Starting today, The Big Tent: HCA Members Show will be on view at Hopkinton Center for the Arts through January 9, 2020. The Big Tent displays the work of 30 Hopkinton Center for the Arts artists from 13 communities, featuring art of all mediums and styles. "I've said it before, and say it again: the range of marvelous work being presented to us keeps expanding," said the center's director, Kris Waldman. "This show is full of surprises." The Big Tent is a showcase of what matters to each artist. As different as every featured artwork is, they're united by the meaning they hold for each of their creators. Chelsea Bradway's photograph Angels Among Us, for example, shows her whimsical and creative nature. Bradway uses photography to capture the human condition, natural beauty, and, in her words, "all things sparkly." Angels Among Us reveals all of these elements, which combine to symbolize Bradway's artistic philosophy. Every artwork in The Big Tent is similarly meaningful, offering the viewer a snapshot of each unique artist. She4She will be on view through January 2, 2020 at The Umbrella Arts Center. This installation of shadowboxes was inspired by Heading Home, a homeless-serving agency that serves both individuals and families, and the women whose lives they touched. Artists Pauline Curtiss and Rose Leitner used the contrasting dark and bright colors of the installation to reflect the struggles and triumphs experienced by the women at Heading Home. In addition, the women were asked to share words that gave them courage during their struggles, writing them on term paper. The words, in each woman's own handwriting, were then incorporated into She4She, adding power to the gentle words. The various contrasting and complimenting elements of She4She combine into a dual vision. Making the installation a group effort was a deliberate choice. "Our process of collaboration on this piece was reminiscent of the story that we are painting about," Curtiss and Leitner said. "We brought our own languages, our own ways of painting, and by embracing communication and flexibility, were able to come up with something larger than we would have found alone." Viewers are invited to see She4She and continue the sharing of the beauty and power of the women of Heading Home. Providence Art Club is holding their Little Pictures 2019 Show & Sale through December 23. This annual exhibition is the oldest and largest exhibition of its kind in the United States, turning 115 this year and featuring over 600 artworks. The member artists have created paintings, drawings, photographs, collages, sculptures and ceramics, among other mediums featured in Little Pictures 2019. Despite the different mediums and artists featured, there is a common thread: Each piece is no larger than 16" x 16", and all pieces are available for purchase. Once something is bought from the exhibition, it's replaced with another work, resulting in a constantly-changing exhibition. Even after 115 years, this tradition remains a source of pride for the Providence Art Club member artists and surrounding community. Viewers are encouraged to partake in the tradition alongside them, and perhaps find a holiday gift for a loved one.
