FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE
It may be hard to believe, but we are knee-deep in planning for next school year.

We don’t have any super top-secret intel that can guide our planning in terms of Covid protocols, so we are not sure if we are planning for hybrid learning or full-time onsite learning.

We are not certain if there will be class size limits related to populations of students within a class period. We don’t know if we will still be needing to maintain six-feet of distance in our cafeterias.

And masks? Don’t get me started.

But there ARE some things that we know well and full.

Take, for example, our incoming ninth graders.

We know that we will be welcoming a freshmen class next year that spent six years doing elementary school. They know how that works.

They spent six months in middle school doing six-period days, so didn’t exactly have that whole paradigm mastered when we broke up and moved to remote learning.

They returned to middle school last month on the hybrid plan and are starting to get the hang of that elegantly crafted, albeit wonky model.

And in September, they are coming to high school.

We know that they have been Covid-ed hard.

Socially and emotionally, they will have experienced levels of loss and instability that none of us as adults have been able to fully mentor them through because not one of us lived through anything like it when we were adolescents.

Academically, they will have gaps and gulfs that we will need to fill in because, as much as we are focused on the wellness of the whole child throughout all of Covid, we cannot lose sight of our primary directive: education and academic achievement.

And they are now high schoolers, but expecting them to be fully operational as high schoolers is a pipe dream, for sure.

All of our Tigers will have very unusual and unique needs next year.

And there are critical moves our system needs to make in order to respond to global, national, and regional calls for elimination of opportunity gaps, increased awareness of racial and social inequities, and elimination of disparities in the experiences students have with student services, instruction, and curriculums.

So we are planning for us. How will “we” – teachers, administrators, classified staff and district leaders – respond to these needs in ways that are effective and sustainable.

Please stay tuned for next week’s NYCU to learn more about the specific ways we plan to respond to each of the challenges outlined above.

SENIOR UPDATES
Preparing for Graduation: Attention Seniors! Graduation is coming up soon! All graduating Seniors are invited to participate in the Graduation Ceremony. You will need a cap, gown & tassel. If you do not want to participate in the Graduation Ceremony please come to the Student Office and let us know.

We are excited that SPS has secured the Pavilion at Riverfront Park for our graduating the 2021 Graduating Class.

Lewis and Clark’s graduation will be June 13 at 12:00pm. Our Senior Tigers have been apart so long, it will be really thrilling to get them all under one “roof” for this big day!

At present, all venues are required by SRHD and DOH to observe facility limitations to one-quarter of the total capacity of the venue. The Pavilion’s capacity is 5K, so they are limited to a 1250 total population for any event. With nearly 400 seniors, we are only able to offer two tickets to each student at present.

We are currently working on the distribution plan for any extra tickets for families. Our intent is to put any unneeded tickets/wristbands indicated by a senior into a lottery system for an equitable distribution to those families requesting more than two tickets. Please stay tuned; we hope to have the logistics worked out within the next week or two. Note that the ceremony will be live-streamed for anyone in town or even across the country to watch in real time.

Congratulations, Seniors and Families! For more information, please contact Dr. Carole Baumgartner, 354-6891, or Caroleba@spokaneschools.org.

Tiger Fund Scholarship: The Lewis & Clark Tiger Fund Scholarship was started by the LC Class of 1966 in 2006 in order to recognize an LC senior who has overcome personal and/or life difficulties and has made a commitment to furthering his/her education after graduation from Lewis & Clark High School. We know that there are many students who have potential for college success but often get overlooked for scholarship assistance. We also know that character and desire to improve play a large part in future success in school and life. Two scholarships for $1,000 are available from the 2021 LC Tiger Fund Scholarship fund. You can download the application here. Here are criteria for the scholarship selection:

  1. Applicants must be a LC Senior graduating in 2021.
  2. Must have a verifiable financial need that would make it difficult to pursue a college or university education without monetary assistance.
  3. Must have had a personal life challenge/difficulty that they have overcome.
  4. Must have a cumulative grade point average between 2.5 and 3.49.
INFORMATION

End of the Year Laptop Check-In: At the end of the school year, we will be collecting all student laptops in order to update them for next year. We will provide more information soon about the laptop and textbook return process.

For now, if your SPS provided laptop has any damage, we are asking that you bring it in and we will replace it with a new one so that our tech department can get a head start on fixing computers for next year. The tech department will assess the damage and contact you if there are issues resulting in a fee. You can see Mrs. Rasmussen in the front hall office (in front of the auditorium) to swap out your laptop and she can give you more information on the process.
Boundary Changes Are Coming: With the addition of three new middle schools and the move to a 6th-8th grade middle school configuration, school attendance boundaries throughout the district will be adjusted starting in August 2022. We encourage you to learn about how the draft boundary changes may affect your family, and share feedback at any one of the following online community forums (Register to attend at spokaneschools.org/boundarychange): Final session: South Side Schools: Monday, April 26, 6:30-8:00pm. If you cannot attend a session, the recordings are available on the web site above.

The orientation will be virtual through Microsoft Teams on Wednesday, May 5 @ 6:00pm (meeting link). Please contact Stacey Donahue (staceyd@spokaneschools.org) if you have any questions about the LC Running Start orientation.

AP Testing Schedule: AP Exams will be administered May 18-28. This year due to COVID, College Board has added flexibility in the exam calendar and Spokane Public Schools has opted to have most exams taken at home on a computer. College Board does require some exams to be administered in-person due to special technology requirements and the difficulty of some exams (math and science) working in a digital format. The exams in blue will be taken at home on a computer and the exams in yellow will be proctored at LC (all rooms will follow district social distance and safety guidelines).

We will have more information soon on the details of testing, but for now, here are actions you can take to ensure that you are ready and signed up for the correct exam:

  • College Board Account: Because most tests are online, you will need to be able to easily access your College Board account. Go to: https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/ to make sure you can get in. If you do not remember your CB login/password, you will need to contact them directly as we do not have access to that information. Be sure to write down your username/password as you will need it for testing.

  • Payment: If you have an outstanding balance on your AP Exams, please pay ASAP through the Business Office or the online payment portal on www.lctigers.com - we will need all exams paid for before the testing window begins. Contact our Business Office if you need assistance in the process (354-6880).

  • Canceling and Exam: please go to your College Board account to verify which tests you are taking. If you need to cancel an exam, email Theresa Meyer ASAP to begin the process of canceling and processing a refund. There is NO fee for cancellation and you will receive a 100% refund if you have already paid.

  • AP Digital Exam App: If you have a district laptop, the AP Digital Exam app should automatically be on your desktop (if it hasn't downloaded, see Mrs. Meyer in the public office ASAP! If you will be taking the exam on your person laptop, go to: to download it now. Be sure to login to the app using your College Board login/password. The app has practice exams for you to prepare.

  • AP Review Sessions: The new series of AP review sessions is now available here and you can keep watching the AP Daily videos on AP Classroom to help review the course content and skills across all the units in your AP courses.
COLLEGE & CAREER
FAFSA: The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is now OPEN! It is highly recommended that all LC Seniors file the FAFSA. It is the first step in getting financial aid -- including grants, scholarships, work study, and loans - from any college, technical school, or career training program. Go to to www.fafsa.gov. In order to file the FAFSA, both the parent and student must first create FSA IDs. Learn more about FAFSA by reading 101: FAFSA. Do you need help with filing out your FAFSA? We have a great video resource for you from the Washington Student Achievement Council - FAFSA Line by Line - this video will point out common mistakes, tell you the information you will need to complete the FAFSA, and walk you through every single line in the application. You can also reach out to Mr. Norton for help on FAFSA, college apps, and scholarships!
