Guide to Indigenous DC app showing historic sites in the area
A new tool will help visitors to Washington, D.C. discover the historic and contemporary landmarks of those who inhabited the city’s land before its development as the nation’s capital.

Elizabeth Rule, assistant director of the AT&T Center for Indigenous Politics and Policy (AT&T CIPP) at the GW College of Professional Studies, said D.C. is full of landmarks with historical, political and cultural connections to Native Americans. 

She designed and developed the app in partnership with the American Indian and Alaska Native Tourism Association and funding from the American Indian College Fund, Native Americans in Philanthropy and the Minneapolis Foundation.

A team of public workers who help parents searching for the right school, an emergency service worker and his dog who provide closure to families in the worst of circumstances and a boiler plant operator who kept building temperatures comfortable while saving the city money were among the public employees honored by The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation Awards for Distinguished D.C. Government Employees this summer. The program is managed by GW's Center for Excellence in Public Leadership (GW-CEPL).

Dr. Sandra Whitehead took the helm as the interim program director of the Sustainable Urban Planning Program (SUP) effective July 1, 2019. Now that Dr. Whitehead is settling into her new role, we wanted to give our readers a chance to get to know her a little better.

We interviewed her to find out more about her personal and professional background. Check out the story to get the behind-the-scenes view of Dr. Whitehead.

First GenderPro Cohort Launches with Summit
First GenderPro Summit at GW
International development workers will earn a first-of-its-kind certification in the gender field through GenderPro, a new capacity-building and credentialing program developed by GW in partnership with UNICEF with a grant funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
GW’s Global Women’s Institute (GWI) launched its inaugural GenderPro Summit in July with a weeklong culmination of a program designed to professionalize the gender field. GWI is leading GenderPro in partnership with the Elliott School of International Affairs and the College of Professional Studies.

Homeland Security Online Master's Program Ranked #1

The College of Professional Studies' online master’s degree program in Homeland Security has been ranked as one of BestColleges.com’s Best Online Master’s in Homeland Security programs for 2019. In fact, they have ranked GW’s online program #1, out of 25 online programs included on their website.

CPS Welcomes New Career Services Director Nicole Mintz

Nicole Mintz, the newly hired director of career services for the GW College of Professional Studies (CPS), brings a wealth of experience to the job. She joined the team in August following a seven-year stint as advisor in the GW Career Services Center.

Behind the Scenes Tour of High-Tech Museum Brings Classwork to Life
IIST students during career services fieldtrip to Glenstone
CPS’s Career Services Department organized a unique behind-the-scenes tour of Glenstone art museum for 18 of our Integrated Information Science & Technology (IIST) program bachelor’s degree completion students.

Students had a chance to learn about the extensive IT infrastructure installations used throughout the facility from their IT manager, designed to enhance the museum experience, including the IT infrastructure design and challenges.

Sustainable Urban Planning Leader Recognized for Contributions to GW

Dr. John I. Carruthers, the founding director of the Sustainable Urban Planning program, left GW this summer to join Cornell University’s Department of City and Regional Planning as an associate professor.

His contributions to GW include eight years as leader and program director extraordinaire. He excelled in growing and shaping the SUP program to the point where it could pass the rigorous test of accreditation by the Planning Accreditation Board (PAB).

Native American Students Intern on Capitol Hill

Nolan Arkansas and Jordan Oglesby participated in GW's Native American Political Leadership Program (NAPLP) and interned with the first Native American women elected to Congress this summer.

For the past 14 years, NAPLP has placed over 200 Native American, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian students from across the country in internships on Capitol Hill, in policy and tribal organizations and nonprofit sites across D.C. The program is run by the GW’s AT&T Center for Indigenous Politics and Policy (AT&T CIPP) within the College of Professional Studies.

Luke Lorenz, a master’s degree candidate in political management in the Graduate School of Political Management, is combining his political management studies with running his nonprofit, Veterans Against Hate, which seeks to address prejudice and political polarization.

Before pursuing graduate studies at GW, Luke Lorenz enjoyed a career as an international policy analyst and also served in the United States Army.
