Reduced Cost Ethics Training for Professional Engineers
To help our members meet their requirements, the New Jersey Society of Professional Engineers has launched a new online ethics training for professional engineers at a reduced cost.
This two-hour online video, presented by the NJSPE counsel Larry Powers, will provide you with the two credits required for the ethics portion of your professional engineer license. Once the video is viewed in its entirety, you will be e-mailed a certificate proving you have met this licensing requirement.

MATHCOUNTS
Each year, the NJSPE's Education Foundation sponsors the NJ MATHCOUNTS events
throughout the state. The Competition Series is for middle school students grades 6 - 8. It
consists of school competitions with the winners moving on to regional and then state
competitions. The national competition was held in Orlando in May.The MATHCOUNTS motto is "Some students love math. Other students fear math. MATHCOUNTS is a place for both." Rural-transportation infrastructure council holds first meeting
The inaugural meeting of the Rural Opportunities to Use Transportation for Economic Success (ROUTES) Council was held this week.
The council will work to improve how the U.S. Department of Transportation's discretionary grant funds are used to support the rural transportation system.
The council is part of the ROUTES Initiative. The initiative will analyze discretionary funding and financing opportunities and will help rural stakeholders understand how to access these opportunities.

Booker, Menendez urge US transportation chief Chao to advance Gateway project funding

Citing a secret visit to the crumbling train tunnels to New York City, New Jersey's two U.S. senators pushed the country's head of transportation to advance funding for repairs and the construction of a new tunnel connecting the Garden State to New York.
Sens. Cory Booker and Bob Menendez, both Democrats, wrote to U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao reiterating the need to fix the tunnels and build a new one, and questioned why there has been a holdup on federal money for the projects.

Gateway: New work begins on Hudson River tunnel project
The Gateway Development Program Corp. partners said Thursday they are advancing engineering and design of the Hudson Tunnel Project with dozens of geotechnical borings that will be conducted along the proposed alignment of the new tunnel that will connect New Jersey with New York City.
Gateway says the exploration, which began in October and is expected to run through early 2020.
'Jury is still out' on P3s for big construction projects
Panelists at a Design-Build Conference & Expo 2019 presentation on public-private partnerships didn't pull any punches about the risks involved with the delivery method that some industry heavyweights have become skeptical of.
"Sometimes when a [public-private partnership] project isn't totally synched up and there's not total harmony between the players, that can result in issues," said Joe Wingerter, v
ice president of project development at Kiewit, adding that some
of the expectations around P3s' ability to deliver a better product more quickly have not yet been proven.

Pipeline Safety Bill Forgets to Prioritize Safety, NSPE President Says
NSPE President David Martini, P.E, F.NSPE, expressed disappointment to Senator Ed Markey (D-MA) about changes to legislation that will jeopardize public safety by allowing engineering licensing exemptions in the pipeline industry to continue.
Martini took issue with Markey's decision to remove a provision from S.1097 that would have required a PE to review and approve all pipeline construction and maintenance documents. The provision was removed from S. 1097 when it was rolled into a larger pipeline safety bill, S. 2299. Congressional staff have said the decision was made to gain bipartisan support for the larger bill.

Middle Schoolers Take On Drinking Water Challenge

As more and more of the world's population faces life with water in short supply, DiscoverE's Future City Competition has presented its 2019-20 competitors with a timely challenge: Identify an urban water system threat and then imagine, research, design, and build a futuristic solution to ensure a reliable supply of clean drinking water.
The Future City Competition, now in its 28th year, is a project-based learning experience for middle schoolers.
Following the theme "Clean Water: Tap Into Tomorrow," 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students from across the country and abroad will work in teams with educators and STEM mentors.

Engineering Futurists

What is the future of the engineering profession? How will technology change engineering practice? If we wanted to design a licensing system from scratch, how would it work?
Some people may shy away from such big questions. A group of engineering-thinkers, however, has created a new forum where these questions are eagerly contemplated as a way to provoke action on the profession's biggest challenges.
Engineering Change Lab-USA, launched in 2017, is the "social change laboratory" where it's all taking place. The organization's summits have become a space for idea exchange, and NSPE members have played a significant role in the ECL-USA summits from the very beginning.
