Activities

Dr. Ellen Weber, along with Kirk Reade, Lori Kohler, Rikita Merai and Mivic Hirose organized a Covid Vaccine Call Center in the SF Department of Health to assist San Francisco’s most vulnerable population and those having difficulty making appointments for vaccine on-line. The call center was organized in less than 3 weeks, and over the course of one month, beginning in late February, has reached out to or received calls from nearly 5000 citizens of San Francisco.
Dr. John Brown was presented a surprise cake by the EMS agency to commemorate 30 years of EM certification. Pictured is Dave Ebarle, an EMS specialist presenting Dr. Brown with the cake. Thank you Dr. Brown and to all those in our department who have also honored us with 30+ years in Emergency Medicine: Drs. Alan Gelb (who began moonlighting in Emergency Medicine 43 years ago, started full-time at ZSFG 40 years ago, and was certified in EM 34 years ago), Ellen Weber (pictured above, who has 35 years working EM and 27 years of EM certification) and Steve Polevoi (who is also reaching his 30th anniversary of EM certification this year).
Dr. Rob Rodriguez (pictured above in Invited Presentations) served on an expert panel in late February for a report for the Independent Panel for Pandemic Preparedness & Response.
Dr. John Brown (pictured above) participated in the World Health Organization Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean virtual meeting from Cairo, Egypt on March 1 & 2 as "Expert Consultation to Review the Proposed Framework for Pre-Hospital Care". He's looking forward to helping with the next steps as the document is finalized and pilot programs are initiated in the relevant countries (this region stretches from Tunisia through Pakistan).
On February 25, faculty participated in one of multiple virtual activity events organized by DEM to commemorate the holidays. On this occasion, participants were guided by The Garden Home in customizing a glass orb air plant terrarium.
Resident Activities
Some updates on the E*Drive, developed by the Acute Care Innovation Center, led by Drs. Nick Stark (R3) and Toff Peabody (faculty, pictured above in Grants and Funding), with incoming leadership from Drs. Jay Dhanoa (R2), Alyssa Nip (R1) and Maddy Grade (R2).

  • In March, Dr. Stark was awarded the Lewis Blackman Patient Safety Award from the Patient Safety Movement, a global non-profit working toward zero preventable patient deaths by 2030, for his work related to E*Drive among other projects.
  • Drs. Stark, Peabody, Dhanoa, Grade and Malini Singh (faculty, pictured above in Grants and Funding) are in the semi-finals for the Urgent Matters EM Innovators of the Year for their work with E*Drive. They will present at CORD 2021 on April 13.
  • The E*Drive has a new feature called Social EMterventions, a discharge navigation tool which includes resources for Asian Violence Survivors, courtesy of Dr. Vincent Lee (R3). Check out a quick demo on Youtube starring Camille, one of our favorite DEM kiddos. As always, you can find E*Drive in the EPIC toolbar and online at EDrive.ucsf.edu.
  • Drs. Stark and Peabody will be presenting at the SAEM Consensus Conference 2021 on May 11: "Social EMterventions: Using Technology to Bring Care Coordination to Scale."
