Dear Friend of Manna,
The conventional wisdom is that the DMV is empty in August. No doubt many folks are on vacations, and with the new school schedule, not many MCPS buses have hit the roads. I know my inbox has been just a little less full this month, which I am not complaining about.
Still there is a kind of emptiness that is worrisome during the summer months: a decline in food donations. While our Master Gardener friends and Farm to Food Bank colleagues certainly offer bountiful produce, shelf-stable items (like canned items, whole grains and pasta, and baby formula) don't show up in the warehouse as much. That's in part because people
are on vacation and not hosting as many food drives.
 Luckily our friends at 13 Giant Food stores and 137 volunteers stepped up for a special food drive on August 12th. At one location I ran into a warehouse volunteer receiving a donation from a member of our referral office team, not to mention a young girl earning SSL hours under the supervision of her dad.
The community turned out for Manna and we are so grateful!
Restocking our shelves gives us an important boost this time of year. Just as teachers, parents, and students are gearing up for classes, we are getting ready to restart the Smart Sacks program. Every Friday at 59 schools, our community partners deliver bags of healthy food for students to eat over the weekend so they can return to school on Monday ready to learn.
Thanks to supporters like you - food drive donors and volunteers, and Smart Sacks partners - Manna is ending the summer season strong and ready for the busy fall ahead. Our team has also rested a bit and we are ready to help make Montgomery County Hunger Free, with your continued help!

| Summer Food Drive A Sucess |
Many thanks to our 137 volunteers who participated in our summer food drive on Sunday, August 12 at thirteen area Giant Food stores. The hard work of volunteers and Giant Food employees made all the difference. Manna received 11,120 pounds of food, with six stores collecting more than 1000 pounds in food:
Bethesda Row, Flower Hill, Goshen Crossing, Kingsview Village, Kentlands, and Potomac Promenade. We also want to give special thanks to Cabin John Giant for hosting an employee-led food drive and collecting over 300 pounds of food.
Summer is not over yet and it is still a critical time for neighbors in need. Together we can fight hunger and feed hope across Montgomery County.

| Community Food Rescue Cooks! |

Over 147,000 tons of food is wasted each year in Montgomery County. Manna's Community Food Rescue (CFR) program combats food waste through a network of businesses, volunteers, and hunger relief organizations. CFR recovers, processes, and delivers food to local agencies serving people in need. Now that the new community kitchen at Silver Spring United Methodist Church is open, CFR is hosting regular cooking sessions to prepare meals from recovered food.

Food Distribution
Volunteers help, Mon-Fri from 9am-3pm, pack and sort food, bag produce and meat, assist clients to their car, and take in food donations.

Client Services Representative
Help log referrals by phone, fax, and email in to our database. Volunteers must be able to commit to a minimum of 6 months.
English/Spanish bi-lingual skills are required.
Shifts Currently Available: Day or Evening Floater (shift varies based on need)
Second Saturday of the Month, 10am-2pm (monthly commitment)
