Message from the Mothers' Club President |
Welcome Back, South Families!
On behalf of the Mothers' Club I would like to extend a warm welcome to our new South families, especially to the freshmen class of 2024.
The Mothers' Club is South's Parents' Organization. Although we continue to use the name 'Mothers’ Club', we are a family organization with dads, grandparents, guardians, alumni and staff as active members. For more than 90 years our nonprofit organization has supported Grosse Pointe South and its student body by contributing time, resources and financial assistance to Scholarship, Enrichment, and Preservation programs, as well many school year activities and projects.
Thanks to the generosity of our members and donors last year we were able to:

Award 99 scholarships totaling more than $63,000 to graduating our seniors

Grant over $19,000 to teachers for enrichment projects like field trips, classroom technology and supplies
-
Contribute $16,500 for the new secure vestibule
We are grateful for all the families and donors who were involved in last year’s success and encourage YOU to join the Mothers’ Club. By joining, not only will you be helping to support many projects throughout the year, but also you will receive a student directory and your graduating senior will be eligible to apply for one of our scholarships.
We hope you’ll attend our monthly General Membership Meetings which are held the second Wednesday of each month, at 7pm, either in Cleminson Hall or by a remote meeting link. Our first meeting will Wednesday, October 14th at 7pm. Please check our webpage (www.mothersclubgps.com) or our Facebook Page (@GPSMothersClub) for meeting location. Since our organization is run entirely by volunteers your participation is essential to our mission. Volunteering with the Mothers' Club is a great way to meet other parents, get the inside scoop on what’s happening at South, and most importantly make a positive impact for our school community. While this school year will be unique, our mission to enhance and support the students and teachers at South is as important as ever. With your help, we can make this school year memorable, uphold as many traditions as possible, and find new ways to support our students and teachers.

The Mothers' Club is South's Parent Organization. The group was founded in 1929 to enhance and enrich the student experience at Grosse Pointe South High School.
The Mothers' Club uses all funds raised to invest in the past, present, and future of South. Funds are divided into the following categories:

Past: Preservation of the historic building and grounds.

Present: Enriching the classroom experience.
-
Future: Scholarship awards to graduating seniors.
In addition to our three funding areas, the Mothers' Club also:
- Produces a monthly newsletter called the High Pointes. The August-September newsletter is mailed to each South student household and future monthly newsletters are delivered via email and maintained on the webpage.
- Produces the South Student-Parent Directory.
- Manages and staffs the School Store.
- Maintains the Mothers' Club website, Facebook page, and Twitter account to keep families informed about what's happening at South.
- Supports and chaperones various dances, events, and the All Night Party for graduating seniors.

Mothers' Club has partnered with Albatross so we can continue to make spirit wear available to students and parents. Albatross will donate a portion of ALL South spirit wear sales back to the Mothers' Club.

Annual Development Campaign |
Thank you so much to our generous 2020 Annual Campaign donors who contributed over $9,000 to support South's students and community and reinforce our shared commitment to educational excellence.
Funds raised through the Annual Campaign, along with membership dues, revenue from the School Store and events, and other donations, will fund scholarships for South seniors, enrichment of South classrooms and organizations, and preservation of South's historic building.
During this unprecedented time for the South community and the greater world, donations make a tremendous impact as fundraising efforts through events and the School Store have been paused. How do I request a schedule change?
The following are eligible reasons or a schedule change:
- Scheduling error
- Lack of prerequisite class/grade requirements
- Moving to a more challenging course level
- Failure to complete a course in the spring semester or in summer school which
would make the student ineligible for a chosen course
- A transcript for a new student indicates a schedule change is necessary
Requests for any other reason, including those based on extenuating circumstances will be reviewed and must be approved by administration. You may complete this form to request a change.
Strange Days, Indeed!
These days are weird, stressful and above all one of the most dreaded words of 2020: UNPRECEDENTED. I know that’s on my list of words to throw out the window forever, but for now it keeps ringing true. Never has there been a more important time to build and sustain relationships to support us socially, emotionally and academically! Teachers will be focusing on this as they start their classes and work to build community virtually.
Counselors will also work to buid and sustain emotional support with our families. Expect that we will be reaching out to all of our students regularly throughout the year to check-in on them and following up individually with concerns and challenges. However, if you see that your student is struggling please connect with us. We want to help. Counselors will follow up with parents as well with recommendations on successful remote learning. Remember the lesson of the airplane safety and put on your mask before assisting your children. We all must build in good self-care and healthy habits to model positive life balance for our children.
SENIOR PARENTS:
Counselors invite all Seniors and Parents to meet via Zoom on Thursday, September 11th to review the college application process. We will send out a link to the Zoom presentation when school begins. During this important information session we will cover the following topics:
- Using Naviance for the College Application Process
- Timetable for college preparation
- The College Application Process
- Important dates for College Night and Financial Aid Night
- The Letter of Recommendation process
- Important testing dates for Senior year
- How to Request an official High School Transcript
- Early Decision and Early Action possibilities
- How to share important information for counselor Letters of Recommendation
We will record this meeting so it can easily be referenced online at the counseling center website. Counselors will begin processing college application/transcript requests after this meeting.
An important message on college application timing.
October 15: This date is the earliest deadline colleges may require first-year
candidates to submit an application for fall admission. Members must give
equal consideration to all applications received by that date.
This means that there is no advantage given to students who apply before October 15. When college advisors suggest that you “apply early” to a school for your best chance that date is by October 15th. We strongly encourage applications for seniors who intend to apply to the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) or Michigan State University by November 1st to meet the Early Action deadline of November 15th.
Due to COVID we do not anticipate opportunities for standardized testing (ACT or SAT). I know parents have had as many as six dates scheduled that have been canceled. There are no indications currently that this will change in the foreseeable future. Consequently, almost all schools are test-optional for admissions purposes.

JUNIOR PARENTS: Thursday, September 18th counselors provide the opportunity for fall junior meeting via Zoom. We will send out a link to the presentation at the start of the year. At the meeting, we will provide information about making the most of this important high school year. This will include understanding the impact of grades and test scores, standardized testing in the junior year, college night, post-high school planning, and more. We will record and post this meeting on the counseling webpage the following day.
Again, due to COVID we do not anticipate the PSAT will be given at South this fall. Like most things these days, the NMSQT/PSAT will be a situation that becomes clearer as time. If students are interested in preparing for the PSAT or SAT a fantastic and FREE resource is on Khan Academy (www.khanacademy.org). They are the only test-prep partner of the College Board so they will have the very latest in SAT test preparation. The best part is that it is all free.
FRESHMAN PARENTS
