Dr. Jeremy Lacocque is the new Interim Medical Director of the San Francisco Fire Department effective March 1.

Dr. Rob Rodriguez was awarded the UnidosUS Excellence in Leadership Award at their annual Hispanicize event on March 12.

Dr. Carol Chen was appointed as co-branch lead for the Outbreak Management Group (OMG) at the SF Department of Public Health. Carol will be helping to oversee MD epidemiologists in that branch of COVID Command and leading it through transitions as the pandemic changes.

Dr. Raj Daftary will continue to serve as one of the MD epidemiologists for the OMG Schools team. His team reviews all positive cases in schools, daycares, after school programs, and summer camps and provides guidance on closures and reopening, quarantine/isolation, and cohorting, thereby ensuring that schools are safe for children to return.

Dr. Aaron Kornblith was awarded Tweetorial recognition as the Twitter Poster with the most retweets from the first annual UCSF Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies (IHPS) Health Services Research (HSR) Symposium with the abstract he co-authored entitled, "Deep learning classification of bedside ultrasound for children with blunt torso trauma," bringing social media attention to the research.

Dr. Vidya Eswaran (Research NCSP fellow), who was presenting author on the abstract, "Frequent utilization of the emergency department and incarceration: understanding the association" which was co-authored with Drs. Ralph Wang, Maria Raven, Hemal Kanzaria (pictured below in Grants and Funding), and research associate Caroline Cawley, was awarded Tweetorial recognition as the Twitter Poster with the most likes from the first annual UCSF IHPS HSR Symposium

Dr. Israel Green-Hopkins helped create the new Becoming Zero Harm Heroes training course, which is part of the Benioff Children's Hospitals' Quality and Safety Training Program.

Dr. Kenshata Watkins (Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellow) was accepted into the Emergecny Medical Services for Children (EMSC) Fellows program within the Advocacy domain, a competitive national fellowship which is part of the EMSC Innovation and Improvement Center.

Drs. Toff Peabody and Malini Singh were awarded a UCSF Risk Management Loss Prevention Grant by the UC Professional Medical and Hospital Liability Program (PMHLP).

Dr. Nick Glomb received a $60K grant from the CARESTAR Foundation to support a critical pediatric behavioral health disparity study.

Dr. Renee Hsia was awarded the Pilot Project Award by National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) Center for Aging and Health Research (funded by the National Institutes of Health [NIH] National Institute on Aging [NIA]) in the amount of $50K for "Access Disparities in the Adoption of Stroke Treatment Technology" on which Dr. Hsia is Co-Project Lead.

Dr. Anita Vashi (pictured above in Achievements) was awarded a grant by the Veterans Affairs (VA) Health Services Research & Development (HSR&D) Office of Veterans Access to Care (OVAC) for her project "Pandemic's Effects on Non-COVID Health Outcomes" on which she is Principal Investigator.

Dr. Amelia Breyre (EMS and Disaster Medicine fellow) was awarded a private foundation grant from CARESTAR to pursue a research project titled, "Empowering Paramedics with Communication Tools for Patients with a Life-Limiting-Illness and Their Families in Alameda County."

OTHER FUNDING

After a highly-competitive search, Chancellor Sam Hawgood and Dean Talmadge King have appointed Dr. Hemal Kanzaria to the Terry A. Patinkin, MD, Endowed Professorship. Dr. Patinkin committed most of his career to caring for underserved populations, which is what inspired the focus of the professorship. This is our department’s first gift of an Endowed Professorship and it will support Dr. Kanzaria to continue the important work of advancing care for the underserved.

Drs. Jackie Grupp-Phelan and Kevan McCarten-Gibbs received a $450K philanthropic donation from the DiMarco family to support the clinical and research enterprise at the Children’s Hospital Oakland ED. The bulk of the funds will provide salary support for an additional psychiatric social worker on the Behavioral Emergency Response Team (BERT) in the Oakland ED. This is a huge benefit for our pediatric behavioral health patients.

