AGC of Minnesota
Awards and Recognition Event
Safety Performance and Industry Leaders Honored
The Minnesota construction industry assembled in St. Paul last night to celebrate record breaking safety performance and honor two industry giants whose work stands as a testament to professionalism and a dedication to excellence. I encourage readers to explore the details and compelling stories behind all the award winners and honorees here.
Thank you to the evening's sponsors - Hays Companies, PetroChoice Lubrication Solutions, Polygon US Corp, and the Union Construction Workers' Compensation Program.
CHASE Sets the Standard:
The Construction Health and Safety Excellence (CHASE) program is an industry partnership with Minnesota OSHA providing recognition to contractors who implement effective safety and health programs and training. The program provides three levels of participation. Levels 1 and 2 are contractor-focused, while peak Level 3 is awarded on a site-specific basis.
The CHASE program now has 43 AGC of Minnesota participants. Together, the total case injury/illness rate reported on 2018 hours worked for these firms is just 1.97. This performance is astonishing considering the industry average injury/illness rate is 5.0. Think of it this way, CHASE participants are 60.6 percent safer than the average safety performance of the industry! Well done and congratulations CHASE participants for choosing to separate yourself from industry peers and lead the way to a safer industry for everyone.
Jeff Jensen Memorial Construction Safety Excellence Awards:
This distinguished award, named in honor of J.R. Jensen Construction Company's late owner, Jeff Jensen, was established in 2003. Jeff was a passionate advocate for safety and these awards honor his commitment to making jobsites safer for everyone. Winners are determined by applying several measures of safety performance across three distinct man hour thresholds. We salute this years' winners: J.R. Jensen Construction Company, Meyer Contracting, Inc., and Parsons Electric.
SRI and Lifetime Achievement Awards:
The Skill-Responsibility-Integrity (SRI) Award is given annually to an individual who has consistently demonstrated these core values throughout their career. The 2019 recipient is Stan Jorgenson, Jorgenson Construction, Inc. Stan is a respected and well-recognized industry professional whose passion, vision, integrity, and community involvement are hallmarks of his life's work. Congratulations Stan and thank you for being a long-standing and engaged AGC member.
H.T. "Tom" Becken was honored with the 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award. A third-generation owner of Cemstone Companies, Tom Becken joined the family business in 1957 and helped grow the firm into one of the largest independently owned ready-mix companies in the Midwest. Tom has spent his career dedicated to the betterment of the industry with a focus on products, processes and people. Congratulations Tom, and to the entire Cemstone family, on receiving this special honor. You have given so much to help make Minnesota a great place live and do business! AGC of Minnesota and our members salute you and honor your place among the legends of the Minnesota construction industry.

Construction Industry Assessment Survey
What challenges is your firm facing? How do you see things changing over the next year? As we do each year, AGC is asking members to take a few minutes to complete a short, confidential survey to tell us how you see the present and future of Minnesota's commercial construction industry. To help complete the picture, responses will also be gathered from our architecture and engineering partners. The survey will close on November 8. Only one response per company. Thank you in advance for your participation.
