Connections
Rabbi Hannah’s Invitation to a Community Meeting
Dear Or Shalom Friends,

During Covid 19 we are more aware than ever of the importance of community.

I am grateful to serve our loving and resilient congregation and I look forward to all the ways we can connect with one another while remaining safe and maintaining our responsibility to the public good. Our staff and precious volunteers have brought forward a myriad of virtual programs during these extraordinary months so that members and newcomers have been able to pray and meditate together, study and converse, write and sing.

As we look forward to the Yamim Noraim we are also looking toward some degree of re-entry, albeit with hiccups and switchbacks to accommodate the reality of our imperfect process in slowly and safely enlarging our social spheres. As an institution, we proceed with caution and, always, in consultation with our excellent Covid Advisory Group.
Most of our High Holiday offerings will be of a virtual nature, with two opportunities for in-person gathering. I’d like to take this opportunity to outline the offerings we are working toward, using our creativity to mark the New Year meaningfully.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to invite you, EACH AND EVERY ONE, to convene a community meeting on Sunday, August 9, 10:30-noon. During that meeting I will briefly review what I lay out in print, below. One of our Co-Chair will answer questions emailed to us at board@orshalom.ca . Then, Mark Winston will orient us to our facilitated dialogue entitled CONNECTIONS, which is the main focus of our meeting.

Please register for the community meeting and dialogue HERE .

I hope that our dialogue will elicit your thoughts and strategies for enhancing our connections and for welcoming newcomers to community during this prolonged period in which we are not gathering in the ways we are used to. Our small group conversations will explore the sorts of connections we yearn for and will invite your innovations for the sake of ongoing and ever blossoming community. Every idea that is generated will be shared back in a follow-up communication.
For the sake of our flourishing, please put this event in your calendar and plan to take part!

Or Shalom Updates
Welcome Sammy Fogel, our new Shabbat Sheli teacher!
Having grown up at Camp Miriam, and having done Saturday childminding at Or Shalom as a teenager (and ten years later as an adult!), Sammy's connection to the Vancouver Jewish community is longstanding. She was raised in North Vancouver, celebrated her Bat Mitzvah at the Peretz Centre for Secular Jewish Culture, and has held several roles working with youth at synagogues including Congregation Har-El in West Vancouver, as well as Temple Emanu-el-Beth Sholom in Westmount, Montreal. Sammy loves theatre, art, and sharing stories. She values justice, creativity, connection and self-expression. Sammy has a B.A. in Liberal Arts and Women's Studies from Concordia University, and currently works full-time as the Administrative Coordinator at the Downtown Eastside Women's Centre. Sammy is excited to be Or Shalom's new Shabbat Sheli teacher!
Beautiful Community,

You know this...Or Shalom is always looking for ways to connect us with one another. During Covid, this has only become more integral.

As such, The OrSh team is launching a holiday greeting project for you...and for all of us!

Announcing....🎺

The Good Yontif Video Project 2020!

The video that will be made of your contributions will be shown at the virtual Rosh Hashana services, so if you participate you'll be famous! 😃

Please submit ONE of these TWO possible formats:

1. A photo of you or your family. This can include you and any "chosen" family members, "fur" babies, plants, or anything/anyone else that provides a feeling of comfort and connection. Along with the photo please include a warm holiday greeting. Neither the photo nor the greeting need be traditional. We welcome creativity!

OR

2. A 10 second video of you/your family's greeting. This greeting can be sweet, funny, traditional...whatever best represents you/your family.

Please upload  HERE  by  Friday, August 14   before Shabbat or send it by email  HERE

We are so excited to see you/your family's lovely greeting! Thank you so much in advance for your contribution.

Questions? Don't hesitate to be in touch.
