives of our students.

Sincerely,

Gilles-Sweet PTA
