LETTER FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT

Even as COVID-19 remains a significant global health problem, with some regions being impacted more than others, it is good to see sport slowly returning to training in some areas while others have seen a greater return to competition. This return to work creates challenges for sports physiotherapists, but if any profession can rise to these challenges it is the sports physiotherapy community.

One of the priority areas of work and aims of IFSPT is to foster and facilitate sharing of knowledge, resources and best practice within the sports physiotherapy community. Hopefully, you will have seen IFSPT having a greater social media presence over recent months and a considered push to share resources and links on social media.

This sharing also requires you, individuals and organisations, to help share links and resources with us. If you have any useful links, documents or resources then please share with us on social media or contact Mary Wilkinson about website links.

Due to COVID, there was a sudden rise in free CPD opportunities and online training which I hope you were able to capitalise on. If you or your organisation has free CPD available online, please do get in contact with ISFPT as we want to share this with the whole sports physiotherapy community. On our website in the Education section, we only have 1 link to the UK's open access Physios in Sport YouTube page which has recordings of webinars they organised and you can now watch. We want to add more links and I am sure there are resources out there we can share.

The IFSPT has also recently increased the promotion on social media of all new and renewing Registered International Sports Physical Therapist's (RISPT's). This is our way of recognising these individual's commitment to attain this status through their member organisations approved pathways.

Congratulations to all the new RISPTs! There has certainly been an increase in new RISPTs in recent months which is great to see.

I will end by reminding Member Organisations to send IFSPT content for these newsletters as this is your IFSPT newsletter. The more we communicate and share within the sports physiotherapy community, the more the community will grow.

Take care,

Colin Paterson
Vice President, IFSPT

Early Career Sports Physical Therapists:
Physios In Sport Academy (PISA)
S ian Knott, Education Chair/Vice President ACPSEM, UK

Since the General Meeting in Vancouver in 2019 the new Education and Registration sub-committee of the IFSPT have been reviewing its aims and foci. One area where the committee wants to focus attention is on early career sports physical therapists to compliment the current work with countries developing IFSPT pathways leading to RISPT status.

If your member organization currently has a focus on this group of members, does work to promote physiotherapists to gain experience and work in sport or is willing to share "good practice" in this field, please get in touch with Colin Paterson . The IFSPT wants to share good practice, promote experiences from different countries to generate ideas and collaborations, and for countries to look to develop work in this aspect of career development.

This month, we spotlight Physios in Sport!

Physios Overview
PISA is a branch of the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in sports and Exercise Medicine (ACPSEM) in the UK. It was set up and piloted to provide practical opportunities allowing sports physiotherapists to gain directed experience in sport. It is co-ordinated between myself, the regional ACPSEM representative and local sports physiotherapists.

Its aims are
  • to support the development of a career in sport for physiotherapists
  •  to co-ordinate and support regional sporting events / teams / competitions.
  •  to provide practical safe and supported experience of working in sport to students and newly graduated physiotherapists
  • to provide mentoring opportunities for physiotherapists
  • to provide consistent appropriate physiotherapy cover for sporting events
  • to link with the CPD pathway (shadowing or supervised hours)
  • to provide experiences in a range of sports to allow for the development of a diversity of experiences.
Some of the opportunities have been on a voluntarily basis and others have benefited from some financial remuneration where funds have been available. The underlying principles of PISA are essentially the same for any sport/event although it has been adapted depending on what the requirements of the sport has been. Here are a couple of examples to help put this into context.

Welsh Gymnastics
PISA was approached by Welsh Gymnastics to cover some of their competitions with remuneration. They had had feedback from their membership whereby it was felt that all Tiered 2 competition should have a qualified physiotherapist present. The qualified physiotherapist would be responsible for assessing and managing injuries on the day of competition. The dates of the competitions were sent to PISA and these were put onto a Google calendar. The dates of the competitions were shared through the PISA facebook page, the regional ACPSEM page and the alumni group of students from Cardiff university graduated 2018 and 2019; physiotherapists interested in gaining experience replied with their availability.

The physiotherapists leading the physiotherapy at the events were required to have experience of working with gymnastics / covering gymnastics competitions as well as advanced trauma management certificate (or equivalent) before they were selected and had to be happy to have others shadow. The invitation to shadow and gain experience was open to any qualified or student physiotherapist.

Competitions days varied over the year in terms of numbers of shadowing physiotherapists. The event physiotherapist covered the duration of the competition (which were sometimes 10 hour days, paid) but those shadowing (unpaid) often split the day so that there weren't too many people on the competition floor at one time. In gymnastics we kept the shadowing numbers to 2 at any one time. During these events exposure was given to venue recee, medical emergency procedures, as well as responding to field of play injuries, acute injury management, onward referral If required and note keeping at a competition. 23 days over the competition calendar were covered using PISA.

Wales Touch Rugby
Wales touch rugby requested cover at the European touch tournament in Nottingham, UK. This competition ran over 4 days with teams having to play 2 or 3 matches per day at their peak. Wales had entered a number of teams across the divisions and so there were athletes across a wide age range (16 - 50+), both male and female. In order to expose those physiotherapists with less experience, as well as students, to the work that goes into planning and preparation for an event recruitment for the event happened approximately 6 months before. The team that were selected consisted of 3 experienced physiotherapists, 1 junior physiotherapist and 4 students. During the planning and preparation all physiotherapists were involved in calculating what and how much consumables were required, number of plinths and logistics of transporting this to the event, etc.

