Garland Recovers from EF2 Tornado
Thank you to the numerous City departments, neighborhood groups and businesses, volunteers and residents who have helped those impacted by the EF2 tornado that hit portions of southwest Garland Sunday, Oct. 20. Your actions show the resiliency and strong sense of community in our city. View a video of the tremendous community efforts.

City brush and bulky crews will continue to work the affected area Monday, Oct. 28. Residents are asked to put ONLY recyclable materials in the blue recycle carts. If additional green trash carts are needed, contact Environmental Waste Services at 972-205-3500 or via Garland eAssist and request temporary use of an additional green cart. Be sure to identify yourself as a resident of the storm-impacted area.

Garland Power & Light has restored power to all tornado-affected customers who can safely accept electric service. 

The City of Garland estimates about 175 residential and commercial structures were damaged in Sunday's storms, at least 36 with major damage and five destroyed. Property damage is estimated at $20 million.

Trails and Bikeways Master Plan Open House Events
The City is hosting two open house events as part of a call for input into its Trails and Bikeways Master Plan.

We want to know your priorities for cycling, walking and using trails in Garland. We'll provide a brief presentation and interactive stations on back-to-back nights:
  • 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29, at Audubon Recreation Center, 342 W. Oates Road
  • 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, at Central Library, 625 Austin St.
The same content will be presented at both meetings. Presentations are scheduled for 6:15 p.m. with the open house period continuing until 8 p.m. Call 972-205-2750 for more information about the meeting or the project.
Halloween Safety Tips
The City of Garland wants trick-or-treaters of all ages to have a safe and happy Halloween. 

Taking precautions such as traveling in groups, wearing light-colored costumes and checking candy before it's consumed are great ways to avoid tricks while enjoying the treats of the season.

Join us in Garland's historic Downtown Square for the third annual Día de los Muertos event from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1.
 
This one-of-a-kind event features colorful cultural performances by Los Matachines and various Garland Independent School District and International Leadership of Texas students, ballet folklorico and mariachi performances, a cultural art show, bounce houses, food and craft vendors, and altar displays.

All Libraries Closed Friday, Nov. 1
All Garland libraries will be closed Friday, Nov. 1, for staff development. 

All libraries will reopen Saturday, Nov. 2, and resume their normal hours.

During this closure, w ireless access will remain on at all library buildings.  Online resources are always available to card holders. In addition, card holders will be able to a ccess the library catalog to search and place holds, as well as renew materials through the My Account feature.

Tree Power Free Tree Giveaway 
Garland residents can pick up a free tree Saturday, Nov. 2! 

Trees will be available from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. (or while supplies last) at the Haskell L. Roach Garden Center, 1221 Spring Creek Drive.
 
To receive a tree, simply prove your Garland residency with a valid Texas driver's license or current City utility bill. One tree will be given per household.
 
America Recycles Day
Recycle your old electronics and clothing for free from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Recycling Center, 1426 Commerce St.

Garland ISD elementary and Garland home schools will be participating in the annual Clothing Recycling Competition, with prizes awarded for the most weight in clothing and textiles collected. 

Shredding services will also be offered for free for Garland residents with proof of residency. Shredding is limited to four boxes per family. Find out more.

The Garland Plan Commission meets on the second and fourth Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 200 N. Fifth St. View agendas at GarlandTX.gov and be sure to click the "subscribe" button to receive notifications when meeting agendas are posted. 

Shorehaven Area Neighborhood Roundtable
Oct. 28
Join District 2 Council Member Deborah Morris for a Shorehaven area Neighborhood Roundtable from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 28, at Bradfield Recreation Center, 1146 Castle Drive. We'll discuss localized complaints about crime and parking issues, as well as other neighborhood concerns. Garland Police Chief Jeff Bryan and Code Compliance Director Steve Killen will participate. Light refreshments will be provided.
