How to Thrive with B2B
By Susie Albert, Penguin Random House
Llama Llama Loses a Tooth  – purchased by a local pediatric dentistry practice to hand out to its young patients;  Kindergarten, Here I Come  – bought by a local elementary school and sent to incoming students over the summer;  The War That Saved My Life  – bulk purchase by a literacy program to foster a love of reading. These are just a few examples of B2B success stories from independent bookstores across the country.

I am on a one-woman crusade to help my bookstore accounts in New England harness the power of B2B (business to business) sales. I’m always looking for ways to help stores find sales that will give them a bigger return whenever possible. B2B can make that happen! When books are sold to a third party who is giving them away for free, the order may be eligible for B2B. Books can often even be drop-shipped to the customer so stores don’t have to touch the books unless they choose to. As the holidays approach, ramping up on B2B messaging might bring extra holiday cheer ($$’s!) to your bottom line as now is the time when local businesses and organizations are finalizing their year-end gifts to employees and members.

Penguin Random House offers Skype sessions or conference calls with a B2B expert to brainstorm via a 20-30 minute presentation. ( Drop me a note at if you’re interested. ) Also, contact your reps from other publishers to get details about their programs. My fellow sales reps and I are eager to help build onto your bustling businesses!

Brainstorming B2B Possibilities
Make a list of businesses and institutions in your community that might want to give books away as gifts. Possibilities include:
  • Companies who gift books to their employees whether it be for training or holiday gifts
  • Religious institutions who gift books for education classes, for joining, to show support
  • Nonprofits gift books to advance literacy
  • Hospitals and doctors’ offices gift books to patients
  • Schools gift books to teachers and to students

Start reaching out and making connections and have fun!

Food for Thought
A round-up of pieces across publications.

Kacen Callender argues that publishers should hire more
diverse editors, since white editors often don’t relate
to stories about people of color.
