Border Community Alliance's mission is dedicated to bridging the border and fostering community through education, collaboration and cultural exchange.
Dear readers,

As the monsoon rains visit us with thunderstorms and scattered showers, we at BCA are planning for the fall by launching our Fall 2020 Internship and welcoming two interns- Ash and Sophia- with great enthusiasm. Given the circumstances that Covid-19 has created and the cancelation of the Summer 2020 internship, we moved to create a fall internship that will be offered completely online. Although we won't be meeting the interns in person, regularly scheduled zoom meetings and check-ins will keep the interns engaged in BCA's activities and mission. Both Ash and Sophia are students at the University of Arizona with interests in non-profits and the community life that makes the Arizona-Sonora borderlands such a vibrant place to live. Ash is a local Nogalense who will take on the role as the Social Investment Intern as she will work closely with BCA staff and our partners associated with FESAC (Fundación del Empresariado Sonorense) to create social investment profiles for the BCA website. On the other hand, Sophia comes to us from Austin, Texas and will be joining us as the Development Intern who will assist us with searching for grants and fundraising activities. The internship will run from August 31 to December 4. We anticipate hosting a final presentation on zoom where our interns will be given the opportunity to reflect on and share their experiences so stay tuned for updates. I would also like to extend a special thanks to those who have supported the fall internship with their time, energy, and donations. We truly appreciate your investment and commitment to supporting our future leaders. As we transition into the fall season, we are also keeping our eyes and ears open to new educational opportunities that will keep our community and partners engaged and connected to one another and to the organization's mission. Thank you all who are making the effort to show up to our virtual gathering, classes, and forums. Be well and stay safe.

Sincerely,
Magda

Chiles en Nogada Workshop
with Chef Minerva Orduño Rincon

Join BCA for a video workshop of one of Mexico’s most recognized dishes, Chiles en Nogada. Consisting of roasted and stuffed poblano chiles, bathed in a white walnut sauce and topped with pomegranate seeds, the tricolor dish reflects the color of the Mexican flag, and is very much tied to the fiestas patrias, the patriotic days of celebration leading up to el Dia de Independencia, Mexican Independence day, on September 16th. Emerging from the cuisine of the mid 19th century, this classic dish has a little bit of everything when it comes to delighting the palate, sweet, savory, spicy, and just a bit of tart.

Let’s Speak Spanish Starts Tuesday, September 29!

BCA is pleased to announce that the popular Let’s Speak Spanish program will return this fall in a new online classroom setting.

Let’s Speak Spanish is a learning experience designed for adults who would like to interact more with Spanish speakers and learn more about the unique culture we all share here in the Borderlands.  The program is especially targeted toward beginning learners who have little experience with Spanish or have originally studied the language years ago. Through the use of small group breakout sessions, we are able to match learners with experienced facilitators to help everyone gain new speaking and listening skills.

This fall's version of Let's Speak Spanish includes many new class materials and exercises that should make the program even more enriching for participants. The fall program will run for seven weeks, with a 90-minute session scheduled each week. This first session in late September will serve as an orientation to the program to help everyone prepare for the following six weekly class sessions.  The following weekly class sessions will then start the first week of October and end the second week of November. All classes, including the initial orientation session will meet either on Tuesdays or Thursdays in accordance with the following schedule:

  • Tuesday class: Starts Tuesday, September 29, and runs through Tuesday, November 10, 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM Arizona Time*

  • Thursday class: Starts Thursday, October 1, and runs through Thursday, November 12, 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM Arizona Time*

In order to provide attention and feedback to all participants, each virtual class session will be limited to 24 attendees.  Prior to each class, participants will be emailed a link to join the meeting virtually via Zoom. All necessary materials for the class will be posted online for download prior to the start of the program.  The registration fee for the program will be $60 for BCA members and $80 for non-members, which will help defray the cost of material development as well as a small honorarium for facilitators.
If you would like to start learning a little Spanish or work on your previous skills, Let’s Speak Spanish may be the program for you. If you would like to learn more about the program prior to the registering, you can review all class materials posted on this website: www.tegnos.org And if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email the program coordinator, Jim Hoff, at jhoff@tegnos.org.
¡Saludos!
Thanks to your support, BCA’s virtual internship program is ready to start.

As we reported in last month’s newsletter, we were sad to cancel this summer’s internship program which has attracted students from all over the US and even overseas. Fortunately, we were able to conceive of a “virtual internship” with students logging in on line to do research and write articles for our ongoing development. Two positions were advertised through social media, and we were stunned when 30 students applied! Finalists have selected and the internship begins August 31. Magda Mankel, Education and Research Specialist, will work directly with the students, as will Alex La Pierre, Jerry Haas and Alma Cota de Yanez. Thank you for your financial support that has made it possible to offer this program. Some additional financial support is welcome as we consider offering this program again for the spring semester.
