AUG. 21-23: Galilee Fun Days
St. Catherine's has reserved this weekend in August 2020 at Camp Galilee, the Episcopal Diocese's retreat center on the shores of Lake Tahoe.  Come just for the day on Saturday, Aug. 22, or stay all weekend; the camp offers comfortable lodgings and excellent meals. It will be a chance to relax, rejuvenate, and connect with each other in a beautiful setting. More details to follow, but you can go ahead and mark your calendar.

SANCTUARY FLOWERS
You can provide flowers for one of our  Sunday  services  in the name of someone, such as to mark a birthday or anniversary, in memory of someone who's passed on, or to the  Glory to God. Look for the Flowers  sign-up sheet in the lobby of the church. Choose an open date, and put a  check for $45 into the collection plate any Sunday with "Flowers" in the memo line. Slips by flower sign-up sheet allow you to specify whom the flowers are being given in memory or celebration of, so that we can honor that person in our bulletin.  Thank you!
Automatic bill pay

Some St. Catherine's members have found it very convenient to use their bank's "bill pay" service to handle their pledge to the church.  You can instruct your bank to have a check of a certain amount generated on a certain date, which will then show up automatically each month at the church's P.O. box. If you're interested in setting this up to save yourself the step of writing checks for your pledge, please talk to your bank or financial institution.

Father Tom's Message

At a meeting of the Catherine's Corner Book Group*, each participant was asked to share, "Where do you find sanctuary?" Where can we set aside the things that distract us from, and focus more intently on, what God is doing in our lives and in the world?

I thought of some of my places of sanctuary -- walking, reading, making music.  A very occasional place of sanctuary for me --- and, granted, a most unusual one -- is walking the city blocks of Manhattan. Being an introvert according to the Myers Briggs inventory, I notice that nowhere else on earth do I feel so comfortably anonymous; nowhere else do I so blend in.

But there's another reason, too, and it's a common denominator in all my places of sanctuary. There's a flow, a pulse, a groove that I step into in Manhattan. Even the seeming cacophony of city sounds -- horns, sirens, jackhammers -- somehow become a part of that rhythm. 

We also experience rhythm in faith. One of the most universal ways of making time for prayer is to connect it with the rising and setting of the sun. We come together for weekly worship. We have a cycle of seasons and lections. The rhythm of liturgy can yield both comfortable familiarity and unimaginable surprise. 

In Lent, we are invited into a place of wilderness -- quite different from Manhattan, but still very much a place of rhythm. The wilderness is a holy place, a place where God is profoundly near. There, things are simpler. There, unnecessary accretions that distract us are lifted. There, we are reconnected with the majesty of God's creation, and with the majesty of God.

Eight years ago, while on sabbatical, I bicycled from Los Angeles to Boston. People sometimes ask, "Wasn't that hard?" The answer is that training for it did, like Lent, require a lot of discipline and self-denial. There were definite challenges along the way. I made a wrong turn on my first day and veered way off track. I had multiple flats. A few of the climbs were excruciating. 

But mostly what I remember was the simplicity of the experience. For seven weeks, all I had to do each day was to get from point A to point B. In vast expanses of nothingness, I heard the rhythm of my heartbeat, I felt the rhythm of each pedal stroke, I listened with openness for the still, small voice of God. 

Whenever I describe my cycling trip, someone inevitably says, "you must have felt utterly exhausted when it was over. Was that really a good sabbatical?" I always reply as sincerely as possible, "actually, I never felt more refreshed, full of energy and direction, and aware of God's nearness as I did then." Take that as a parable this Lenten season.

March is 'Senior Bundles' Month
Enrich the lives of nursing home residents

It is now time to collect items for the seniors at Life Care  Center . The items will be collected in the month of March and blessed the last Sunday of March, the 29th. 

A board will be up on the first Sunday of March, the 1st. Please take those cards with the items listed and then bring the item/s back the following Sunday, or no later than March 29th.

  • Greeting cards (such as get-well cards, birthday, sympathy, thank-you and blank note cards)

Galilee fundraiser highlights  local musicians March 19

You are invited to attend an upcoming fundraiser to support the Camp Galilee Campership Fund on Thursday, March 19th, from 6-9:00 pm at the Great Basin Brewing Co., 846 Victorian Ave, Sparks.  Local singer/songwriters Kate Cotter and Tyler Stafford will provide entertainment throughout the evening and food and drink sales will benefit Galilee.  Be sure to purchase your $10 entry tickets from Beth Osborne on Sunday, March 15.  
Help prepare our church for Easter

After the 11 a.m. service on March 29,  V estry members  Liz Skogerson and  Todd Kodet will welcome volunteers to help with  
Spring Cleaning !  We will be cleaning windows and doing some housekeeping to prepare for Easter.
Palm Crosses for Palm Sunday

Join me Tuesday, March 31 at 10 a.m. at St Catherine's to learn how to turn palm fronds into crosses for Palm Sunday.

This web link: How-to-Make-Palm-Crosses has instructions, and you can practice using ribbon to familiarize yourself. I also can give you printed instructions. I have plenty of ribbon, so let me know if you would like some. Please let me know if you are interested by speaking to  me at church or at  [email protected].

Palms will be provided at our Tuesday morning cross-making session on March 31. Bring a snack or lunch and your creative hands!
Easter Lilies

Anyone interested in purchasing Easter Lilies can do so by Sunday, March 29. The Easter Lilies will be picked up from the wholesale flower mart on April 6, so that they'll have time to open up and bloom for Easter. Please see the forms in the entryway at church. Cost is $14 each.

Baby Bundles

"Baby Bundles" is composed of and supported by members of St. Catherine's and Trinity Episcopal Churches. With items donated by both congregations, volunteers assemble "Bundles" of layette items for St. Mary's and Renown hospitals. They are then distributed by hospital staff to disadvantaged new parents who have little or nothing for their newborn.

Any help with the following items would be greatly appreciated:
CURRENT NEEDS
  • Hats for boys and in unisex colors (size 0-3 mos)
  • Sleepers for boys and girls (size 0-3 mos)
  • Receiving Blankets for boys and girls 
**Any clothing should be Size 0-3 Months**  This is the most useful size.   Monetary donations are welco me, too.  God Bless!
