"The COVID pandemic has raised more awareness of how closely our health is interconnected with animals and the environment, the chief scientist of EU’s Food Safety Agency (EFSA) told EURACTIV….....from belonging to medical and veterinary science the concept is now including a rapidly growing range of other disciplines, including food safety, public health, health economics, and social science…... This is because we realise that we are not isolated in the world but all interconnected,” mentioning that deforestation happening in West Africa, for example, gave rise to the Ebola crisis." https://bit.ly/3GAANEZ

The COVID-19 pandemic has reminded us that many pathogens are zoonotic, jumping from one species to another. There’s growing support for a One Health strategy, which recognizes that human health, animal health and the health of the planet are inextricably linked — that protecting the planet is crucial to the health of all. https://bit.ly/31X1OmU

One Health is an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimize the health of people, animals and ecosystems. It recognizes the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the wider environment (including ecosystems) are closely linked and inter-dependent. The approach mobilizes multiple sectors, disciplines and commu-nities at varying levels of society to work together to foster well-being and tackle threats to health and ecosystems, while addressing the collective need for clean water, energy and air, safe and nutritious food, taking action on climate change, and contributing to sustainable development.

In 2022, CABI will launch a new set of transdisciplinary One Health resources. All of the CABI resources will foster transdisciplinary approaches that consider academic and non-academic, practical, local and indigenous knowledge in the research process and encompass exchange and cooperation among the scientific disciplines as well as between science and society. Established over a hundred years ago, CABI is an international, inter-governmental, not-for-profit organization that improves (people’s) lives worldwide by providing information and applying scientific expertise to solve problems in agriculture and the environment. It puts information, skills and tools into people's hands. CABI's 49 Member Countries guide and influence its work which is delivered by scientific staff based in its global network of centres.
Stressing the interconnections between humans, animals, plants, ecosystems and their shared environment, the CABI One Health Resources collection will consist of CABI One Health – an Open Access journal, One Health Cases – a curated collection of real-life examples of One Health in practice, and the One Health Knowledge Bank, a hub of relevant knowledge, information and data.
Article and case submissions will open in early 2022, with the first content to publish later in the year. Editor-in-Chief of CABI’s One Health resources, Professor Jakob Zinsstag, and Deputy Editor, Dr Lisa Crump – both of the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute – are now recruiting a global editorial board for this integrated collection of resources. Those interested in responding to the open call for editorial board members of the One Health resources are invited to contact CABIOneHealth@cabi.org for more information. https://tinyurl.com/y7v7bhth

Recommendations from the One Sustainable Health Forum session at the World Health Summit - Innovative One Health policy and governance for pandemic prevention
Hosted by the French Embassy of Germany in Berlin, as part of the World Health Summit 2021. The panel's conclusion recommendations are:
1. We need an innovative One Health policy and governance.
2. We have to do it along with the principle of solid collaboration in a trans-disciplinary and cross-sectional way, locally, nationally, internationally within networks of networks.
3. We need the development of prevention strategies with an effort on pandemic preparedness and of strategies of socio-economic management as a systemic approach.
4. We need a dedicated One Health governing body as a strong tool.
5. We have to look globally and invest in infrastructure and capacity building.
6. We have to go back to the roots, and we need to stop exploitive and destructive practices to promote nature-positive systems.
7. We should work on the development of strong cross-sectional institutions which conduct research and its translation into policy and practice. https://bit.ly/3rYTVZw

Beyond the call for more resources to support their research, scientists also hope their findings can be integrated into environmental policy making and clinical decision making.
When setting environmental regulatory standards, “we quite rightly looked at things like mortality, heart and lung diseases, and cancers,” said Duke’s Reuben. “I would say it's time to start adding brain health and mental health to that list.” “Mental health is such a fundamental component of physical health,” Manczak concurred. “We're missing a gigantic and important part of the puzzle if we're only concentrating on physical health outcomes.” https://tinyurl.com/5bn6bkrp

December 9, 2021 Webinar
Experts discussed some of the key gaps in the One Health landscape. Hosted by Sector Initiative One Health at GIZ, (the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit, the German Society for International Cooperation, often shortened to simply GIZ). The COVID-19 pandemic has propelled One Health into the spotlight of global health discussions around the world. Governments and international organizations are more strongly than ever endorsing and promoting a One Health approach to tackle and prevent pandemics. However, One Health is more than just pandemic prevention, preparedness and response. Diseases of zoonotic origin are only one of the many multidimensional challenges the world is currently facing. These challenges also include population growth, loss of biodiversity, and exacerbation of socio-economic inequalities. All of these have an impact on and are further negatively impacted by climate change. To adequately prevent and respond to such cross-sectoral problems, it is crucial that the fundamental interconnectedness of humans, animals and their shared environment be recognized by applying a One Health approach. 22nd EMBL Science and Society Conference. Hosted by the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), an intergovernmental organisation with more than 80 independent research groups covering the spectrum of molecular biology. By designing and implementing programmes, policies, legislation and multidisciplinary research, One Health seeks to deliver the best possible public health outcomes on a global scale. This conference examined the potential societal benefits of the multifaceted One Health methodology, analysed how successful it has been to-date, discussed whether One Health could be the key to future pandemic prevention, and ascertained what steps are needed to accelerate implementation. It explored whether the interpretation of One Health has been biased towards an anthropocentric view of “health,” and it also sought to answer the question: will something as far-reaching as the COVID-19 pandemic be the catalyst needed to finally make the aspirational goals of One Health a reality? https://bit.ly/3EsmG3w

Virtual Conference
EcoCiv Korea launched their “A Decade to Make a Difference” conference series on the urgent need for civilizational change. This two-day international conference focused on making a difference through religion and education. The first day focused on “Religions and Higher Education for Ecological Civilization,” while the second day focused on “Ecological Transition Education and Food.” EcoCiv Korea: It is our conviction, and that of our partners, that society needs to change at a level far deeper than most people realize. Solar panels, electric cars, and carbon taxes get nowhere close to addressing the underlying causes of our complex social-environmental challenges. The interconnection of our world’s biggest problems requires a paradigm shift—a transformation of our social and economic organization that is guided by a change in values and worldviews. As reports from the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change indicate, time is running short…we only have a decade to make a difference.

New Book!

Edited By Tanya Stephens
This is the first book dedicated to the role of the veterinarian in One Welfare, a concept that recognises the interconnections between animal welfare, human wellbeing, and the environment. It shows how veterinarians can and are contributing to improving animal and human welfare, offering practical advice as to how the profession can further engage in One Welfare in a range of settings.
One Health and One Welfare are parallel conversations moving in lockstep. See Chapters 1 and 12:
One Health and One Welfare - Joann M. Lindenmayer and Gretchen E. Kaufman
