Sherman College Featured by Ten at the Top
What happens when a “hands-on” education suddenly becomes impossible? Ten at the Top recently asked Sherman College this question as part of its ongoing series about Upstate businesses and the impact of COVID-19.
The mission of Ten at the Top is to foster trust and collaboration through partnerships and cooperation that impacts economic vitality and quality of life across Upstate South Carolina. Ten at the Top includes 10 counties in the Upstate region of South Carolina and encourages collaboration, coordination, and cooperation across communities and business sectors to make the area stronger together.

Up to 50 Percent of Classes to be Held in Person Fall Quarter
Sherman College is taking a major step toward a return to normal operations since moving to online learning in March. As the college has begun working through our four-stage reopening plan, virtual learning will phase out, and our hands-on doctor of chiropractic program will resume, with up to 50 percent of classes being held in person during the fall quarter.
This expansion of in-person classes for the fall quarter will help reacclimate students and employees to being on campus while also allowing the college to identify and address obstacles before our emergency distance education waiver (granted by accreditation agencies earlier this year) expires permanently on December 31. Academy of Chiropractic Philosophers Module IV Held
The Academy of Chiropractic Philosophers (ACP) met on campus and virtually August 8-9 to complete Module IV of the one-year program. Dr. Bill Decken was joined by Dr. Terry Vandervort, Dr. Dan Lyons and Dr. Thom Gelardi in sharing their philosophic thoughts and insight on subjects ranging from tone to the future of chiropractic.
Dr. Christopher Kent and Dr. Brian Dooley were honored for the teaching, wisdom and challenges they have given to the candidates in the Academy of Chiropractic Philosophers program. Dr Kent’s involvement has reached classes in Australia, Sweden, Chicago, Omaha and Spartanburg; Dr. Dooley has presented and provided online content in San Francisco, Spartanburg, Europe, and Chile. Dr. Gordon Brown Celebrates 99th Birthday, Visits Scallon
Retired chiropractor, Regent and honorary Sherman College Board member Dr. Gordon Brown recently paid a visit to Scallon Hall to see all the upgrades and changes. Dr. Brown recently celebrated his 99th birthday. Check out the photos.
Dr. Brown and the late Helen McPike Brown have supported and contributed generously to Sherman College in many ways over the years, including serving as Regents, making a generous estate commitment to the Endowment Trust, donating their home in Arizona to fund and construct the Brown House and Museum on the college’s campus, and setting up a $225,000 charitable gift annuity with Sherman College as the beneficiary.
“Although no one could question the Browns’ financial commitment to Sherman College, I believe their most valuable contributions have been their support, their guidance, and their loyalty,” said Sherman President Edwin Cordero, D.C., of the couple in 2018, when the college named them Regents of the Year.

College Community Mourns the Loss of Dr. Tony Duke
The Sherman College community mourns the loss of Dr. Tony Duke, who passed away in July. Dr. Duke was a dedicated member of Sherman’s faculty from 1980 until his retirement in 2017. He taught Neuroanatomy I and II, Neuro/Muscle Physiology, and Endocrinology, often referred to by students as “Duke University.”
“Tony was one of a kind,” said VP for Academic Affairs Dr. Joe Donofrio. “I knew him as my teacher, later as my colleague and eventually as my friend. It was an honor to get to know him.” Dr. Duke is remembered not only as a brilliant teacher, but also as someone who loved to travel and learn about other cultures and groups of people.
“Dr. Duke lived more than most people,” said Danielle Monroe, a 2018 graduate who says she is thankful to have called Dr. Duke a friend. “He was an incredible landscaper and gardener. He loved to make something beautiful out of nothing. He could talk for hours about just about anything. He taught students. He understood chiropractic and the nervous system. He wanted students to value what they did. But that’s such a small part of his legacy.”

Chiropractic Profession Mourns the Loss of Dr. Stavroula Andrinopoulos
The Sherman College community and the chiropractic profession are deeply saddened by the recent loss of Dr. Stavroula Andrinopoulos in July 2020.
Dr. Andrinopoulos graduated summa cum laude from Sherman College in 2006 and served in the Chiropractic Health Center as a case doctor from 2016-2019.
Dr. Andrinopoulos is remembered by many as a kind and compassionate colleague, doctor and friend. From 2007-2015, Dr. Andrinopoulos and her husband, Paul Soler (also a 2006 Sherman graduate), owned a practice in her hometown Kalamata, Greece. Her biggest joy in practice was working with children, and at one point she adjusted children and expectant mothers exclusively.
Dr. Andrinopoulos was a loving and kind person and will be missed by many. Alumni and friends shared their memories of Dr. Andrinopoulos on the college’s Facebook page.
“She was a wonderful, caring person and colleague,” posted Sherman College Radiology Department Chair and Professor of Clinical Sciences Dr. Laura Greene-Orndorff. “My thoughts and prayers are extended to Dr. Soler and family.”

Pet Week with Student Affairs
Earlier this month, Student Affairs hosted “Pet Week” during which fun competitions and activities, such as a Pet Show & Tell Zoom call, allowed students to interact remotely.
The week ended with announcing the winners of the Pet Photo competition where students submitted pictures of their pets and were able to vote on the best photo.
The competition featured 50 entries of all sorts of pets, ranging from iguanas and bunnies to cats and dogs. Congratulations to the first place winner, a pup named Minnie Becker Lee! Second place went to a sweet bunny named Coneja, and third place was awarded to Cheeto the kitten.

Clinic Accepting New Patients
A critical step on the path to good health and fighting dis-ease is the optimal performance of the nervous system. Sherman College is excited to announce that the Chiropractic Health Center began accepting new patients on August 10. The Health Center maintains careful procedures to provide the safest environment for patients, students and employees.

Last Call for Sherman CE Summit Registrations
In response to many cancelled live continuing education events, the Office of Continuing Education is bringing together speakers from around the globe for the Sherman CE Summit: A One-Day Virtual Event to be held on September 12, 2020.
Up to 10 hours of continuing education credit will be available for D.C.s in a live-streamed format, just like Lyceum 2020.
Featured speakers include Drs. Derrell Blackburn, Jamie Browning, Heidi Haavik, Tamara MacIntyre, and Matthew McCoy.

Regent Program Helps Advance Sherman College
The Regent Program provides for the advancement of Sherman College.
