COMMITTEES & MINISTRIES
COMMUNITY CHURCH CONCERTS
Community Church Concerts is alive and well and hope you all are, too! We have an exciting season with The Seldom Scene (Oct. 30),The Kruger Brothers (Dec. 4), The Henhouse Prowlers (Jan. 15), and Hank, Pattie, and the Current (Feb. 20) all on board. Normally, this time of year, we'd be premiering our season and opening up ticket sales; but we have no idea when "normal" will happen or what it will look like. As soon as we understand the constraints that will affect our gathering for concerts, we will let you know how we plan to proceed. Stay tuned, and thank you for your patience. Check our website for updates! Questions? Email Terry Baker

ENDOWMENT COMMITTEE
ENDOWMENT FUND GRANT RECOMMENDATIONS
The Endowment Committee received several grant applications for the next fiscal year beginning July 1, 2020. Based on an in-depth review of applications, the Committee is recommending congregational approval for the following:
  • $1500 to help the Immigrant Justice Initiative meet urgent dental needs of our Asylum Seeker
  • $1000 to support the Club Nova Capital Campaign as part of our Mental Health Ministry in our wider community
  • $500 for leader training to expand our OWL Ministry to include older adults
  • AND an additional $3000 to support the Building Program for a total commitment of $10,000
Congregants will be asked to approve these recommendations during the month of June.

ROSS & COLE NOMINATED FOR COMMUNITY CHURCH ENDOWMENT COMMITTEE
Larry Ross, and his wife Debra, have been Members for seven years. Larry served on the advisory finance committee and is now on the Finance Task Force for the Building Project, a Worship Associate, and a member of the Choir. His professional experience included a career in banking, working for a major multi-national bank for 30 years where his last assignment was in Global Wealth Management. Currently, he is President of the Board of Directors of the Chatham County Council on Aging.

Cathy Cole, husband Steve Garfinkel, and daughters joined the church in 2004 - a good fit for eclectic religious backgrounds. Cathy served on the 2007 Ministerial Search Committee, Caring Ministry (2009-2017), and Board of Trustees (2014-2016, President 2015). She joined the Annual Pledge Drive team in 2016, co-chaired it in 2017, and co-chaired the Combined Capital Campaign/Annual Pledge Drive in 2018. Each week, she sells her backyard chickens' eggs to help close the gap in the Capital Campaign funding.
BUILDING PROJECT

THE BUILDING PROJECT STATUS

Many have been pondering the potential implications of the Covid-19 pandemic for the church's construction plans. In April, the Board accepted the Building Task Force recommendations for judiciously proceeding with construction, based on careful assessment of the risks of proceeding versus the risks of delaying. Visit the Building Project webpage linking to the Board's April 15 explanatory letter and also to the March-April Building Blocks Bulletin with more detailed information.
COMMUNITY SERVICE MINISTRY
IFC  FOOD PANTRY As your stay-at-home winds down, any extra non-perishable food that you will likely not use can be donated to the IFC Food Pantry. Their requests have greatly increased and will likely stay higher for many months. You can put the food aside until normal church activities resume and then bring it to the blue canvas bins in the Commons. A quicker way is to take it to Mt. Carmel Church, 2016 Mt. Carmel Church Rd., on Saturdays from 9-11 or 1-3. Drive to the back of the church and a gloved volunteer will unload your car. They will deliver to the IFC or CORA, the Chatham County pantry.
SHARE THE PLATE
The Share the Plate on July 5 will support the national Unitarian Universalists for Social Justice (UUSJ) program, specifically the Write Here Write Now (WHWN) legislative lobby project. As a partner with UUSJ, we are expected to make an annual contribution to assist with its expenses, and for a church of our size, our donation is $500. UUSJ provides information about upcoming legislation relevant to UU principles, and members of our congregation hand write or email letters addressed to our federal representatives. UUSJ personally delivers our letters written to our Congressmen and Senators. We initiated the project in February with letters on immigration, and we have continued the past month with letters about environmental legislation to reduce hydroflourocarbons. Although tabling during the coffee hours is our preferred way of promoting the letter writing, we are continuing by email to send letters to the DC team with whom we collaborate. Support WHWN by writing letters each month. Here is a description.
LEARNING & FELLOWSHIP
RARE WOMEN
As Rare Women, we build relationships in small groups by discussing our lives and the gifts, myths, and challenges of growing older. Our current focus is on staying connected and sharing our lives as we experience the challenges of living during these trying times. Beginning in June, we will be in "summer mode" and will not have programmed topics or specific facilitators. Each group is invited to continue meeting via Zoom throughout the summer and, if desired, to select a discussion leader and topic for each meeting. Group A meets from 2-4 pm on the first Mondays and third Mondays of the month. Group B meets from 10 am-noon every Thursday. Group C meets from 1:30-3:30 pm every Thursday. Newcomers are welcome to join any group. For more information, please see our webpage and our resources page. Join our email list here.
COMMUNITY CLICKERS
Join the Community Clickers for either or both of our twice-monthly meetings. We are going to try meeting in the church's courtyard for our Wednesday 2-4pm meeting on June 3rd (and 7/1). Bring your own chair, wear your mask, and join us for some outdoor sitting, clicking, and chatting (weather permitting). Last minute updates will be sent to our Clickers mailing list. We will meet via Zoom from 7-9 pm on Monday, June 15th (and 7/20). We are working on baby hats for UNC Hospital, shawls for UNC Hospice, items for the church's Fall Auction (October 24th), and scarves for holiday baskets for the residents at Homestart. We use #4 washable acrylic yarns to make 7" x 9" blocks with two 18" tails at opposite corners for our shawls. If you want to create all 18 blocks and make a shawl, here are the instructions. Join our email list here.
OUTDOOR CONNECTIONS
White Pines, 9:00 AM, Sat. June 13
White Pines Nature Preserve is a Triangle Land Conservancy property at the confluence of the Rocky and Deep Rivers, south of Pittsboro. It's big enough and remote enough to make for safe hiking, gorgeous enough to make it worth the trip. We'll rendezvous there and break into groups of 5 or fewer folks. Masks will be assumed, Covid discussions discouraged, natural beauty inescapable. RSVP here.

(Almost) Full Moon Paddle, 7:30 PM, Fri. July 3
We'll rendezvous at the canoe/kayak launch off Fearrington Point (Jordan Lake) to enjoy the sunset and moon rise. A shallow shoreline here makes motorboat mayhem unlikely. If you don't have your own paddle craft, please let us know ASAP so we can check into costs and arrangements. Less predictably than astronomic events, eagles and beavers often add highlights to this trip. RSVP here.

2020 FALL AUCTION

Plans for the 2020 Fall Auction have begun so SAVE THE DATE - Saturday, October 24th! We are currently working on strategies for having an online auction, since it seems unlikely we will be able to gather in person in October. Watch the Weekly Announcements and visit the auction webpage in July to learn when the 2020 catalog opens for donations - but you can start planning your new offers NOW! In the meantime, many thanks to all of the 2019 Fall Auction donors and buyers who have adjusted to the changes that have occurred in how, when, where purchases/dinners/events can be delivered. Questions? Contact the auction chairs, Don and Susan Blanchard
