Our first Monday #MYSERVICESTORY for the spring comes from Christopher Downey, a sophomore History and AYA Education major from Pittsford, NY!
At which service sites / community partners have you served or been a student liaison?
I have served at Griot Village Tutoring, Carroll Reads at St. Francis, Tutoring at St. Martin de Porres, and Mayfield Village Games Night.
"My first exposure to CSSA was tutoring at Griot Village for service-learning as part of a theology class. At Griot, each volunteer got paired with a student for the majority of the ten weeks of service, and I was with a girl named Dinah. She was quite shy for most of the semester, but worked really hard on all of her homework, often finishing before the others. Finally, on the last day of service, she started talking more than ever before and mentioned her very successful brother who lived in Houston. She went on and on about how he did really well in college and owned a hundred pairs of shoes, and she proudly looked up to him. She told me she was extremely grateful that I came in every week and helped her with her schoolwork, and that one day, she was going to own a hundred pairs of shoes thanks to me. As an aspiring teacher, this was the first interaction that confirmed my choice of career, and made me want to impact more young students' lives."