At the event, again exposure was given to things like communication and how this would work from the various pitches, where was the collection point for ice, what was the process if there was a medical emergency either on the field of play or at the team tent. The qualified physiotherapists treated any athletes that required treatment and management of an injury and the students observed. As all the students had a massage qualification, they were able to help with soft tissue recovery independently. The work was carried out in an open plan environment which allowed lots of discussion and sharing of ideas even across the qualified staff. The student and more junior physiotherapist fed back afterwards that this had been great to see. Working in an event like this provided exposure to team work, communication, working under pressure, dealing with upset athletes, dealing with coaches who wanted to know if their athletes were fit to play as well as providing advice for onward management of injuries.

Summary
Sian Knott, ACPSEM
The scheme offers unique opportunities to both students and early career sports physiotherapists, while also providing opportunities for more experienced sports physiotherapist to mentor and supervise others in the sporting context. It does however take time and energy to contact and have conversations to create these opportunities but it is a unique way to feedback into the system and help develop the next generation of Sports Physiotherapists.
IFSPT COMMITTEE NOTES

MEMBERSHIP
The membership committee has been working to evaluate current membership benefits. The committee also wishes to learn what Member Organizations desire to help them and their members achieve excellence in sports physical therapy.

To this end, the membership committee has developed a survey which will be sent to each IFSPT Membership Organization delegate to complete and return. The committee will then gather the response information, evaluate, make recommendations to the board, then share with the entire IFSPT membership.

The membership committee is chaired by John Fitzgerald. If you have any input on this topic, please contact him at this link.

Your feedback is important!

FOURTH WORLD CONGRESS OF SPORTS PHYSICAL THERAPY: NYBORG, DENMARK 2021!

WEBSITE LIVE IN AUGUST!
WCPT NEWS
We are World Physiotherapy.

We have launched our new brand and website.

This exciting announcement is the result of months of planning and hard work. The proposed name change was raised during the general meeting in Geneva in May 2019, when we highlighted a number of reasons why it was important to consider a name change. Following this and a subsequent survey of our member organisations, the board endorsed the proposal to change the name to World Physiotherapy for all externally-facing materials. We will continue to use World Confederation for Physical Therapy for all legal and governance matters.
Along with the rebrand, the website has been completely redeveloped under the new domain name  www.world.physio. All content on the site is fully searchable and has been set out in a user-friendly format.

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION JULY 30!

COVID-19 added to abstract submission topic list
The congress programme committee has added COVID-19 to the abstract submission topic list.

Shane Patman, chair of the congress programme committee, said the committee wanted to make sure physiotherapists' experience of being involved in the response to COVID-19 was reflected in the content of  next year's congress #WorldPhysio2021.

Watch Shane talk about the addition of #COVID19 to the list of abstract topics and the process for submitting an abstract>

Abstract submission deadline: 30 July

COVID-19
With the fast evolving global situation created by the spread of COVID-19, we are aware that many of you have been impacted by the pandemic and the uncertainty it has created. WCPT and the congress programme committee will continue to monitor the situation relating to COVID-19, but for now planning is proceeding for an exciting WCPT congress in Dubai next April and we will advise you if there are any changes likely to impact the event.

WCPT is supporting its member organisations and their members with information and resources, in a number of languages, about COVID-19: www.wcpt.org/news/Novel-Coronavirus-2019-nCoV

Call for abstracts opens
The call for abstracts for poster and platform presentations is now open. The deadline is 30 July.

The WCPT congress offers you a unique opportunity to present to a global audience at the profession's largest international meeting. Whether you have been working on a research project or have an innovative service, practice, resource or theory to share, WCPT is encouraging physiotherapists from all over the world, at every level of the profession, to submit their abstracts.

Abstracts are invited that:
  • report on the latest research with original scientific data
  • address new and unique developments in practice, theory, education, management, policy and resources
  • describe innovative ways in which established methods have been adapted to meet the changing needs of practice

Resources for abstract submitters
If you have limited experience of abstract submissions, presenting at a WCPT congress or if English is not your first language, we have put together several tools to help you.

Selection criteria
Submitted abstracts will go through a blind peer-review process carried out by international reviewers.

The following principles will be used to review abstracts.
  • Does the report address a "significant" or "important" issue?
  • Do the methods/approach enable the question to be answered rigorously?
  • Have the data/findings been interpreted appropriately?
  • Are the contents of the abstract clear and logical?

Registration
Registration is now open.

Focused symposia announced
Key speakers and sessions have been announced for congress.

The congress programme includes 12 confirmed focused symposia featuring 55 speakers from around the world. Focused symposia are core sessions where cutting edge relevant topics will be explored from an international and diverse perspective. High profile speakers will create insightful and engaging learning experiences that ultimately inform, inspire, involve and empower delegates.

"Focused symposia are a great opportunity to hear from world-renowned speakers that are experts in their area and gain a unique global understanding and insight into a particular field" said Shane Patman, chair of WCPT's congress programme committee.

UPCOMING CONGRESSES

In the context of COVID-19 and recent developments, the Belgian Federation of Sports Physiotherapy has decided to postpone the BFSP Congress 1st National Congress on Sports Physiotherapy to Saturday, 21 November 2020.

This decision was made based on the advice of the competent authorities and the measures that apply within the universities.

As the COVID-19 is quickly spreading around the world, our number one concern is the health and safety of delegates, speakers, exhibitors and staff.

Registrations will be transferred to the conference in November.

We are very grateful for the support of our exhibitors and participants so far and we hope to welcome you to Brussels on 21 November for the 1st National Congress on Sports Physiotherapy.

With kind regards,
The BFSP board
