We opened the second nine-week quarter on a positive start and will close out another calendar month later this week. We have included a few images in this week's update from Unity Day '19 and I would like to thank all the students and staff that participated. Both LNMS and OCPS are very much dedicated to a positive learning environment for all of our students which means inclusion and acceptance of everyone. Unity Day was a reminder of that.
In this week's calendar we have listed several upcoming Spirit Day events - all of which support our amazing PTSA. One of these is scheduled for Thursday (runs 4-10 pm) at PDQ. If you are out and about and considering grabbing a bite to eat, please stop by PDQ as a percentage of those receipts when LNMS is mentioned get donated back to the PTSA. Our PTSA provides a great deal of support and anything the community can do to help them is deeply appreciated.

OCPS parents, due to some vendor network issues experienced by Orange County Public Schools on Monday report cards will be delayed by one day. Report cards will now be distributed to parents on Tuesday, October 29th instead of Monday, October 28th. Report cards will also appear in Skyward Family Access on Tuesday. Thank you for your support of Orange County Public Schools.

Knight Academics - "Rigor in the Classroom"
|
On Wednesday, October 23rd Peter Phelan, Research Laboratory Manager from Nemours Children's Hospital, and Jeanne Brooks conducted their monthly visit to our 6th grade students in PLTW (Project Lead the Way). They brought examples on how nanotechnology is used in the medical field. They included 3D printed models of organs and educated our kids on how those are used to design the action plan of a surgery. The students were also excited to see what they will cover during their next visit!

Stranger Things Knight Dance & Dinner
|
The HERO program is once again up and running at LNMS. Students earn HERO points for
positive behaviors such as being on time to class, having a charged device, random acts of kindness, and attending school events. Deductions can also occur for tardies and other violations of school policies. This year, LNMS has implemented a store, dubbed "Knight Prime!" Students can cash in their points in exchange for a variety of items - click here.
The Knight Prime catalog is now available for viewing on the 2019-2020 Student Body Course in Canvas. Additionally, it is located on the Parent page of the LNMS website. Students can view the catalog and decide if they want to spend their points for smaller items, or save up for larger items down the road. Once students decide, there is an order form where they will select the item. Each Tuesday and Thursday orders will be fulfilled and delivered to students at lunchtime. Points will be deducted for the selected items.

Volleyball season kicked off this past Wednesday at home versus Innovation!
We had a packed house in the Kingdom as our teams took the court. Our ladies got off to a rough start with Innovation taking the lead early with a score of 6-1. Coach Vazquez composed his team and they made a comeback! The first set was back and forth, but unfortunately Innovation ended up taking the first set. The second set had Lake Nona written all over it and our ladies won it 18-25. They took that momentum and gained a lead during the last set, but were unable to hold it and the Phoenixes ended up defeating our Lady Knights in the third set.
Our boys team got off to a great start as returner and Team Captain Antonio Medina had multiple serves that Innovation could not seem to convert on. However, once the Phoenixes were able to get the ball in play, they kept that momentum for the rest of the night defeating our Knights in just 2 sets.
It was a tough start for Lake Nona volleyball, but we are sure our teams will bounce back next week! We play at Meadow Woods on Monday starting at 5:30pm and Hunter's Creek on Wednesday starting at 5pm. Thank you to all of the fans that came out to support our Knights in their season opener! It was a fun crowd and we are looking forward to a terrific season!

Knight Rigor Outside of the Classroom - Art Students
|
Ms. Guyton was awarded a grant to take students to the Architects of Air's luminaria, an interactive exhibit at Seneff Plaza (Doctor Phillips Center). Students visited the DODECALIS, a sculpture people enter to be immersed in light and color. The DODECALIS is a luminarium and is inspired by the beauty of natural geometry and by Islamic architecture. It features winding passages of small domes inspired by repetitious forms found in the bazaars of Iran. The luminosity of light and color inside is created purely by the light shining through the colored plastic. All the individual pieces have been cut and glued together by hand in a workshop in Nottingham, England.

Community footnote: The Northwestern University Wildcats (Evanston, IL) 34-game losing streak is the longest in Division I college football history. During the team's winless 1981 season, the Wildcats were outscored 505-82 - an average of 40 points per game. What many do not know is that Northwestern University is consistently listed among the Top 10 U.S. colleges by any ranking service year after year. During this record losing streak at home football games their students would hold up signs in the stands with this simple message:
"That's okay, y'all be working for us one day."
