PTA Highlights
Dear Riverside Parents,

This week has been busy for parents and students and we thank you for supporting us in a variety of PTA programs and events!

On Monday we held our annual Veterans Day Celebration. It was great to see so many families and Veterans in attendance.  We enjoyed hearing from local elected officials, recognizing Veterans in attendance, viewing a video honoring Veterans who are relatives of Riverside students, laying of the wreath by the Color Guards, listening to Taps led by Douglas Chew and student Trumpet players, and singing by the Riverside Chorus and the Women's Chorus.

We also enjoyed seeing many of you on Tuesday at our Fall PTA Meeting with our guest speaker Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jones who answered many questions from parents and educated us on her work so far in the district.

Today is America's Recycles Day and our PTA Green Committee will be educating students during lunch time about waste free lunch and the importance of recycling.  Earlier this week, the Green team also hosted our annual boot swap in an effort to recycle boots from year to year.

This afternoon at 3:15pm we will be hosting our " Holiday's for Haiti" Community Service Event in the Riverside School gym.  We hope to see many families there to join us in supporting Danita's Children in Haiti.

After a busy week we hope all of you enjoyed your weekends!

AMERICA RECYCLES DAY TODAY
Green Committee members were in the cafeteria today to celebrate America Recycles Day with the students! The importance of recycling and sorting procedures were refreshed, a short video was shown and interactive recycling games were played and enjoyed by all. Please continue to recycle at home and strive to reduce the amount waste we produce by packing lunch and snack in reusable containers whenever possible! Recycling information and helpful tips can be found on the  PTA Green Schools site.
TREX CHALLENGE!
Did you know that plastic bags, wraps and film are not accepted in your recycling bin at home? These items CAN however be recycled at participating grocery stores and now conveniently at Riverside! Riverside will be competing in the TREX "Plastic Film Collection" Challenge against other elementary schools in the Northeast. The challenge kicks off on America Recycles Day (November 15) and winners are announced on Earth Day (April 22).

We are collecting clean and dry produce, newspaper and dry cleaning bags, case and bubble wrap and other accepted items in the collection bin at the entrance of school and will encourage students to recycle these items in the cafeteria too! Each month, the plastic collected will be weighed and recorded, and then sent to Trex to become composite decking. See the PTA Green Schools site for a list of accepted materials and Trex challenge details.  Please help the environment and Riverside School by dropping off your plastic bags and film!
TRADING CANDY FOR A CHILD'S SMILE
The Wellness Committee would like to thank all Riverside School families and children who donated unwanted Halloween candy. We collected  406 L BS !!!  Local pediatric dentist, Dr. Stacy Zarakiotis, is matching $2 for every pound of candy collected and will in turn be donating $812 to   Operation Smile.  Because of our school's enormous donation, we will fund 3 life changing pediatric cleft lip surgeries for children in need!
SIGN UP FOR SAFETY DUTY

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE IN GREENWICH: HELPING PARENTS BE PARTNERS IN LEARNING
kids_reading_book.jpg
The Academic Excellence Committee of the PTA Council is working with GPS to give every parent the information and guidance they need to help their kids thrive at school.

This year, the committee is hosting six workshops open to the public to inform the parent about the philosophy and process of creating our curriculum and what changes are being made. This information is geared to help parents understand the curriculum so they can better support the work teachers are doing in the classroom. Presentations are given by GPS administrators. There have been two workshops to date:
1.  The Vision of the Graduate
2.  Parents as Partners in Learning: Teaching & Learning  and view Irene Parisi's Presentation.

Our next workshop - Personalized Learning and Purposeful Screentime (TENTATIVE TOPIC) - is scheduled for November 19th at 10:30am at the Board of Education Building. All Workshops are open to the public.

If you have questions, suggestions, concerns or want to know more, please contact Caitlin Wardell, Riverside School's Academic Excellence rep, at  [email protected] .
