Members of the President’s Circle are cordially invited to an exclusive IAIA President’s Circle Event: Reflections with Dr. Martin (Cherokee). President’s Circle members receive an inside look into happenings at IAIA including commencement, renovations for our one-of-a-kind research center, and our new Studio Arts MFA program. They’ll receive a behind-the-scenes look into Kathleen Wall's (Jemez Pueblo) ceramics studio at IAIA. Kathleen Wall, two-time IAIA alumna and 2020-2021 Native Living Treasure, is our spring Artist in Residence and featured artist for the 2021 Virtual Scholarship Event & Auction. Circle members will be the first to see the pieces she has created for this year’s auction and hear her story behind the art.
The event takes place virtually, on Monday, May 10th at 5:30 pm MDT.

The President’s Circle is comprised of donors whose individual annual support is $1,000 or more. Annual gifts from contributors in the President’s Circle help to fund the most urgent priorities established by the President and Board of Trustees. Achieving climate security is the largest challenge that humanity faces.
Promoting indigenous perspectives on sustainability needs to be an important part of our work. Here’s how the Karuk Tribe describes it: “Indigenous people are disproportionately impacted by the changing climate. While (it) poses serious threats for Karuk culture, sovereignty, and all life on earth, it is perhaps most productively viewed as an opportunity to assert and expand Karuk traditional practices, tribal management authority, sovereignty, and culture. Karuk people have long been part of the ecosystem. Climate adaptation is about restoring human responsibilities and appropriate relationships to the natural world, (using) a combination of western science and Karuk traditional ecological knowledge.”

IAIA President Dr. Robert Martin (Cherokee) hosted another in a series of Town Hall meetings on April 21st. Items discussed included: the COVID-19 vaccine (over 88% of the Faculty/Staff had already received shots), campus reopening, summer classes (almost 5-times more offerings than last year), in-person classes, the Summer Bridge program, campus upgrade projects, student housing, programs at the museum, and a
Jeff Kahm Memorial Scholarship.

"Walk to Graduation"
“Walk to Graduation” is a fundraising initiative for the Alumni Association and the Alumni Council to help raise funding for the IAIA Alumni Scholarship. In celebrating the Class of 2021 and their unbelievable resilience in achieving their degree through a global pandemic, we understand how scholarships are essential to help our indigenous students to be successful in their higher learning. “Walk to Graduation” is a fundraising initiative that will run through May in celebration of our graduates. Because we know how essential scholarships are for our students, we want to pay it forward for our future IAIA Alumni. During this fundraiser, you will have opportunities to create your own Fundraising page, recruit team members to compete with other teams or individuals, and show your progress through your social media accounts. Have fun as we help grow the alumni scholarship. Please join me as we “Walk to Graduation.”

IAIA Trustee Lawrence Roberts Named
Interior Department Chief of Staff
|

Lawrence Roberts, who headed the Interior’s Bureau of Indian Affairs at the end of the Obama administration, will take over as the new Chief of Staff, according to a White House spokesperson.
Roberts, a member of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin, previously worked at the Department of Justice and the Environmental Protection Agency. He most recently was special counsel at the law firm Jenner & Block, and a professor of practice and executive director of the Indian Gaming and Tribal Self-Governance Program at Arizona State University’s Law School.

Suzette Sherman Named Interim Director of Institutional Advancement
Dear IAIA Community,
I am pleased to announce that Suzette Sherman has joined IAIA as the Interim Director of Institutional Advancement. Suzette brings to this role extensive management experience in fundraising, membership, marketing, business development, and guest services for nonprofit cultural organizations and museums – including 18 years in leadership roles. She has a track record of building collaborative teams, high-performance business models, and multi-channel marketing campaigns that generate significant revenue and patron loyalty.
Suzette has held several leadership roles for museums including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, National Museum of Women in the Arts, and Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. In 2018, she joined the Museum of New Mexico Foundation as Director of Leadership Giving to lead all development activities for the Museum of Art, including major-gift fundraising, donor relations, sponsorships, grants, planned giving, and high-profile stewardship events (i.e., a Governor’s exhibition reception at the museum). She led the Centennial Campaign to build the Vladem Contemporary, raising the last $4 million in 17 months to successfully complete the $12.5 million initiative and increase the campaign donor base by over 400%.

MoCNA Reopened to the Public!
The IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts (MoCNA) is open to the public at a limited capacity as per the Governor’s approval.
The Museum is open Monday and Wednesdays through Sundays, 11:00 am - 4:00 pm at 50% capacity (maximum 50 individuals at any given time).
Starting Wednesday, April 7, 2021, the Museum will be open Monday and Wednesday through Saturday from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm, and on Sundays, 11:00 am– 4:00 pm.
The Museum remains closed on Tuesdays.

Please self assess your health before visiting the museum. If you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, please delay your visit to another time.
Face coverings and social distancing will be required while in the museum.

Co-curated by Joseph Maldonado (Ottawa/Chippewa) and Ethan Swearengin (Cherokee Nation), the 2020/2021 IAIA Senior Exhibition highlights artwork that reflects the diverse backgrounds of this year's graduating BFA students. The juried show presents the bold and unique voices of emerging artists that share common concerns -- such as issues of cultural and gender identity, discrimination, and the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic. Some works refer to artists's personal experiences and their relationship to the natural world, others explore themes in urban spaces or focus on the experimentation with materials and forms. Peter Romero Leaves IAIA
After almost 3 ½ years at IAIA, Peter Romero has resigned from his position as Facilities Director to pursue a new opportunity. Peter’s last day was April 22, 2021.
During his tenure at IAIA, Peter oversaw the completion of numerous capital projects, which have enhanced our campus and improved learning spaces for students. Additionally, he played a key role in IAIA’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, by ensuring that the college’s facilities were clean, safe, and well-marked. The approach that Peter took to his work always placed student needs and safety above all else and I have appreciated that greatly.
Please join me in thanking Peter for his service to IAIA and wishing him all the best in his next endeavor.
The search for a new Facilities Director has already begun. Phil Cooney will serve as the Interim Director, until the position is filled.

Scholarships. Needed by more than 80% of our students to help pursue their studies at IAIA.
Academic Programs. IAIA needs support for visiting artists, student interns, artists in residence and innovative equipment to keep IAIA at the forefront of educational offerings.
Student Emergency Fund. The fund provides crucial assistance when a student has a sudden emergency with no available resources or funds.

Welcome Adrianna Tso to the admissions team. Adrianna is our new Admissions Counselor and is Diné (Navajo) from Window Rock, AZ. She received her undergraduate degree from Fort Lewis College in Business Administration. Adrianna has experience in working with student organizations and provided undergraduate admissions tours. Her recent work was with the Yee Ha’ólníi Doo DBA Navajo & Hopi Families COVID Relief Fund providing support and resources for Navajo and Hope families during the pandemic.
