What We've Been Up To...
Gathering of Native Americans (GONA)
ITRC staff recorded a welcome video for participants at the virtual Gathering of Native Americans (GONA) Conference this year. The Gathering of Native Americans (GONA) is an almost four-decade-old proven model to assist communities to heal from the lasting impacts of colonization. Historical and inter-generational trauma is at the root of hopelessness and healing is the answer to trauma. The GONA follows four developmental phases and values of Belonging, Mastery, Interdependence and Generosity.

Matlahuayl
(Mot koo la hoo ee)
The ITRC is proud to announce a collaborative project with Kumeyaay Community College and Birch Aquarium at Scripps. The Matlahuayl Project will focus on Kumeyaay language and culture sharing, through a mission of education at Birch Aquarium at Scripps. Stay tuned for more updates and program announcements!
Competitive Edge Presentation
ITRC Coordinator, Corrine and Graduate Community Intern, Juan spoke with incoming graduate students participating in the Competitive Edge Summer Scholars program.

Each student is the recipient of a Graduate Diversity Fellowship: Tribal Membership Initiative, UC HBCU, or SEED. The Competitive Edge Program provides opportunities to connect students to resources on campus to aid them with their transition into their first year of graduate school here at UC San Diego.

What's your favorite thing about San Diego?
My favorite thing about San Diego is probably the La Jolla Shores Beach! I looooved surfing there!

What do you miss about home?
The main thing I missed about home was my family of course and also the unlimited boba supply on every block of Chino Hills!

What advice do you have for incoming students?
My advice for incoming Freshman would be to make the most of the resources that you have! UCSD has an unlimited amount of communities and resources that are just waiting to be used! Your experience is completely what YOU make of it! If you want friends then talk to the people around or join a student org! If you want a place to study at you can use the libraries at UCSD. If you need academic help there are sooo many free tutoring services available! But you definitely need to go a little out of your comfort zone to make your experience the best it can be!
