Deputies Recovering From Cowardly Ambush in Compton
September 12: Two LASD deputies are recovering from a horrific, cowardly ambush that occurred in Compton on Saturday. Both were in a patrol vehicle outside a Metro Blue Line station when a gunman approached the passenger side and fired repeatedly at close range before sprinting away. The suspect remains at large. One deputy was shot in the jaw and arms and the other was shot in the forehead, arm and hand. The fact that both deputies were able to exit the vehicle on their own following the ambush is a testament to their strength, courage and will to survive. Dispatchers Become First Responders Under New Law
September 15: On Tuesday, PPOA was pleased to report in an email to Unit 621 members that Assembly Bill 1945 (AB 1945), which recognizes the heroic work of public safety dispatchers by defining them as first responders, was officially signed into law by Governor Newsom last week after passing the legislature with unanimous, bipartisan support.

Currently, the Federal government describes dispatchers as an "administrative" or "clerical" occupation. Unfortunately, that definition does not accurately describe the work of dispatchers who undergo extensive training and whose work can mean the difference between life and death.

The timing is particularly helpful to Law Enforcement Technicians, said PPOA Vice President Jim Blankenship. "The passage of the bill is beneficial to LETs as we move forward with the ongoing LET Class Study," he said. "The LA County CEO Classification Division is in the midst of conducting a review of the staffing and classification, standards and duties of LETs. This legislation should greatly assist PPOA members as we work to convince the County to properly recognize the contributions of Law Enforcement Technicians."

Blankenship added: "This new law also delivers a level of respect that is long overdue for Public Response Dispatchers as well as their partner 911 operators."

NO on Measure J:
Protect Essential Workers
The No on Measure J — Protect Essential Workers coalition is a group of more than 800,000 workers who provide essential services throughout Los Angeles County. These include firefighters, medics, 911 operators, nurses, social workers, public safety personnel, educators, and more. The No-on-Measure-J coalition actively support efforts to fix racial and gender inequity. In fact, the coalition leadership reflects the broad diversity of the members of our organizations. We all want more people in Los Angeles to succeed, but Measure J will harm the very people it purports to help. In fact, it permanently diverts nearly $500,000,000.00 away from essential county services. Please be sure to tell all L.A. County residents you know to vote NO on Measure in November.
