New director selected for USDFRC
Dr. Dennis Hancock has been selected as the Center Director of the
US Dairy Forage Research Center (USDFRC), Madison, WI. His appointment was effective January 19, 2020. Dr. Hancock received his B.S. in Agriculture from Berea College in 1996 and his M.S. in Plant and Soil Sciences from the University of Kentucky in 1999. After a stint as the Grant County, KY, Extension Agent, he received his Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky in 2006, while also working full-time as the Research and Extension Coordinator for the Precision Agriculture Team.
Dr. Hancock served as Professor in the Crop and Soil Sciences Department and the Forage Extension Specialist at the University of Georgia (UGA) since 2006. Dr. Hancock had responsibility for statewide extension and applied research in forage agronomy and forage-based livestock systems (dairy, beef, horse, small ruminants). Dr. Hancock led the Sustainable Grazing Systems program at UGA where he and his colleagues conducted comprehensive research to assess best management practices for pasture and grassland crop systems. He successfully led the replacement of an existing plant science farm with a new 660-acre farm, with nine new structures (including a variable rate irrigation system, equipment storage, specialized sample processing facilities, shop, pesticide storage, grain drying and storage facilities, farm manager's home, and headquarters) with a $14 million budget. The Iron Horse Farm is now used by UGA faculty, staff and students for over 175 research projects.
He received the two highest awards bestowed by the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences and University of Georgia for Extension/Public Service and Outreach, the D.W. Brooks Award for Excellence in Extension and the Walter B. Hill Award for Distinguished Achievement in Public Service and Outreach. He is the only Georgia extension specialist to receive the Georgia Association of County Agricultural Agents' Junior Specialist of the Year and the Senior Specialist of the Year Awards. He also received the American Forage and Grassland Council's Medallion Award, their highest recognition of service to the discipline.
Dr. Hancock is often contacted as part of applied research and technology development projects for advice or as a consultant because of his whole systems viewpoint and expertise within several subdisciplines and is frequently asked to serve as an advisor and consultant for management issues in and outside of Georgia. Evidence of the widespread recognition of his expertise is the fact that he is in demand as a speaker. During the period 2007-2018, he made presentations at 693 events in Georgia alone. He has also spoken at over 100 out-of-state events.
He has served on the stakeholder committee for the US Dairy Forage Research Center and as an advisor to Purdue University's strategic plan for their Ag Experiment Station's research and education centers.

USDA proposed school lunch changes get mixed reviews
Touted as a way to put local school and summer food service operators "back in the driver's seat of their programs" and offer school nutrition professions more flexibility to appeal to students' preference and reduce food waste, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced additional proposed rule changes to its school and summer meal programs.

Califia Farms secures $225m for plant-based beverages
Califia Farms, a leading plant-based food and beverage company, recently announced it has completed one of the largest private capital raisings within the natural foods sector, through a $225 million Series D financing led by the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA). Other investors in the financing include Singapore headquartered investment company Temasek, Canada based Claridge, Hong Kong based Green Monday Ventures, and a Latin America based family with significant interests in coffee and consumer products.

FDA commissioner urged to uphold dairy terms
Sens. Tammy Baldwin (D., Wis.) and Jim Risch (R., Ida.) are leading their colleagues in standing up for America's dairy farmers in a bipartisan letter to Dr. Stephen Hahn, the new commissioner of the U.S. Food & Drug Administration. Working on behalf of dairy farmers in Wisconsin, Idaho and across the country, Baldwin and Risch implored Hahn to work with Congress to combat the misuse of dairy terms on non-dairy products.

USDA consolidates lab testing regulations
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is making it easier for animal diagnostic laboratories to carry out vital livestock disease testing on behalf of the agency.

2020 ADSA Annual Meeting Call for Abstracts (Deadline 2/20/20)
The abstract submission site for the 2020 ADSA Annual Meeting is now open! Visit
https://www.adsa.org/Meetings/2020-Annual-Meeting/Abstracts to submit your abstract. Submission instructions, quality standards, answers to frequently asked questions, and student competition guidelines are available on the page. There is no abstract submission fee.
Again in 2020-Platform Sessions
. In a platform session, an invited speaker leads off a themed or topical oral session with a 30- or 45-minute talk, which is then followed by submitted abstract talks. This oral session type can result in higher levels of engagement of oral session submitters/presenters, while disseminating the most current research. Platform sessions provide a third oral session option, somewhere between a symposium and a general oral session. When submitting your abstract(s), be sure to look for platform sessions that may incorporate your research.
The deadline for abstract submission is February 20, 2020, at 11:59 pm (CST).
The
2020 ADSA Annual Meeting website will be updated frequently with the latest meeting information, so bookmark the site and visit often. Housing will open in November 2019, and meeting registration will be available in early February 2020.
The 2020 ADSA Annual Meeting scientific program will feature 1,200 oral and poster presentations from around the globe. Make sure yours is included, as 1,900 scientists from 50 countries meet in beautiful West Palm Beach, Florida. Benefit from symposia, workshops, and preconference events presented by the world's leading animal and dairy scientists. Topics include dairy food science, dairy production, animal health and well-being, animal and human nutrition, food safety, and production and management. - one director from the dairy foods division to serve for three years-2020 to 2023; and
- one director from the production division to serve for three years-2020 to 2023.

FASS-AFIA New Frontiers in Animal Nutrition Award
! The deadline to nominate colleagues for the FASS-AFIA New Frontiers in Animal Nutrition Award is approaching. The award is designed to stimulate, acknowledge, and reward pioneering and innovative research relevant to the nutrition of animals that benefits humankind and the nutritional value of foods from animals. The award will be presented at the meeting of choice of the award winner (during the annual meeting of the American Dairy Science Association, American Society of Animal Science, or Poultry Science Association) in the summer of 2020.
Deadline: All nominations must be submitted on the website no later than April 1, 2020, 11:59 p.m. CDT.
Instructions: Guidelines for the FASS-AFIA New Frontiers in Animal Nutrition Award are posted
here. Nominators are encouraged to review the instructions carefully and to follow these guidelines strictly to avoid rejection of the nomination.
Eligibility:
- Nominee must have made an outstanding and innovative contribution to nutrition research concerning animals that benefits humankind or the nutritional value of food from animals.
- Nominee must have published results of original research.
- Nominee must have been a member of ADSA, ASAS, or PSA for at least five consecutive years and currently be a member of such society and in good standing.
- No individual shall receive the award more than once. Preferably, the award shall be presented to one individual but may be bestowed to coworkers if deemed advisable by the American Feed Industry Association award committee.
