Here's how local businesses are coping

We asked our members how they are doing these days, when many of us have had to change how we conduct business. If you’d like to be featured in our Member Spotlight and share some of your ideas and coping strategies, please take this short survey. Then we will share them with our newsletter readers and social media followers.

We've received some great answers! Here are 27 in recent weeks and one more this week (below):
Rebecca Adams, Admired In Harbor:

"While my job might be officially deemed non-essential, our clients really made us feel that we are essential, and they are essential to us."
What have you had to do differently since the pandemic began?
Previously, we have always followed the guidelines set forth by the state of Michigan for our cosmetology establishment license. Since the pandemic we’ve added additional requirements and precautions set forth by the governor’s orders. We are a safe environment to visit and receive services.

What has worked?
So far everything that was required has worked well. We all have come together and we are so grateful to be back at work. Our clients are so grateful to be getting services, and everyone has been kind, generous and positive.

What has NOT worked?
There are things that have taken a little longer to get used to, but all in all we are able to do our jobs and give a quality service and make our clients happy.

What is the most important thing you have learned in the past few months?
While my job might be officially deemed non-essential, our clients really made us feel that we are essential, and they are essential to us.
Anything else to share?
Admired In Harbor is taking new clients for massage, nails and hair. You can reach us at 231-242-4884 to make an appointment. We look forward to hearing from you!

26th Annual Taste of Harbor postponed until 2021
It is with deep regret that the Harbor Springs Chamber of Commerce and event organizers Mary Ellen Hughes and Jenny Brower have decided to postpone the Taste of Harbor Springs until 2021. The Taste raises funds for culinary scholarships for area students and also supports the Harbor Springs Chamber, which hosts and assists with the event. “It’s a real bummer,” Mary Ellen Hughes commented, “but we’ll just have to look forward to next year – so save this date, Sept. 18, 2020, for the 26th Annual Taste of Harbor Springs. Until then – everyone stay safe and please support our local restaurants.”

Campaign underway to ensure Northwest Michigan communities are counted in last month of Census
A campaign is underway in Northwest Lower Michigan in response to a new Census response deadline slated for September 30. Getting an accurate count is challenging under usual circumstances but it is even more difficult during all the disruptions related to COVID-19. The Northwest Counts campaign focuses on boosting responses in the parts of the region with the lowest Census response rates.
The ads will drive traffic to a new web page, NorthwestCounts.com, that will help make responding to the Census easy. The campaign is being coordinated by Networks Northwest, which is serving as the regional Census Hub Administrator for the statewide Be Counted Census 2020 Campaign.

A complete and accurate count is vital for communities and it is important for everyone to fill out the Census including permanent and seasonal residents, renters, college students, and immigrants. Census data is used to distribute funding for road repairs, school improvements, and social programs.

> Master Plan Survey #1: Natural Character of Harbor Springs
A primary goal of the City of Harbor Springs elected and appointed officials is to incorporate the values and priorities of City residents in the administration of City government. The Master Plan is an important tool toward that end. It is the document that guides all future land use decisions for the next twenty years, or more. To that end, the City has created a series of surveys that gauges the community’s thoughts on several Master Plan goals. Survey #1 is related to the current Master Plan’s Goal #1: “The City of Harbor Springs will retain its distinctive natural character defined by its waterfront setting, substantial bluffs and hillsides, and views of Little Traverse Bay.”

St. Vincent de Paul Walk/Run fundraiser is Saturday at Zorn Park

The Society of St Vincent de Paul (SVdP) will hold its 5th local Walk/Run for the Poor at 8:30 a.m. Saturday September 19th at Zorn Park in Harbor Springs. This is one of the society’s major fundraising events of the year, and they encourage those who can to participate in the walk and donate to help those in need. In these extraordinary times many have found themselves asking for assistance for the first time in their life.

The Society of St Vincent de Paul is an international volunteer organization founded in 1833. Its members are dedicated to personal service of the poor, and for 175 years the Society of St. Vincent de Paul has provided individual services to the most vulnerable in communities throughout the United States. No work of charity is foreign to the organization.
This is a COVID-19 safe event as the walk is held outdoors and it is easy to social distance from other participants. You can
get friends to sponsor your walk and increase the effect of your participation.

> For more information contact the Holy Childhood of Jesus office (231-526-2017) or click here for walker registration form, pledge form, and event map. Checks can be made out to Saint Vincent de Paul and delivered or mailed to 150 W Main St. Harbor Springs, MI 49740.
North Central Michigan College supports Michigan's free-tuition program for front line workers
North Central Michigan College has announced it will serve as a Frontliners Champion to support the Futures for Frontliners program unveiled last week by Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
“We believe strongly that those who maintained critical infrastructure during the state shutdown this past spring are heroes and deserve our thanks,” Dr. David Roland Finley, president of North Central declared.
“Providing frontline workers who’ve yet to earn a college degree access to tuition-free community college – to pursue their dreams – is a wonderful way to say ‘thank you.’ They certainly earned it.
As a Frontline Champion, North Central Michigan College has committed to making sure area employees know about this exceptional opportunity.
Futures for Frontliners offers Michiganders who worked in essential industries during the April 1-June 30 period, but do not have a college degree, free tuition to their local community college to pursue an associate degree or a skills certificate on a full-time or part-time basis while they continue to work.
Those without a high school diploma or equivalency may also participate. These individuals are eligible for services to help them prepare for and complete this credential and go on to a community college or job training program. The application period runs through December 31 of this year with enrollment available beginning in January of 2021.

Hear success stories from other businesses that can be applied to your own business, and then commit to a written action plan to capitalize on opportunities that will improve the future of our own lives and the lives of our colleagues, friends, and family.
