Cat Friendly Home
Choosing the right textiles

Cuddling with your cat is one of life's greatest joys but clawing and shedding can be destructive to upholstered pieces. Natural fibers can be an option for those who prefer a traditional look while new materials offer pet owners a great variety of choices. The bottom line is that you want something that looks great and can endure life with a pet.

Best Bets: Natural Fibers

Cotton Velvet: You may be surprised by this selection, but a good quality cotton velvet can go a long way to resisting cat hair and with the proper stain treatment, should repel the occasional kitty accident. Good quality cotton velvet is woven face to face with a 'W' weave that keeps the pile in the fabric and resists your cat's attempts to draw it out with their claws.

Canvas: Canvas upholstery is great for resisting scratches and tears. Better yet, use washable canvas slipcovers for quick clean up whenever dirty.

Leather: Some swear by leather for clean up and hair removal, but leather is certainly not scratch resistant. If a scratched patina is not your style, we suggest forgoing this choice.

Best Bets: Synthetics

Crypton Super Fabric:

Originally used in healthcare and hospitality applications, Crypton is now available to the home decorating market. This 'super fiber' resists water, stains and has anti microbial properties that make it an idea choice for pet owners.

Microfiber:That new suede-

like fabric seen on modern sofas everywhere? That's microfiber. Microfiber is a synthetic that can endure spills and repel cat hair like no other. The unusually tight weave of microfiber means that it's a tougher fabric for your cat to get its claws into and even tougher to pull apart.

Fabrics to Avoid:

Tweed and chenille offer great comfort for humans and provide great cover for stains, but they are nearly impossible to rid of cat hair. Also, the nubby pile of the fibers tends to get caught in your cat's claws and lead to irreversible damage to the fabric.
Silk in all forms, from velvet to shantung, is not moisture friendly, stains easily and can be torn to shreds by the right set of paws. Avoid it at all
costs.

Still in a quandary about what fabric to choose? Ask your furniture store or manufacturer for fabric samples that you can test with your pet. You can choose the one that works best for your pet and home to keep everyone happy.
