Message from the Senior Pastor
Dear Friends,
The Power of Community
This weekend, we will celebrate our community. Homecoming! Many of us have been in other places this summer, resting, boating, hiking, swimming, sightseeing, and connecting with family and friends. I hope you've enjoyed it!
But summer ends and now it's time to return to work and get back to the people with whom we share everyday life.
Church is an important element in our lives in that it provides a grounding, a social and spiritual safety net, and an opportunity to go deeper into our thoughts and feelings.
On Sunday, we will worship together and then laugh and play and eat together over at Haley Field. Please come and be a part of it all!
I can't wait to see you.

Christian Education Sept 2019
HCC family and friends,
It is hard to believe that my journey towards ordination will be wrapped up on September 22nd of this month. As I said on the night when the church passed me through my ecclesiastical council - "We did it!" I know that I have worked very hard, but I really feel like Hingham Congregational Church has accomplished a grand task. Clergy simply cannot become clergy without a great community behind them. YOU are my great community. Thank you. This is one of those, words cannot really express the thanks kind of moments that we all experience at one time or another. So, here is my thank you, though it just doesn't do the trick!
The summer at Hingham Congregational has been truly wonderful and it is exciting to have another program year staring us square in the face. As the kids head back to school with all anxiety and worries (and excitement too!), candles are burning brightly for them. For all that they'll learn, the friends they will make, the goals they might score, and the fun that might had while they are learning. My prayer is that this year is one of considerable growth and joy.
As we all head into the program year, I pray we remember what little we actually need to make it from day to day and that we realize, more deeply, how love and care sustains us. Let's notice the leaves already beginning their change and consider the ways we, ourselves, are always shifting.
As the Homecoming Picnic is this Sunday, just after church at Haley Field I did want to remind everyone that we are seeking a Kan Jam set as well as a Nuke'em set. Let me know if you have either of these yard games or another that you would like to share with our beloved community. Also, another friendly reminder to wear or bring comfortable clothes to change into and to bring your own chair if you are able.
I did want to make sure the entire HCC community knew that I am currently serving as president of Hingham Hull Religious Leaders Association. This will likely mean about 5-7 hours of work per month so I just wanted to make sure our community was aware; what a great privilege this is! I will do my best in representing HCC, as always.
Confirmation is coming right up and we have a great group this year - it will be grand! Let us know if someone in your family is of age (8th grade) and we have not yet made contact with you. Orientation is Sept. 15th just after church.
At the end of September we will begin our three week reflection of Beautiful Boy by David Sheff. This book gives a clear picture of one father's experience of working to support and adolescent and young adult struggling with addiction. The father also works to support the entire family and find himself in a harrowing journey. Learn more about Sheff's book here:
http://www.davidsheff.com/beautifulboy
. There is also a movie if you simply do not have time to read some or all of the book. So many of us are touched by struggles of addiction and mental illness, even if we do not realize it. Knowing this, we educate ourselves and lean into God's call to neighbor love. You may come to one, two or all of the meetings; I hope to see you there; Sept 29th, 11:30 am - 12:45 pm. I'll make sure there are nibbles to keep our stomachs satisfied.
Peace of Christ,
Sara

FROM THE MODERATOR
"Behold how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell in unity!" Psalm 133
I always think of the final days of summer as the sweetest. Perhaps it is easier to appreciate them because we can count them. Fortunately, we can also find solace knowing there is an endless supply of the final days of summer.
The back to business of September weighs on all of us. Daily demands make it easy to slip away and lose focus, disconnect from church and God, and let life take over. We are blessed with a community that is always there for us. As we return from summer adventures big and small, we can always come home. Come home to HCC where all are welcome, and where there is an endless supply of love.

Dear Hingham Congregational Shepherds,
As you all know, it takes a village to raise kiddo/s! We are so looking forward to the upcoming church school year and, as you know, we'll need help.
While we have some excellent leads on teachers and are working diligently to hire, we might need extra support in the mean time. That being said, as you sign up to shepherd using this link:
https://signup.com/go/fHAHuST, please also let me know if you'd like to teach one Sunday. Curriculum is provided and I always find it to be rewarding. The children and youth have great thoughts and ideas about our faith. (Well of course they do!)
Please let me know if you have any questions; I look forward to seeing you soon!
Best,
Sara

Consignment Center Gears up for New Season
Work on the Consignment Center continued throughout the summer as leadership planned for site improvements, business revisions, and supply inventories. We are eager to begin another season on September 10!
(New this year Reusable GCC Totes)
The volunteer staff will be gathering on
Thursday, September 5, for re-orientation, updated training, and shop preparation. The meeting will begin at
10am for business purposes, pause for a light luncheon, and resume for cleaning and staging through the early afternoon.
Due to the business and community expansion of GCC in recent years, we are in need of additional volunteers for the coming year. We would love to welcome new faces and integrate new skills and interests, and can offer morning, afternoon, and/or evening hours
to accommodate a variety of work and family schedules. For three hours weekly (one regular shift), you can bring significant assistance as we strive to maintain
an important community ministry.
If you are interested, or have further questions about what your role could be, contact Marcia Sinclair (
[email protected]), Gail shields (
[email protected]), or Sarah England (
[email protected]). We invite you to come as our guests on September 5 and get a true sense of our work and our workers.
Look for the yellow flag on Tuesday, September 10, when regular business hours resume on Tuesdays (10am-7pm), Wednesdays (10am-1pm), Thursdays (10am-6pm) and Saturdays (10am-1pm). We are accepting fall merchandise on a consignment basis or as donations.

