Community Brief from Endeavor Elementary
"We Rise by Lifting Others"
Wednesday, September 2, 2020

It is with great pleasure that I welcome our students, parents and family members to the 2020-2021 school year! During these unprecedented times, the theme selected for this year of "We Rise by Lifting Others" could not be more fitting.

I want to thank our students, parents and families for their patience and understanding as we hit our stride and find the rhythm of the LaunchED model. Working as a team, I am confident that our children will still receive the quality of education they have come to know from Endeavor Elementary School. While the delivery method may be changed for the moment, we still have very highly qualified educators backed up by a rigorous OCPS curriculum.

In preparation for the new school year, our teachers and staff worked diligently to distribute devices and instructional materials ensuring every student was ready for their first day of learning. Teachers also created their Canvas courses and prepared engaging on-line/virtual lessons. As a result, instruction began on time last month as planned. On the support side, I would like to thank Ms. Conway and the cafeteria staff for having the Grab and Go meals at the ready for our children (highlighted below).

As the new principal of Endeavor Elementary School, I am extremely impressed with the level of commitment to our Navigators demonstrated by their families and teachers alike! I look forward to the full reopening of school at some point and the opportunity of getting to know you in person.

Enjoy your Labor Day weekend and thank you for looking over this latest edition of The Navigator News. We've included a number of highlights from the first couple of weeks of school that I think you will enjoy!

Endeavor continues to prepare for the arrival of our students unveiling our newest mural. Navi, our beloved mascot, is once again prominently featured with his trustee compass as he charts his course to excellence by air. Jon Miller, our resident artist, masterfully captures the spirit of this year's theme of Rise.

To kick off the new school year, Principal Knappins greeted Endeavor's teachers and staff with a theme-filled goodie bag and a welcome back lunch. This kind gesture helped our teachers to get ready for "take off" so that their students can soar to heights in 2020-2021. Thank you Mr. Knappins!

In addition to picking up their devices, students received grade level consumable books to complete paper-pencil assignment at home. Parents expressed their appreciation for the books as it will facilitate the completion of practice activities. Parents and students also had the opportunity to meet our new principal, Mr. Knappins!

High Expectations for Student Learning

It was wonderful to see our Navigators' happy faces as they drove by to pick up their devices and books for this school year. Thank you to all our parents for making sure that our students were set up for success on their first day of digital learning!

Socially distanced in the media center, in their classrooms or at home, teachers are participating in staff development workshops. Ms. Carmenate and Ms. Zupa demonstrated the utility of the blended model of online learning with in-class instruction.

If you look closely, you will see teachers participating remotely on the screen to the back left as well as live in the media center. In this session they were reviewing Professional Learning Community (PLC) goals for ELA and Math

New principal, Mr. Knappins, waited with anticipation to participate in the G.A.T.O.R. House Induction Ceremony. Each House leader shared the importance their House plays in the Endeavor House system. When the time came, Mr. Knappins reached in the ceremonial urn and pulled out a turquoise stone followed by Coach Brands welcoming him into the "Leadership House." Mr. Knappins then signed his name in the ledger committing to support the qualities of the Leadership House of which he is now a proud member!

Principal Knappins pulled out a turquoise stone from the ceremonial urn. Turquoise is the color of Leadership House.
Coach Brands welcomes Mr. Knappins to the Leadership House. Afterwards, he signs the ledger in which he confirms his commitment to the Leadership House's qualities and ideals.
Leadership House's overarching character trait is one of "Taking Responsibility." Mr. Knappins is now a bonafide member of the Leadership House in his first year as principal of Endeavor Elementary!

Advice from the FBI in protecting kids from online dangers:
The internet, for all of its benefits, also gives criminals and predators an easy way to reach young people. The most important advice for parents is to have open and ongoing conversations about safe and appropriate online behavior. FBI advice to consider:
  • Educate yourself about the websites, software, games, and apps that your child uses (see below).
  • Check their social media and gaming profiles and posts. Have conversations about what is appropriate to say or share.
  • Explain to your kids that once images or comments are posted online they can be shared with anyone and never truly disappear.
  • Make sure your kids use privacy settings to restrict access to their online profiles.
  • Tell your children to be extremely wary when communicating with anyone online who they do not know in real life.
  • Encourage kids to choose appropriate screen names and to create strong passwords.
  • Make it a rule with your kids that they can't arrange to meet up with someone they met online without your knowledge and supervision.
  • Stress to your children that making any kind of threat online - even if they think it's a joke - is a crime.
  • Report any inappropriate contact between an adult and your child to law enforcement immediately. Notify the site they were using, too.
