Saturday is Sunflower Day
sunflower-sm2.jpg
There's an old Maori proverb that says “Turn your face to the sun and the shadows fall behind you.” Leave your cares behind this Saturday and come celebrate sunflowers and the simple pleasures of Fall with us. Shop the market for sunflowers, grab a free sunflower tattoo at the INFO tent, and dress up your pooch for the Sunflower Pooch Parade. Also joining in the fun of Sunflower Day will be local performers Grins & Grins! Look for them towering above the Market, juggling their way around the circle – and even handing out balloons for the kids.Enjoy live music with Liliana Cunha, and some fun crafts for kids and a cookbook signing too!

FROM THE FIELD
Cabbage Throw Farm
Cucumbers for Pickling & Tomatoes for Drying
In honor of the Sunflower Day, Cabbage Throw Farm would like to thank their pollinators. Rows of flowers were planted through spring to keep the bees and butterflies happy while encouraging pollination of tomatoes and cucumbers. August is the time to preserve summer! Cabbage Throw has lots of cucumbers to pickle and tomatoes to sun-dry. They will also have their usual cooking and salad greens, herbs and flowers.

Oven “Sun”dried tomatoes
Preheat the oven to 225 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper

2 . Slice tomatoes in half. Cut out the little core at the top of the tomatoes where they connected to the stem.

3. Arrange cut side up on a baking sheet. Sprinkle very lightly with sea salt.

4. Bake for 2 1/2 hours. Press down on the tomatoes with a spatula (juices will come out)

5. Return to the oven and bake for at least 2 more hours, until tomatoes are dry

Optional: drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with Italian seasoning.

*** Sundries tomatoes can be stored in the refrigerator, frozen or in olive oil!***
Phillips Farms
Bartlett Pears and Raspberries
Bartlett Pears at Phillips Farms this week. These sweet juicy locally grown pears make a great snack or addition to lunchboxes. Have you tried their Asian Pears? They were a big hit last week and they will continue to have them this week, as well as Honeycrisp Apples, Gala Apples, Gingergold Apples and Zestar Apples. Peaches are winding down for the season with only a couple weeks remaining before they are gone. Phillips' fall-producing raspberries are amazing, you don’t want to miss these. Also available this weekend: Kirby cucumbers, garlic, garlic scapes, fresh basil, Sun Gold cherry tomatoes and hot peppers.
Scholl Orchards
Get your Peaches while you still Can!
Yellow freestone peaches are still fairly plentiful but the white ones are done for the year. Nectarines, plums and pluots are plump and plentiful.

More apple varieties are arriving every week so get the season's first Galas, Honeycrisp, MacIntosh and Zestars. Watermelon, cantaloupe, and canary melons continue to grace the stand at Scholl's along with juicy tomatoes and plenty of veggies.

And be sure to treat yourself to a bouquet of sunflowers (grown by Grim's Orchards & Family Farm)