JOIN THE CHOIR!!
Senior Choir
season runs from the first Thursday after Labor Day until around the 20th of June. We rehearse on Thursday evenings at the church and sing almost every Sunday. High School students and adults are welcome. We sing a wide variety of music from different historical periods and styles. You don't have to be a really good singer or read music well to sing with us - that's what rehearsals are for, as choir members help one another find their way. We are informal and friendly, we laugh a lot, we care about each other, and we have a great time singing together. Why not pick a Thursday night and come give us a try? It would be great to have you with us.
Senior Choir Resumes, Thursday, September 5, 7:30-9:15PM rehearsal at church; Sunday, September 8, 9AM Warm-up for the 10AM Service. Contact David Giessow for more information: 617-686-2581 cell; [email protected]
Not able to commit every week?
The Folk Choir
members enjoy practicing and singing in Sunday morning worship about once a month. Terri Fortin is our organizer; musical leadership is offered by Steve Waynen, Ed Bartholomew and other members. We enjoy singing a variety of Folk-Rock music, coordinating our music with other elements of worship. We have a great time singing and raising our voices in worship to God! Contact Terri Fortin (781) 740-1485 [email protected] and ask to be added to the folk
choir email list so you will know when we sing next.

JR. CHOIR RESUMES SEPT. 15
Would you like to sing with the Jr. Choir this year? Our first rehearsal will be after church on September 15, starting at 11:20 and ending about noon time. If you are 4 years old to 6th grade and like to sing, we would love to have you join Mr. B. and Mrs. England. Rehearsals are almost every Sunday morning after church. We know you cannot make every Sunday, so we also send out sound files so you can learn the songs at home. It's a wonderful way to express yourself through song shared with our church family in worship about once a month. If you sang last year, please come back this fall. If you are new, we will warmly welcome you. We are friendly group. Any questions, contact Mr. B. Mr.s England - or the church office.

In Support of the Green Team and Our Planet
Dear HCC Community:
I'm reaching out to you regarding a topic that's becoming increasingly dear to me with each passing day: the health of our planet. As I sit at my keyboard, thinking about the thousands of folks in the Bahamas who are right this minute being terrified by an unprecedented weather event, a massive hurricane being fueled by record-setting 85-90 degree water temperatures, I can only wonder what's next. Recent memory raises other unprecedented weather events, from Superstorm Sandy to the hurricanes of the past few years that have destroyed large portions of the Caribbean, Puerto Rico and the Florida panhandle. Moving beyond the weather, I think of some of the other stories that I've seen recently that for me evoke tremendous sadness at the environment we've created; like the massive "whirlpools" of plastic trash that are spinning in the oceans, or the images of smothering smog and gas masks in Beijing.
In the immortal words of Howard Beale from the movie Network, "I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore!" At HCC, that means I'm going to do everything I can to support our own Green Team and our collective efforts to advocate on behalf of a healthy planet. In particular, I would like to ask you to join me in supporting the Green Team and an exciting event that has been scheduled for HCC on October 20th. On that day, Jim Antal, former Massachusetts UCC conference minister and president, nationally known climate activist, and author of Climate Church, Climate World, will be preaching to our congregation and leading a discussion after worship that will explore the shared values we must embrace to build a clean, safe, healthy and viable future. Jim will help us address questions like
- How can the church support individuals, families, leaders and communities as they live into these values?
- How can the church provide the safety and support people need to make the transition to welcoming these values?
- How can we be part of a real movement, learning from and/or working with other communities of faith that may be further down this path?
- How can we respond with gratitude as God calls our generation to devote our skills, assets and time to make the changes science says we must and technology says we can?
With October 20th just around the corner, I would be very grateful if you would consider contributing to the cause, to help pay for Jim's appearance and for other programming the Green Team will be developing in the months to come. A number of folks have already stepped forward. I hope you will, too. Please leave your contribution in the offering plate or send it to the church office at Hingham Congregational Church, 366 Main Street, Hingham, MA, 02043. Just mark "Green Team/Jim Antal" on your check or envelope made out to Hingham Congregational Church.
It may be cliché, but it's very true: This is a cause we must embrace, for our children, and for their children. HCC can serve as a foundation for our action. Please take part in making that happen!
With best wishes,
Todd Anderson
