Action on Smoking & Health (ASH), Western Canada’s leading tobacco control organization, is hosting a free workshop to assist municipalities with the development of local smoking and vaping bylaws. The workshop follows AUMA’s Spring Municipal Leaders’ Caucus and will be held next door to the caucus venue.

Innovative Solutions Canada helps Canadian innovators by funding research and development, and testing prototypes in real-life settings. Some funding opportunities focus on waste management, such as sustainable alternatives to plastics packaging , diverting vehicle plastics from landfills and seeking solutions to textile and microfiber waste . Four of Alberta's major regulators are offering a free noon-hour webinar about municipal permitting on March 11. The province-wide webinar is titled Compliance: Practice Perspectives in Alberta's Building, Design and Construction Industry . Senior officials from Alberta Association of Architects, Alberta Municipal Affairs, the City of Calgary and the City of Edmonton will all make mini-presentations and solicit questions .

The Elected Officials Education Program is offering Council’s Role in Land Use and Development Approvals on Tuesday, March 24 at the AUMA office in Edmonton, to make it easy for those who are coming to town for Spring Municipal Leaders Caucus to attend.

The course provides participants an understanding of:
  • the provincial-municipal relationship in planning;
  • the roles of council, administration and the public;
  • statutory and non-statutory plans; and
  • the land application process, including re-designation and subdivision of land, development approvals, appeals and disputes.
