Bruce Museum currently has two exhibitions on view for the summer. iCreate 2019, on view through July 21, is Bruce Museum's 10th annual iCreate exhibition. These annual exhibits showcase the work of regional high school students selected by a jury. This year, there are 53 selected pieces, out of which seven pieces were awarded, and cash prizes were given to their artists. The first place work, Remember Me, was painted by Ridgefield High School student Julia Lin. iCreate was created to encourage young artists and help them connect with other artists in their age group as well as celebrate their skill. A People's Choice Award winner is still being decided and will be announced on Monday, July 14. Also on view at Bruce Museum is From Butterflies to Battleships: Selections from the Bruce Museum Photography Collection through September 1. This exhibition highlights the work of significant American photographers Margaret Bourke-White, Carl Mydans, Brett Weston and Patrick Nagatani, exploring the tremendous diversity in 20th century photography. Bourke-White and Weston's work focuses on and showcases the natural world, while Mydans and Nagatani's pieces depict historical events and their after-effects. Although artists and critics alike have long argued about the merit of photography as art, viewers are sure to find stunning works of art in From Butterflies to Battleships. Southern Vermont Arts Center is showing Everything is Still: Photographers Working in Motion Picture Film through August 11. Curated by Stephen Schaub, Everything is Still explores the longstanding tradition of photographers using motion picture film for their craft. From motion picture's inception, photographers bought film in bulk and spooled it down in darkrooms for their own still cameras. What began as a necessity eventually became a money-saving measure. Now, in the present, motion picture film is used to heighten the quality of still photos. Color film is exemplary of the pinnacle of color technology, while black-and-white film invokes a vintage aesthetic that can't be achieved with anything else. The stunning photographs in Everything is Still bring new life to an old, but still valuable, tradition.