Drs. Judy Klein, Tomas Diaz, Rosny Daniel, Joe Graterol, Starr Knight (pictured above in UCSF PSA), Malini Singh (pictured above in Grants and Funding), Kavita Gandhi, Riham Alwan, Chris Colwell, Mayra Cruz (R3), JL Santamarina (R2) and other members of the UCSF COVID Vaccine Speakers Group have spoken with dozens of community-based organizations at 110 events in 11 different languages, attended by more than 40,000 individuals across the country about the COVID vaccines. Dr. Micki Gonzalez (R1) also co-presented with Dr. Diaz.

Dr. Rodriguez was a featured speaker on February 11 at an event for Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hearts Foundation. He also gave Grand Rounds at UCSF Medicine on February 11 with a presentation entitled "The New Vaccines, Attitudes toward the Vaccine and the Biden COVID-19 Task Force."

On March 8, Dr. Rodriguez was an invited speaker on the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) webinar entitled, "This is our shot: how we empower patients to end the pandemic."

Dr. Renee Hsia (pictured above in Grants and Funding) was an invited panelist and gave a presentation entitled, “Racial Disparities in the Regionalization of Care for Patients with ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction” on February 5 at the National Bureau of Economics (virtual) Conference: "The Rise in Cardiovascular Disease Mortality,” supported by the National Institute of Aging, Center on the Demography and Economics of Aging.

Dr. Ellen Weber, along with Kirk Reade, Lori Kohler, Rikita Merai and Mivic Hirose organized a Covid Vaccine Call Center in the SF Department of Health to assist San Francisco’s most vulnerable population and those having difficulty making appointments for vaccine on-line. The call center was organized in less than 3 weeks, and over the course of one month, beginning in late February, has reached out to or received calls from nearly 5000 citizens of San Francisco.

Dr. John Brown (pictured above) participated in the World Health Organization Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean virtual meeting from Cairo, Egypt on March 1 & 2 as "Expert Consultation to Review the Proposed Framework for Pre-Hospital Care". He's looking forward to helping with the next steps as the document is finalized and pilot programs are initiated in the relevant countries (this region stretches from Tunisia through Pakistan).

In March, Dr. Stark was awarded the Lewis Blackman Patient Safety Award from the Patient Safety Movement, a global non-profit working toward zero preventable patient deaths by 2030, for his work related to E*Drive among other projects.

Drs. Stark, Peabody, Dhanoa, Grade and Malini Singh (faculty, pictured above in Grants and Funding) are in the semi-finals for the Urgent Matters EM Innovators of the Year for their work with E*Drive. They will present at CORD 2021 on April 13.

Effective March 8, Rachael Azadehnia will serve as our PEM Operations Analyst. After graduating from UC Santa Cruz, Rachael began her career at UC San Francisco in the Orthopedics Department. She received her Master’s degree from UCSF in Healthcare Administration and Interprofessional Leadership. As a healthcare administrator, she has experience with ambulatory clinic operations, streamlining workflow processes, and facilitating new department initiatives. Outside of work, her hobbies include traveling, spending time in the outdoors, and exploring the Bay Area.

Effective April 5, Anna Harris will be joining our DEM Staff team and will serve as our NIOSH Project Manager. Anna is a graduate of Boston University's interdisciplinary University Professors Program and recently completed a Master of Social Sciences in Psychology at the University of Chicago. She has worked in Social Services, providing case management and project management leadership, and has served in several clinical research assistant roles. Outside of work, she facilitates embodiment workshops and enjoys filming, choreographing, and art directing for a multimedia dance group, where she collaboratively fabricates bioelectric instruments to be worn for performance. Anna is a fan of experimental theater, eating tacos, gardening, wrapping gifts, and watching documentaries. One fun fact about Anna is that she enjoys observing earnestly sung karaoke.

Effective April 14, Lexy Mitchner will be joining our DEM Staff team and will serve as our NIOSH Study Clinical Research Coordinator. Lexy will be working with Drs. Maria Raven (pictured above in Achievements) and Ralph Wang (pictured above in Achievements) and will report to NIOSH Study Project Manager, Anna Harris. Lexy recently completed her Bachelor’s at Scripps College in psychology and anthropology. She has worked as a health educator for three years, with a focus on supporting mental health and substance use awareness. She is passionate about working with patients and healthcare professionals and is looking forward to gaining experience in research. In her free time, she practices dance and gymnastics and cuddles with her cat, Nala.
