Carleton Washburne
Monday Memo
April 26, 2021

Washburne Families,

It was a busy and eventful week at Washburne; we saw some snowflakes, saved some ducks (more on this below), and made a lot of progress in our preparation for a full day schedule beginning May 3rd. Students will begin to attend Kinetic Wellness and Related Studies classes in person next week for the first time all year. We are also preparing for students to eat lunch at school and I want to thank our parent volunteers for helping make this happen.  If you have not contacted us, and you are interested in volunteering for lunch, please email me at [email protected].

Some Key Features of the modified schedule are as follows:
  • The School Day will last from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
  • Students will continue to have all their core classes each day between 8:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m.
  • Lunch will occur from 12:45 p.m.-1:30 p.m.
  • In the afternoon, students will mix pods to attend Related Studies and Kinetic Wellness in person. Students will not change for KW, but they should bring running shoes each day so they can fully participate.
  • Office Hours will occur at school, supervised by teachers
We are looking forward to the warmer weather as we close out April. One sign that spring has arrived is the annual visit to the Washburne courtyard from some friendly ducks. Each year these visitors arrive, build a nest, and we all wait with nervous excitement for the little ducklings to hatch. Last Thursday was the big day, and Operation Duck Adventure was put into action. Click to watch HERE for 2 minutes of cuteness overload.

MAP Testing This Week
Students at Washburne will complete the spring MAP assessment this week on Monday, April 26th and Wednesday, April 28th.  We look forward to seeing the growth of our students over the course of the year.  MAP reports for all students will be sent home prior to the end of the year.

Washburne Community Cardio Day
This Tuesday, April 27th will be Washburne's first, "Remote KW Community Cardio Day!"  From 2:00-3:00pm, we are asking all Washburne students to get outside for 30 minutes of a cardio based activity: running, biking, power walking, roller skating, etc.

Students will use the 30 minute block that isn't their office hour time to get this workout in. They will then have either 1:30-2:00pm, or 2:30-3:00pm to complete their related studies lesson for the day. Many Washburne staff will be out and about participating as well; students are being challenged to see how many staff and fellow students they can cross paths with during this time. What a great way to celebrate our community and get some sunshine and exercise at the same time.

DISTRICT NEWS

Parent Focus Group Opportunity
As we plan ahead for the 2021-2022 school year, we anticipate and are planning for a more typical schedule. To inform our efforts, we plan to bring together various perspectives of parents, staff, and students to ensure a cohesive approach for our August plans. Parents interested in serving on a joint staff/parent focus group are invited to  fill out this form by Friday, April 30.  These virtual focus groups will be hosted in May.  This was an approach we used last spring which proved beneficial.

2021-2022 Online Registration for New and Returning Students is now Open
Registration information for next year was sent via regular mail and email on Monday, April 12th. Look for these materials in your mailbox and inbox. Once you receive this information, you may contact District Registrar, Carolin Huh, at 847-446-9400 or [email protected], if you have any registration questions, or did not receive notification.

Please register early! Parents are asked to complete registration at their earliest convenience to help inform interest and need for optional services and programs for the 2021-2022 school year, such as bus transportation and the Right at School after-school care program.

This year families will not be charged for school activity fees. The School Board voted at its meeting on March 23, 2021, to approve a one-year moratorium on collecting activity fees for the upcoming school year.

Opportunity to Help Support Patients & Families at Lurie Children's
Since 2019, our students have helped raise over $59,000 through an annual dance marathon to support Lurie Children's. This year, students can again get involved by participating in Move for Kids, a virtual event from May 14th-16th where families commit to moving for the kids at Lurie Children's! To participate, you can register your family or your child at this link.

Once registered, you will receive your own personal fundraising page that you can share out leading up to the event. The weekend of the event, you choose how to participate: you can walk, run, cycle, swim-whatever gets you moving. Youth participants need to fundraise $50 to receive an event t-shirt that will be mailed directly. We hope you'll join us as we raise funds and awareness for Lurie Children's!

Adventures in Learning Animal Care Opportunity
ATTENTION all lovers of rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, reptiles, birds and other small animals!  Winnetka's Adventures in Learning/Animal Care Class is back this summer.  If your child's small animal is due for a brief break this summer, please email Anna at [email protected]. If it is time to pass your pet on to another loving family, we can also try to arrange adoptions.
